We are in the midst of great events. Sectitestedail Steet Wasnt: Gton, Tuesday night, Dec. 16. Texas Annexation passed the Hotise _by Enormous Majority—Another Field Day in the Senate— Speeches of Senators Niles, Crittenden, Webster, Sevier—Triumphant Passage of Gen. Cass’s Reso- lutions—Calrfornia—No War—Mr. Pakenham’s Trimming—Comfort for Horace. It has been a day of business and of excitement. The session is begun in earnest. The House of Representatives, by an enormous majority, brought Texas into the Union, and sent the resolutions to the Senate, where they were twice read, and proba- bly betore three o’clock to-morrow, Texas will be indeed part and parcel of this great republic. The Senate chamber was crowded at an early hour, by a complete circle of ladies, by foreign am- bassadors, and hosts of visitors, to hear the conclu- sion of the debate on Gen. Cass’s resolutions. Se- nator Niles led the way, (after the petitions had all been presented,) in support of the resolution f Michi, Senator, ‘and he made a opr tel sensible and patriotic speech. He is perfectly re- covered from his indisposition, and his friends will read his speech with satisfaction and pride. Mr, Crittenden, of Kentucky, took the floor, and made one of his best speeches. No man in the Senate is so perfect a master of “the tricks and mechanism” of debate. He levelled his first shot at the Michi- gan Senator, and it went whizzing like a shell. He gave an unfair interpretation of the General’s speech yesterday, which called the General to his feet for an explanation. This explanation knocked out the underpinning of the Kentuckian’s finely reared super- structure ; but he recovered himself, and took new round, equally false. Again Cass disarmed him, by denying the justice of his interpretations, an¢ once more Crittenden had to tack ; but he displayed uncommon dexterity in doing it, and when at last he got a position that gave him open sea-room, he set his batteries playing in fine style, and he divided the House so completely, that in less than ten mi- nutes it would have bee; ager up- on the polices of Senators, and even of visitors, without knowing who they were ; for every counte- nance was a “mirror of the soul of the wearer.” The tone of that ier of the speech which gave him an opportunity of speaking the sentiments of his party was lofty, patriotic and national. He resorted. to no cowardly tricks, as Archer and Mangum had done yesterday—he hoped two years notice, instead of one, would be given to Great Britain before we dissolved the joint occupation of Oregon, and “he had not been able to bring himself to believe that we should bad wer with oe Britain.” His manner is pointed, his command of lan; extraordinary, and when'he pleases, (and thisis often enough,) he steeps his words in gail. His speech did so1 i towards rallying the dismayed and routed forces of the whig party, which had been so completely non- (sg yesterday by their own leaders. But te was far from completing the business. Mr. Buchanan now entered the chamber, and a rush of others. Mr. Webster next rose, and the whigs seemed to be walle encul to have him fol- low the Kentuckian, and he is certainly the only man in the Senate who can. He made no effort.— His speech was carefully spoken S¥ary, line of it alances—he knew just was worth, and just what me and n safe to stake a wi words or measures. : Mr. Sevier, of Arkansas, leaped upon his feet when Mr. Webster sat down, and we had a re- gular saltpetre explosion. le dashed into the O:egon business like a western hunter ana the brush. He cracked a joke on Daniel, got a retty severe one inreturn. ‘The gentleman rom lassachusetts,” said he, “ tells us we must ‘keep “The gentleman is mistaken,”, replied Daniel. “Well that was my understanding,” said Arkansas. ‘‘Which the gentleman,” continued Daniel, “may attribute to his own dark under- standing.” wier did our foreign relations *‘ up as Fouché, the most racy of all your cor- [liked hs speech, and every- hody else seemed to do the same thing. It wasa regular western affair. Nobody but a man from the other side ot the Mississippi could ever have made It wasa bold, Soares —_— Ta mo chain shot—a mixture o! vy Poindexter, and something a good deal better than ever. He convulsed the Senate with la aes showed the Chamber that he “ knew John Bi to pieces,” hit a see at pee pigs, by! os way, tisfied everybody who was not convil efor, that if war did come, he would fight like evil. a Berrien, of Georgia, followed, and the gal- lery began to empty. How long he spoke, I don’t iknow, nor how completely he em the House— tor the best racers had run, and I left the scene. But Gen. Cass has come off conqueror- reso- lutions passed unanimously, in spite of Mr. Ar- cher’s “pigs.” , 1 well know, of no great importance in itself, but it shows the direction of teeling in ike a, and you may expect bold asures will soon follow. i, Bi am informed, on good authority, that Mr. Pak- enham is watching this movement with the deepest anxiety, and that the spirit and measures of Con- gress will color his negotiations. There is no doubt whatever, that he will accept the 49th degree if it is in offered, and ie t not * wil wet be ns for war, and we have ibee capa needed them: there will be noise and bluster, aad there will be fine sparring and coarse sparring, but if Mr. Buchannan renews the proposi- tion which England refused, she will not think it best to refuse it again, for there is a spirit in the present Congress and throughout the entire nation which she must not and dare not inflame. More anon ; and to-morrow a word about California. Tell your good friend Greeley not to waste any more ammunition on California or on Machiaveli— the former will be ours by purchase in a very short time, and the latter don’t sell himself at all.” Com- fort the’poor fellow by another pill. Cuba is crazy to come along too, and while he is comforting him- self with anti-~Texas«meetings in New ] ire, ‘Texas is in the Union, and that gelden island, with all its regalias and “long nines,” 1s preparing to add another ** lone star” to our glorious constellation. ‘Two nights ago, a bold robbery was committed at Brown’s hotel, the Indian Queen. Three rooms were entered and stripped of money and clothes.— Sturges, the defeated candidate for the clerkship of the Senate, was robbed of everything, even to his cravat. One gentleman lost $100, and another $180. The suspected captor started at 2 o' ‘clock the brown,’ respondents, says. be! rr F ; same night, in a carriage, to Bladensberg, to take the cars at 6. Every making to hush the hi E effort is matter up.
