managers in the colonies having included in this return several old debts, which, until this time, were hot sdpposed to be bad. The report of the bad and doubtful debts, up to the 31st December, 1844, compared with that of the six months ending 31st Juno, 1844, shows the following state of affairs : Increase of doubtful debts. . Increuse of bed debier "ay & § Jncrouse in doubtful cash 8 —-—— £1,716 6 2 credits and acco: * —-. 14. 7 4 Balance uf bad debts and See S doubtf int ones, according to last . report. ..... 82,175 13 6 Deduct Fonsi pod reser he half year enaing 30th June, 1844, 10,120 7 6 m £73,055 6 0 Balar ge according tothe present account. .£76,182 19 6 ' 4e directors regret much that in consequence of the ée of affairs, as shown by this report, that they are ol Jiged to recommend anew to the stockholders the ne © essity of abstaining from the taking of adividend, and that they consent to the allowing the balance of profit (after deducting £1000 for the proportion of half yearly expenses) which will amount to £9,776 12 5, to be ap- plied to the account of bad and doubtful debts, which will then be reduced to £66,406 6 10, The directors would ‘nave been highly flattered if in the present report they: could have furnished an incroas- ed amount of profits, as compared with those of the six months previous, but the sudden conclusion of the har” Vest in the colonies, at a most extraordinarily early s son, in consequence of avery unfavorable season, and 4s natural cons quence, the shortness of the crop, had the effect of cc nsiderably diminishing the operations o the bank, and also curtailing proportionably its profits to something ; Jess than those of the previous six months. However,i n comparing the total amount of profits du- ring 1844 with those of the previous year, they have ex- ceeded them by £2,200. © annex a statement showing the import and export rad’ 4 of Venezuela, for the year ending June 30, 1845. Fr om the official reports it appears that there has been ©. large increase in the import trade in 1844 and “45, compored with 1843 and ’44. The whole value of the imports: for the fiscal years 1843 and ‘44 amounts to $167,826,74, and for 1644 and °45 to $290,495,69 showing an increase of $132,666,95 in 1844 and ’45, or an increase of nearly 62 percent. ‘The comparison of the number of tons that have entered and left the Orinoco river during the past year, among which the national tonnage alone has amounted to 2364, whilst in the fiscal year 1843 and '44 it amounted to only 2381, or 17 tons more, and the foreign tonnage that arrived during that year amounted to 1054, while the number du- ring the year just closed only amounted to 976}, or 82} tons less, shows a favorable eondition of the trade of the republic under all the circumstances. Without regard to the decreased number of tons which have entered the Orinoco during the year 1844 and °45, we see that tho value of goods imported during the year amounted to $290.495 69, while for the previous year it only amounted to $157.92874, showing an increase in 1844 and 45 of $132,666 95 to'The exports of 1844 and ’45 amounted to $490.696 41, and of 1843 and ’44 to $604.19 86, showing a balanco in favor of 1843 and ’44 of $113.425 45. The foreign trade of | trad: the past two years will therefore exhibit the following | comparison : Commence or Venezuea. Excess of Imports. Exports exports. 1613 and 1844, 1844 and 1845, Increase 1845, Ges hag Decrease 1845, . . $113,423 45, $246,090 40 It must be remembered that in 1843 and "44 there were no export duties, which has had, no doubt, a very unfa- vorable influence upon the export trade of 1844 and’ 45.
