CATEST INTELLIGENCE BY THE MAILS. Hieuty Imrorrant.—We leam from our private and contidential correspondent at Washington, who has the best means ot knowing, that a few days since Sir George Simpson, the Goveraor of the Hudson Bay Compiny, was interesting conversations with Mr. Pakenham, the British Minister, relative to the forthcoming mes- | sage of Mr. Polk, and the position of the American | government on the Oregon question. The result of the interviews between the two British functiona- ries, was that a visit was made by Mr. Pakenham to the Secretary of the Treasury, and other mem- bers of the American government. precise nature of the conversation that ensued be- tween the British Minister and the government, eur correspondent does not protess to know; but he learned that Sir George Simpson departed, and is | now in New York, highly elated with the belief that the position which Mr. Polk intends to assume on the Oregon question in his message, is highly favorable to the maintenance of peace between the two countries, and to an agreeable termination of this difficult question. Governor Simpson will pro- bably remain in New York up to the sailing of the next steamer from Boston, the agents of the com- pany being Messrs. Maitland, Kennedy & Co. ‘is the general belief among the British embassy here, that Mr. Polk will moderate his views on the Oregon question, and such probably will be the ru- mor in New York. Our correspondent, however, still declares that they will find they are mistaken as to the character of the message ; and that notwithstanding the cour- | teous manner ia which the members of the govern- | ment talked with Mr. Pakenham, that Mr. Polk will take the highest ground on the question, and no rank THEATRE, BENEFIT OF MR.
