the Philadelphia Custom House, hasbeen here for several days, protessedly witn a view to the settle ment of his accouats, but only to lay an anchor to the windward for a new appointment. He 1s a man | of indomitable perseverance and energy, and it he | does not sucered, it will not be trom. a want of ef | fort. Going! going! gomg ! who bids ? | Calvin Blythe is also here. I mean the late | collector ot Philadelphia, and the nearly success- ful competitor for the nomination for Governor at the time Porter received the expression of the popu- lar voice. He is new, as he ever has been, the warm personal friend of Governor Porter, and for that very reason is not very popular with Mr. Bu- chanan. [tis rumored here that a Comptrollership has been tendered to him; but this | believe to be doubiful, and that his visit to Washington is con- nected entirely with bis accounts as Collector. Simeon Cameron, Senator elect from Pennsylva- nia, in place of James Buchanan, was here a tew days since and was closeted with the President, and subsequently with Mr. Walker. He is an inti- mate personal friend of the Secretary of State. His interviews with the President and Secretary of the | ‘Treasury were most probably connected with busi- ness, though there are some so uncharitable as to give a different version to the matter. The election of Hopkins L. Turney, in the Tennessee legislature, to the United States Senate, by whig votes, will be calculated to snengthen the position of Gen. Came- | concile the eas ron in that body. : Father Richie is much troubled about the priat- ing of Congress. The condition of things in Pennsy!- vania, will not be calculated to improve his pros- pects. It is thought that the Dallas faction are not very friendly to him, and the late article in refer- | ence to Mr. Buchanan, in the Richmond Enquirer, which has been copied so extensively, has not been calculated to inerease the feelings of friendship en- | iertained toward the organ in Pennsylvania, on the | part of the friends of Mr. Buchanan. The delega- | tions from Pennsylvania and New York will exer- cise an important influence in the settlement of this question. And much will depend upon the action ofthe Senate in reterence to the Collectorship of Philudelphia. Mr. Buchanan is supposed to be un- friendly to Mr. Horn, for the reason that Mr. Horn 18 opposed to him, and in favor of Mr. Dallas. The democracy of the interior of Pennsylvania call tor the rejection of Mr. Horn, while it is believed that Mr. Ritchie is in tavor of his confirmation. Thus it may be, thet Pennsylvania will exercise an im- | portant influence in the election of printer. A paper called the “ American Sentinel,” until re- cently edited by Peter Hay, who has turned ** Na- live,” and was one of their candidates at the re- cent election in Pennsylvania, bas within the last month or two contained a number of pungently written articles on Pennsylvania and national politics, said to be written by a gentleman of the name of Hay or Howe—a great Van Buren and Wright man—which has created not alittle sensa- tion here, notwithstanding the limited circulation ot the paper referred to. Sutherland is sapposed to | have had some sort of connection with these ar- ticles, but this supposition he avers to be entirely untounded ; though he, as well as the proprietors of the Sentinel, have certain political capital out of those articles, to judge from the government pap jourual above mentioned. ‘To sum up all | have here hastily thrown together, T have arrived at the conciusion that the rival forces ot * York and Lancaster” in Pennsylvania, will be very likely, from their private bickerings, the nomination of a candidate trom that the next Presidency—that the course ot Mr. Horn, as Collector, while it has not pleased the friends ot Mr Dallas, has displeased those of Mr. Buchanan, though his trends only are now continued in office scthat the dissatistaction thus created will have an el-ction of printer, if it important bearing on the shall be understood that Mr. Horn is to be sustained by the Penasylvania Semators—that all these diffieul- \ ly result in laying | tes and discussions may ultiata ou the shelt both Mr. Da the nomination in 1843 Cass, ors Pres, Mas and Buchanan, and in of either Mr Walker, Gen. las Wright’, as the candidate for the next idenvy. Kappa. Wasuine ron, Nov. 8, 1845. Miscellaneous— Assawt and Battery, $c. We have the pleasnre to inform you that Father Ritchie has got back sate and sound, and gay as a lark. Apprepos des botles, which, being interpreted into the Chaidiie, siguitieth appropos of the printing. We are desired by Messrs. Fisk and Heiss to con- tradict the report in a late volunteer letter to the Herddd, that there has been any talk looking to a Compromise between the officers (or the conduc- tors thereof) of the Union and U. S. Journal on the Subject of the printing. There has been, as we are intormed by both the gentlemen atoresaid, no pro- position of the kind intimated, at all, at all. Shortly after separating from Mr. Heiss on the Avenue this morning, we met the correspondent of the Charleston Mercury, coming from the opposite direction. There was a large abrasion on the neck of the correspondent, as it from the blow of a rough instrument of some sort. We inquired the cause ot the wound, when he deposed substantially as fol- lows: that between ten and twelve o’elock to day he went up to the Union office to settle for his half years subscription to the paper—that while waiting at the desk of the counting room for his receipt, Mr. John P. Heiss, one of the proprietors of the Uni . entered at the door behind, and struck him on the back of the neck with a stick, following up the blow with various ornamental epithets of destruction, and ordering the intruder out of the office. We are aman of peace—owe no man any ill will; but we do say that if Mr. Heiss had assailed us as he did our peaceable cotemporary, there would have been a fight of the worst kind’ in the Union office this morning. We suppose the offence to Mr. |feiss grew out of certain late strictures upon the organ by the Charles- ton Mercury. __ The prospect of war with Great Britain is assum- ing its due importance here, as the absorbing ques- tion before the next Congress. We are all pleased in ashington to hear of the election of Geo. Sykes of N. J., to the House. He as an excellent and upright man. We are informed that a trial was made with Lo- per’s propeller in the Potomac, a tew days ago, and that after getting under way, the momentum of the vessel appeared to average full two knots an hour all told. It this be the case, Loper’s propeller is not che article. " aa rhe weather is eloudy, chilly, fo; and blue. The city is as dull as at Hilgenunee Strangers are still holding back or passing through.
