The ship meuts of breadstuffa will, without doubt, exceed those | of every other dercription of foou this year, in conse” | quence of the reduced production of wheat in the Uni- ted Kingdom. The United States generally will be more | bevefitted by the short harvest in Great Britain this year than over before, We have heretofore suffered all the evils, without the lesst offset by an increased consump: | tion of our grain, prices of cotton have been un- favorably affected, without producing an improve ment in prices for our breadstuffs. The deficiency of grain in Great Britain has heretofore been supplied from the continent, aud we have from our geographical posi- tion been shut out from all the benefits that agricultural countries usually derive from an exportation of surplus country te England was in 1840, when it reach- ed 620 128 barrel grain aud flour were imported into Great Britain. Io the year of the largest importation into England, she only re. ceived ubout one-eighteenth part of her supplies from thiscountry We nave not always had a surplus of agri- culture) products sufficiently large to require a very ex- tensive foreign demand, Within the past ten y we have been importers of breadstuls, and prices for flour in this murket have ranged from $4 00 per barrel to$10 50 | A $1. In March, 1887, flour sold in this city at $11 25 per barrel In the year of speculation and ex- pansion, in all tae staple articles of trade and commerce, when laborers were drawn from the cultiva tion of the soil, to all other employments, in vest num bers, the egricultural products of the country fell off s0 rapicly, that it was difficult at one time to supply even the demand for breadstuffs for domestic consumption without supplying any foreign demand. The result of this unnaturel state of things was a rapid advance in the price of wheat and flour, and a rapid increase in the pro- duction the year after. The cultivation of wheat being stimulated by high prices, and the explosion in commer- mercial affire driving thousands to the tillage of the soil: | increased the production in 1840 and 1841 80 much, that flour dropped to about $5 per barrel. In 1888 and ’39 there | was as much @ mania among the wheat growers, for the production of that grain, os there was in 1836 and 1887 to abandon their farms and engage in somo land or other speculation of those days. The production of grain in the United States, for four years, according to the returns the Commissioner of Patents, has be annexed, Quantity as Grain bf Ae in THE Uniren States, 1810 , 13. Bushels. Bushels. Bushels. Bushels 823.272 102,317.40 100,310,856 95,607 ,000 22 3.2007 145,929,966 24,289,271 7,999,410 1” These returns are, without doubt, as accurate as they an possibly be made; but when we take into considere_ tion the immense extent of soil within our limits, ano the difficulty daily experienced in obtaining correct re turns from even the amallost districts, it appears reason- able that great allowance should bemade. We there- fore consider it proper thnt at Jeast twelve and a half per cent should be added to the quantities set down in the returns referred to, as approximating nearer to the actu- al production of the country. The largest exportation of flour from the States was in 1840, when it amounted to 1 893,121 barrels, valued, at the ports of shipment, at $10,143,615, or equal to about one-fifth the value of our | exports of cotton. The crop of wheat this year has been unusually abundant, amounting to at least 126,- 660,000 bushe! form. Of this we can spare for exportation about 15,000,000 bushels, or 3,000000 barrels of flour. The consumption of wheat in this country will be much greater this year than it was last, in consequence of the partial failure of owr corn and potatocrops. Notwith- standing this, the quantity we can spare for exportation will be fullas large bove stated The crops of grain in Groat Britain, and the surplus of Inst yea ports, will be sufficiently large to supply the domestic consumption for nine or ten months, which will require an importation from abroad, without interfering at all with the consumption of cotton. The short harvest will be hardly felt until just before the next crop comes in, when the deficiency will be better known; prices for breadstuffs will, however, in the mean time, rule high, and speculation to some extent will be produced by the anticipated short supply. Large ship- ments from this side have already been and will con tinue to be made, on foreign and domestic account, and wo have at present vory little doubt but that exports of flour made from this country at any thing under six dol- lara per barrel, will prove profitable. We annex an ac- count deteiling the charges ona shipment of four hun- dred barrels of flour from New York to Liverpool, and showing the net amount received per barrel, at the port of shipment :— Suiptente or Fiour to Exotann. It appea: fore, pretty certain that we shall have the coatrol of the corn markets of Great Britain, this year, more than we | have ever had before. In consequence of the short c' op of potatoes in all parts of Europe, and the short harve-t of corn in the principal grain growing districts of the | contirent, from which supplies in former years have ways been received, the consumers of Great Britain must look to this country for breadstuffs; and whether they go through the ports of Canada, or more direct, by the way of our own seaports, the producers o this country will receive the benefit of the external de. | mand, particula ly as it comes at this early day in the season, before they have parted with their stocks.
