Wasuineron Irem.--It is asserted that Mr. Polk will certainly change one of the most important ap- pointments that he has made. “Washington. (Correspondence of the New York Herald.) Wasunaton, Dec. 9, 1845. Just us I prophesied in yesterday’s letter, Asbury Dickins is elected Clerk of the Senate. The Ben- | ton power in that body is omnipotent, and tho ed- | ministration wiil have either to throw off the south- western influence that controls it, or an organized | party, in the democratic ranks in Congress, opposed to its leading measures, must be the result. Mr. Benton says that the next President shall be made from north of the Potomac ; and when he says £0, it isa ‘fixed fact” in his political jurisprudence. Jt must and will be so, or else the bursting of the Prince- ton great gun was nothing to what the bursting end blowing to,the four corners of creation, of the ele- ments of party would be, in the event of it not ocenrringr What is going on now is mere skirmiyhing. The heavy artillery on the White House, has yet to be brought to bear, and when that roars, it will shake the foundation upen which cligues and party manceu- vres have been eo long established, to the injury of the regular heirs apparent to the throne, and be a caution for the future, to all self-constituted claim- ants tor the highest office in the gift of the nation. The details of the election for officers ot the Sen- ate, which I give below, are sufficient to demon- starte mostfully, this view of the affair. Look at it, and it will convince the most skeptical Evection or Senate Orriceas. Every moment is big with important rerults, and every day will develope mure and more the plans of the opposition to the intrigues of the powe that be, to put its protege in nomination for the suc sion. Wasnincton, Dec. 8, 1815. Office seeking is a inmost miserable and un- profitable busines, at ihe best—and even when the applicant is successful, nine times inten it is his eventual ruin Society in Washington is much indebted to the President tor bringiwg on with him a quantity of young tellows trom Tennee-ee—a yaliant, intelligeat jot of boys they wre, too. Previous to leaving his Suite, Mr. Polk would say to them :—* John, Bill, Ned, or Tom, (48 the case might be) I will take you on with me to Washington, and give you a chance to see Romething of the world. When we vet th-re, I will give you un office worth $1000 or $1200 per annum. Behave yourself, and you can remain there as long as 1 do; but office holding, fora youngman, 1g too often the cause of his being ruined. T have resided at the Capitol several years, and have seen a great amount of talent buried in those public offi- ces; und I wish you, yy lad, to understand dis- tinctly, that (if it pleases Providence to spare my lite) the last act of my administration shall be, to cause to be turaed out of office every Tennessean that I take on with me, and send him home; tor if he haa talent, he can get an honest living any where, aod be of service to his State or the country—which he never can be while holding an office in Wash- ington.” ‘ne President had a nephew who came on to see his uncle inaugurated—he stopped, while here, at the Tennessee hotel, in F street, where I am stay- ing. He wanted an office. Says the President— ~ Teun very easily give you an office, but I will not. You are young, and stand very well at the Tennessee bar. You must go home —go to work in your profession—you have ability, and in a short time yon may get into the Legislature, and after- wards you may be elected to Congres I love you too weil to see you destroyed by remaining here.” Mr. Poik has not a particle of ambition. When he heard that he was nominated for the Presidency, he said to a triend, ** Well, 1am in a vein of nek: I shall beat Clay—it is my destiny.” Under no circumstances will he again be a candi- date for the Presidency. He is very anxious to per- form the duties ot his lofty position faithfully and conscientiously—and that it may redound to his own credit, and advance the prosperity and happi- ness of the nation. If he has one grain of ambition, itisto be loved and thought well of in Tennessee. He loves that State as one lovea his mother.
