LATEST INTELLIGENCE BY THE MAILS. ‘Washington. | (Correspondence of the New York Herald] Wasmineton, 20th Nov. 1345. * Do you play at whist, Emperor ?” inquired Ma- dame de Stael “No,” said Napoleon. ‘* What do you play at?” “At Kings,” was the reply. So is it with James K Polk. Iam fast coming to the conclusion that before Congress has been together | many bours, the Colonel will answer that very sig- | nt question, * Who is Mr. Polk ?” of the most sensible, and really one of the greatest men in the whig party, was heard to say not many days ago, * This Oregon question is becom- ing the greatest question of the civilized wor ld since | the battle of Waterloo. It will involve the ruin of the whig party, it is true; and this, of course, J don’t | like, but I can hardly keep myself out of the cur- | rent that [ perceive clearly is drifting on to the shores of the Pacific. Tn spite of my whig princi- | oles, and in spite of my own convictions, almost of | right and wrong, I feel like taking up the Oregon ery that is going up trom every Statein the Union. The tact is, we have reached, us Bennett sa) (d— the fellow, be is always more than half right, and then he passed one of those splendid eulogiums upon yourself that nobody can withhold, from Queen | Victoria up to Louis Philippe, and from him up to | Colone! Poik; but never mind such things—you are too used to them to be vain) yes, as Bennett | } says, (aye, he. isa. shrewd fellow)—we have | reached our National Rubicon—this time at least it isas he says. We are on the eve of an astounding revolution in Church and State. All the elements | of social and political feeling are awake. The | feeling that his slumbered in the bosoms of two ge- | nerations of toilers, and of speculators; that noble national feeling that rolled the car ot independence throngh battle and blood for seven years, 1s now | d it is coming forth in its strength.” { *san honest confession--and i doubt not | t speaks the feeling of nine out of ten of the Ameri- can people. The whig party would naturally have dissolved after their last defeat, since there is no | reat principle of moment to bind them together— put their complete annihilation must be the result of trying to breast themselves up against popular na- tional enthusiasm. ‘They will gain nothing by pa- | rading the interminable array of British fleets, and talking about standing armies—England has no cuuse for hostilities en the Oregon question, and , even if she had she will probably have enough to do to take care of herself. For four years the popu- larity of Sir Robert’s government, and even the sta- bility of the throne, have rested on the mercy ot good harvests, A few shiners, more or less, decided the question. Now we are anxiously looking for | the news by the next steamer. What it will be, no man who knows England need hesitate to fore- tell. If the potato crop proves as great a failure as the last advices seenned to apprehend, some mil- ons of angry, gleaming eyes will be turned on Eng- land from that land whose people’s bread is a root, men dug out of the ground. Repeal will rise as bread rises, and a spirit ot revolution will go through the tamished ranks of Irish population as the pesti- lence goes—as the tornado marches. I should not be surprised if the news by the next steamer should | tell us that in the prospect of a winter of sutlering | and of want, repeal had again started bolder, wild- er, more furious than ever. But we shall see. At Jeast, the Almighty seems to be so shaping the course of events in both hemispheres, as to give a new and unlooked for extersion of our empire and our liberty. Inthe old world the human race has | been the plaything of tyranny—all England has ore by her system of government, founded by | Villiam the Conqueror, and consolidated Haat successive ages, is, that when afew men, a privi- leged class, have the supreme power in their hands they can legislate the millions into the dust! As a question of philosophy, of humanity, of christian liberty, it might be worth asking how far the mission we have to fill may require us to arrest this vast engine of power and corruption even upon the millions of Europe, Africa and Asia, and the islands of the sea. Our brothers—our own free born Americans—have crossed the distant mountains, that cast their blue tops into the skies of Missouri; and gone down their western slopes, into that broad vale that is Javed by the waves that come rolling in from China. And theze brothers ask our protection. The Presi- dent has told them they shall have it, and his word will not be broken, unless the democratic party are recreant to all their principles, and desert their lea- der inthe hour of issue, of hope, of anxiety, and of triumph. | Mr. Polk’s merit has had little to do in bringing on this wonderful crisis, which will involve the elash of nations—the shock of the old age and the itis the end of anera in human history—a climax in the progress of nations. Such events are under the control of super-human agencies—of pe human power. But how we are to bear our- selves in the midst of such grand and exciting is« sues, depends, in a great measure, upon the wisdom, the firmness, and the patriotism ot the President. His diplomacy for eight months has had muchto do in shaping events—and_the policy revealed by his message, will decide, in some measure, how we are to conduct ourselves. While Mr. Polk is not a man to seek an oceasion for pushing upon Great Britain, au unjust demand while her throne is rock- ing ‘in the heated, fever dreams of famine,” yet he will consider it fortunate tor his administra- Uon, that a crisis seems to be approaching in the af- fairs of the Britizh empire,¥which will cripple her power to divturb the peace of the world, because we do not yield to her unjust claims—because we do not allow her lion to trample along our borders Don’t neglect to send me the extra containing the foreign news the first steamer; you must also send me the regular Herald. For several days I have not gota sight of the paper till twelve o’clock The news boy says he cannot keep one for mi somebody gets it away from him. Just at the pre+ sent time, particularly, there is an intense anxiety to earn the next foreign news—and, of course, we shall et it through the Herald quicker than any other channel. It things look dark in Great Britain and Ireland, the news will color the message. The parts and parcels of this important document are a'l written ; but, as priaters say, it is not made up. Probably no President in the history of the coun- try, has ever had so glorious a crisis to deal with as James K Polk—the nation’s eye is fixed on his movements. No time for items of news. Macniavent. Nov. 21, 1845 New Foature inthe Custom House Difficulties—T)e Misses Tice Matrimonials—The Marke’, § ‘There is positively nothing stirri: resent in the news line—every thiog is dull, stale, 4 unprofitable. The custom hove affairs assume a new feature every day. The latest with regard to the Collecto: berth is, that it is co be tendered to the Hon. Dabney Carr, who is now here on leave of absence, as Minist to Constantinople. Mr. Carr, it is said, is willing to a cept, and Mr. Frisk is to be appointed in his plac Minister. Gen, Marriott is to receive the politician’s re- ward, by being removed from office without a why or wherefore. However, he is rich, and eccording to de- mocratic practice, has no right to feed trom the public crib, when there are so many hungry fellows too lazy to work, and too proud to pay their debts, who would dike to take his place. Mr. and Mrs. Ellicott, late Miss Fanny Ince, the vo- calist, ave still rusticating, or rather spending their houey moon at the Eutaw House. A reconciliation with the old folks is on the carpet, and will doubtless be suc- cessful. Miss Emma Ince, the danseuse, is filling an en- Sagement at the Holliday street Theatre, on completing which, she is, Ilearn, to enter the bonds of matrimony with @ young man of great wealth, who has neither pa nor ma to quarrel with her about running off with their son after the knot is tried. THe Manxers.—Our merchants are neither inclined to buy or sell flour at the present prices, so that the market is at astand still, all the arrival of the steamer fron Europe. ‘The general opinion hei is, that a further advance will take place on the receipt of the news. es Puitapecruia, Nov. 21, 1843 There is no local occurrence of importance to-day — Frazar’s benefit last night at the Chestout was an excel lent one. The pit and lower circle were crowded, but the second tier was not so full. Donnizetti’s comic opera of tho “Love Spell,” was performed, and was received With unfeigned delight by the audience. Howard & Co. Loss about $12,000, and no insurance. The en- | gentlemen composing this firm, are severe y this calamity, having invested much of what they possessed in the enterprise. ‘They have the sympa- thies of the community. Worse than all, was the loss of human life. A very worthy young man, the son of John HH. Varney, who was a watchman in the mill burnt to death. He retired to his bed about ten to tw ty minutes before the catastrophe occurred, his be be ing in the garret, and had probably fallen into sound ‘The feelings of his parents and frieudscan handily be imagined. The mill being within a few rods of his residence, the scene an! the reflections must have be tothem acutely painful. No person is blamed for thi occurrence. The fire caught from the falling of t! lamp from a lantern suspended over the lap-winder, which was in operation at the time. The books were not at the mill, and were saved _ANoTHER Steampoat Lost.—Capt Cornelius ar- rived in Louis last evening, from the wreck ot Mail, on the Missouri river. ‘This vessel, we learn, struck a’ snag about twenty-five miles above Jefferson City, was rounded to, and filled with water to the shore. “The boat is a total loss—the engine was saved. Corn is held at 55 cents—no sales yesterday. A de- | an mand has sprung up for prime Pork, and there are #eve- | ral orders in market at $11,00—holders were asking $11.25, $11,50.
