- miles, and fe extent of the advantages to be derived from this lip will be seen from the following table of dis- tances froy Albany to Goderich, on the way to Chicago on Lake Nchigan, the great emporium of the western trade, byfree routes, and from Buffalo to Goderich by Lake the proposed line, From #any, by Syracuse, Oswego, and the Welland Canal rich, 729 miles. From sIbany, through Buffalo to the same point, 749 miles. Fromplbany, through Oswego and Toronto, to Gode- rich, 47 miles—or less than the Buffalo route by 270 | miles, 44 less than the Oswego and Welland Canal route | by 250niles, Fror Buffalo to Goderich, via Lake Erie, 393 miles. From /uffalo to Goderich, via Toronto, and the propos line, miles, or a saving between Buffalo and Goderich by th proposed line of 204 miles. It janticipated that the saving in time to travellers, by th propored line, will secure to it the whole of the immnse passenger traffic between the North-eastern andVestern parts of the Continent of North America, andthat the revenue from this source, at present en. | grosed by the steamboat companies on Lake Erie, will be tholly attacted by this company. The ordinary time whph is now taken by a steamer to go from Detroit on theSt. Clair to Buffalo, in the summer, varies from thity-six to forty eight hours; and in the months of Setember and October, from forty-eight to seventy-two | hars; whereas the traveller from Detroit, by way of Gderich and the proposed line, during all the period of | th navigation on Lake Ontario, will reach Buffalo in | trenty-two hours; Rochester, in twenty-seven; Os- | wego, in forty-one ; Kingston, in forty-three ; and Mon- | teal, in sixty-three hours. To travellers between the | +tlantic Ocean and the extensive territories on Lake flichigan and the Mississippi, the proposed line will be of greater importance, for Goderich is nearer than De- troit to Lake Michigan by 120 miles, and Buffale may _ be reached from Goderich, by the proposed line, in | enhours, There are at present, at the port of Buf- | falo, sixty steamers of the largest class emvloyed in the conveyance of passengers from Buffalo to Detroit and the Upper Lakes; the number of passengers by this route fluctuates from 5000 to 7000 weekly, for about fiv months in the year. There are, at the same port, 300 sailing vessels, of 26,400 tons burthen in the whole, en, &°ged in the western commerce. These vessels are em. ployed for little more than six months in the year, the port of Buflulo being closed for three weeks later in the spring and earlier in winter, than the ports of Toronto, | Goderich and Detroit. In the year 1836, a company was incorporated by the provincial legislature to construct a railway from Toron- | toto Lake Huron, and it was only from the insutticiency | of capital that the work has not hitherto been carried | into operation. This act was revived and amended during the last session of the provincial legislature. ‘The railway will commence at the city of Toronto, the chief town of Western Canada, which has at present 4 population of about 19,000 souls, with the best port on the upper part of Lake Ontario, and surrounded by the most populous and ftourishing district in the province, | and will pass through an exceedingly favorable line to the port of Goderich, the best harbor on the Canadian shore of Lake Huron. This line will, in afew years, effect for the towns through which it will pass, what | the Eno Canal has effected for Buffulo and the places alongits line. In the year 1824, previous to the opening of the Erie canal in that year, Buffalo was an imconsider- able village, having a population of about 4,000 souls | only. In the year 1830, which was only the sixth year from the opening of that canal, it contained a population | of 8653 ; and it has now become the chief commercial city inthe Union, upon the western waters, and com- prehends a population of about 29,000 souls. ‘The proposed line shortens the distance between Lakes Ontario and Huron by 270 miles, and avoids the circui, | tous, and, at some periods ofthe year, dangerous na- | vigation of Lake Erie, and willform the cheapest, most | direct, and expeditious communication between the | wealthy ond populous States bordering on the Atlantic, | and the Territories intersected by the two great canals lately constructed in Wisconsin and Illinois, to connect Lake Michigan with the M pi. There are no engi- | neering difficulties on the line, there being a gradual es- | cent from Toronto for the distance of thirty miles; and | the remainder of the line is almost upona dead level. | The following census of the population of the States | and Territories between which and the Eastern States, | the proposed line will form tho most direct communica- tion, will serve to show not only its immense impor. | tance in anational point of view, but also the tratflic | which must accrue to the line immediately on its com. | | | pletion. PoruLation oF THE States AND Territories Connecren | with THis Work. | 1041, 182, 1845* | 37,133 49,524 80,000 | 51,834 69,178 110,000 | SR917 692,653 000 754 202 $22,598 1,000,000 248,331 284) ; 5,100 7,500 + Estimated. This enormous increase in the population of these ter. ritories is derived from emigration, itself a sufficient source.of revenue for the maintenance of the railway. Lake Ontario is the natural channel for the transit of goods westward from Montreal. The superiority of this route over that of the Erie Canal, for the transit of goods | from the States, is found in the fact that the navigation of Lake Ontario is always open early in April, and gene rally in March, and three weeks before the opening of the Erie Canal, at Albany, and the facility of communi. | cation between Toronto and the wealthy and rapidly pro- gressing commercial cities of Oswego and Rochester, | Points out the advantage of completing the connection | with Lake Ontario by so cheap and expeditious a route. In connection with this contemplated road, it will be | necessary to complete the railroads in Michigan, running | across the peninsula from Detroit and the line from Sy- | racuse to Oswego in this State. The construction of these roads would open a rapid communication with | Chicago, which would be useful nearly a third longer in the year, than the modes of transportation now depend- ed upon. There is no section of this continent se pecu- liarly adapted for the construction of railroads, or where | they are likely to be more productive than in the vicini- ty of ourgreat inland lakes, The rapid increase in the | population, the fertility of the soil, and the immense mi- | neral resources, plainly indicate that the lake States | must ultimately be the wealthiest portion of the country | from which supplies of almost every necessary of life | will be drawn for the maintenance of other sections: | The advantages of opening rapid modes of communica. | tion, between that and all other sections of the country, | are already so great, that every feasibly route will, be. | fore many years, be secured.
