The shipments from | WwW New York being for only eight months, and those from Boston fortwelve, This does not look much like Boston being the provision market of the United States. The exportation of fish from Boston is much larger than from any other port in the Union. The shipments of these ar, ticles from this port in the fall months are very exten- sive, generally equal to the cther three seasons: it would, therefore, be no more than just to nearly double iven above in estimating the exports for the two cities in these staples. The official statement of the quantityof flour imported into this port for each of the past four years, does not show any very great decrease fn the movements of that staple in this market. A few years since the merchants of that city imported nearly all their supplies of foreign manu factures by the way of New York, but their lines of Lil verpool packets, and the British ers, furnish them with Joreign goods direct. There i of capital employed in mercantile business in Boston, more, in proportion to the business transacted, than in any other city in the Union, and the advancement making in the foreign and domestic trade of that port is upon a basis too solid for competition to destroy. The numerous worke of internal improvement in New Eng. load, starting from Boston and running into the interior of each of the States of that section, and connecting with the public works of New York, give that city a position eminently calculated to increase its internal and external co merce. The various railroads of the East have not been constructed at an immense ex- pense so much for profit as for the ultimate advantages they must give that over every other section of the country, With every dvantage to contend against: concerned, the citizens of Boston have, within the past ton years, advanced the value of landed property and in- creased the conmerce of their city more rapidly than | w over realized in the history of any Atlantic city in the | Union. This fact is perfectly plain, and requires no | showing the value of personal | and real estate, to demonstrate it. The modes of taxation | comparative statement: in the two cities vary #0 much that it is impossible to tell the position of the two cities as regards wealth, in that way. A very large portion of Boston prop-r is appropriuted | to commercial pursuits, and therefore covered with largo and tate and personal estate in the city. The citizens of Bos- ton have been compelied to resort to tho neighboring towns for dwelling places, and East Boston, South Bo ton, Cambridge, Charlestown, Cheisea, Roxbury, &o., have been very rapidly filling up with houses for the re- | sidences of those doing business in Boston. One hun- dred and forty-seven houses were built in South Boston, and one hundred and fifty-seven in East Boston, in ten months Neasly one half of Boston proper is covered with buildings similar to those in the first and second wards of this city. It is therefore apparent that a com: parison of the value of real eatate on the whole Manhattan, with that of Boston proper, is no indication of the rela wealth of the two cities. The Cabinet and the Commencement of Columbia College—Important Movement in Virginia onthe Subject of Edueation—The Rrchmond Whig and Enquirer shaking hands in the Movement—The State Baxks—‘Their Condition and Expansion— Reasons for Apprehending another Revulsion by- and-by—Miscellancous Matters. The President, and his Cabinet, (saving Mr. Bu- chanan, who is off to Pennsylvania to consult with his people in reference to his propos.d retirement from the Cabinet, as suspected) are al! attending to-day the celebration of the Annual Commence- meant (or termination, rather) of the Columbia College, in the large and commodious Tenth street Baptist Church, known as Rev. O. B. Brown's Church. The Columbia College is situated « mile north of Washington City; but that, as Mr. Cod- dington says, is prett much all we do know about it. Our friends of Georgetown College uniformly | send us on commencement day, an invitation and a | program , and they lose nothing by their courtesy. dad the Faculty of the Columbia College followed this politic example, we should have been pleased to give a more extended report of their proceedings to- day. The church, itis true, was open to the pub- lic, but was so crowded when we came up as to ren- der anentrance impossible. The proceedings con- sisted of recitations in prose and verse, interspe: with zasior sha award of medals, premiums, de- grees, Xe. é Apropos of this subject of education. Virginia, so long asleep; old Virginia, that great old State of ours, going down hill so long in every thing except State pride, which, indeed, as much as any thin; else, has accelerated her down-hill movemeat-zoll sg aa we say, 18 at last stirring herself. ¢ people are waking up after studying over the | compendium of the last census, and finding that | there is an average—a humiliating average—of one | free white person to every twelve, whose signature | from disability to read or write, is his or her cross- ; mark. Heaven save the mark—the crose-mark, of | course. It is time to wake uy upon such a discovery as this. We Triaice: in behalt of our good old State, God bless her, that she is about to rise, like Zion, “shake the dust from her feet, and put on her beau- | tiful garments.” Fellow-citizens, let us goto work, and build school-houses, and call in the schoolmas- 1 Small Potatoes , ter, who has been abroad so long, that we are: left or All-but-Sassy | in almost outer darkness. Let us move all parties, | all sects, all classes—let us move in this matter, "| with the unanimity of the Siamese twins. There ppears to be such a movement in progress. The al | Richmond Whig stands out in the nobility of hu- manity, for this good, saving cause of education. The Enquirer upon this subject, lays down | hatchet, and in offering the pipe of peace, says :— | “Brother, we will go together in this work.” On SUNDAY, a Grand Selection of Sacred Mune—Ad- | We like that sort of talk. Let the Sirginia cross-fire now and then, that shallecho like Spring thunder among the mountains. Go on, ye good tel- lows of the Whig—go on,ye noble youngsters of the | Enquirer—come out for the old State, ye Rip Van Winkle county presses, and before two years are | past, we shall have, in full blast, in five hundred new noua houses, morning exercises, such as fol- OWS i— First person singular, I love, &e., First person plural, we love, &c.— Grand mathematical conclusion:—I love, thou lovest, he loves, we love, you love, they love, we all love one another, we love our country, our Creator, our government; and it 1s education that has taught itall. Hurrah! "i On the subject of banks. From authentic evi- dences examined to-day, there has been for the last year or two such a general inflation of the circula- | ton and deposits of the State Banks, as must even- | tuate, at or before the next Presidential election, in another panic—another season of distress—another | breaking up of manufacturing monopolies, mercan- tile ey ee over ee Spi The event, in the ic language of John Van Buren, appears to | be Fas eure as God.” “The Massachusetts Banks, for instance, with an increasing redundancy of | paper deposits, have created by their example a | mania for investments in railroad stocks. Pay | day must come, and they will be found wanting. ‘The present system of deposits of the public moneys, is evidently contributing its full share to the expan- | sion of the paper circulation. The general increase | of the circulation and dgposits of the banks, within two years past, appears to be not less than thirty- | three and a third per cent, saving the banks of New | Orleans, which, from our information at the trea- | sury department, are in a sound and safe condition, present and perspectively. ‘The Itinois banks, from | their broken down condition have been unable to | inflate. The new system in Ohio, if continued, (and the political complexion of the next legislature will decide that question.) wil, speedily bring ona revulsion in that State, deranging the business and the credit of that commonwealth for years to come thereafter. It will, therefore, be presented to the next Congress, as a means of safety to the national finances, that they should be withdrawn in season from deposit with the banks, and placed under the security of the Sub-Treasury system ; but whether the banks will not be able to control an advan ous modification of the law to themselves, remains | Jahn Fall to be seen. There will be a hard fight, at all events, between a clear unmitigated Sub-Treasury, and a hybrid system compounded of the Exchequer, a Na- tional Bank, the Pet Bank system and the Sub-Trea- sury. The Bank Report from the Treasury Department | in 1841, by Mr. Gouge, occupies some 1400 pages of document printing. Mr. Gouge was expelled by Ewing, and with his expulsion the annual Bank Re- port to Congress was stopped. FPL Neg rein- stated by the present administration, he has the duty now assigned him of bringing up by the next Congress, the condition of the Banks of the coun- | try annually, for four years. He expects, however, | to bring up the whole business by December next, and we expect his books will Por to the commer- | cial world the most valuable of all the valuable documents that will be printed by the next Con- Tess. ers a A new weekly paper has been started in this city, published by Messrs. Harris and Heart, of the Constitution. It is entitled “Aurora—Periodico, Politico y Literario”—printed in Spanish, French and English. ‘ : ‘A prospectus has also been issued by Mr. William | Green, of a periodical Journal of the Patent Office, which we think is a good idea, and might be turned to good account. ‘ here was afight between two bull dogs in the President’s House yesterday. Martin must have been away from his post, or they never would have been admitted. ‘There was a street fight between two men aleo yesterday, and there was good cause for it. The printer of Anne ‘Royall’s paper, called “The Hun- tress,” surreptitiously, it appears, inserted and pub- lished in a number of copies of the last week’s is- sue, a slanderous article on a respectable young man holding office in one of the departments.— Yesterday the injured person met the offenderand chastised him after the old right aid left style.— The circumstances of the whole affair, as detailed tous, are very discreditable to the offending printer, and for the honor of the craft we hope he never do the like again.
