Mr. Brown, Mr. Ritchie, and the New Yorf@He- rald—The Cherokee Indvins—A New Movement Texas, the United States and'the Public Lands of Texas—An Important Proposition for the Govern- ment—Secretary Marcy and Major Noah—The “Kane Letter” —Cabinet Cowneils and the Public Printing— George Bancroft. The Hon. Wm. J. Brown, of Indiana, late of the House of Representatives, but now Chief Clerk of the Sixth Auditor’s office, has a very lucid and pa- triotic letter in the Union of last evening, expressly directed against an on dit in one of our late com munications, to wit: That said Mr. Brown was to be made Third Auditor, on condition that the Indi- ana democratic delegation went for the Union edi- tor as printer to the House Mr. Brown denies, with becoming dignity and decision, any such er- Fangement. Of course he would scorn any partici- pation in such a movement. It was a rumor, and we gave it for what it would bring in the market. It has brought out Mr. Brown and Father Ritchie. Poor dear old Papa, how the pesky letter writers do bother him. And what does Father Ritchie say ? That these same letter writers are employed here in the dissemination of misrepresentations throughout the country ; or, to use his owa words, our dear old Papa,(and God knows we love him) says: “We are aware that scribblers are employed here to get up misrepresentations, and circulate them for ainsi markets.” But Father Ritchie does not stop here. He continues—* We could lay our fingers upon the wire-workers, as well as the wires themselves.” We asked Dow, of the U. 8. Journal, this morn- ing, if he were one of ‘the wire-workers,” or one Hite who were issuing “circulars to solicit votes.” He said “no!” We have not seen Messrs. Harris & Heart, of the Constitution, or either ot them to-day. If they are guiltless, Father Ritchie’s inuendo falls to the earth. Sincerely, we like the delicacy of the dear old man upon this important matter of the public printing. He neither writes nor speaks upon the subject, though we calculate that, like the Inshman’s owl, * though he hasn’t spoke as yit, in hearing, he keeps up a divil of a think:ng.” We desire to keep everything straight as we along. Our object is the truth, and the whole truth. The editor of the organ, we know it, acts upon the motto that discretion is better than truth; but while he walks round the truth in many instances as a school-boy would creep round a rattlesnake in his path, he has not the discretion of the school-boy to pass quietly on and leave the “‘varmint” alone. He | must have, as John Van Buren, (and, by the way, Jehn is a trump card,) ‘he must have a shy at him ;” and the consequence is, he gets bitten just as John did in the Paterson railroad stock. We have never met with a younger old man than Father Rit- chie in every sense. We learn by intelligence from Arkansas, that a number ot dissatisfied Cherokee Indians were about leaving the Cherokee reservation in said State, on an exploring excursion into that long strip of north- ern Texas, weat and south-west of Arkansas, and flanking the Rocky Mountains. Among this ex- loring party we notice the names of Charles Reese, Taman Starr, Ezekiel Starr, Joseph M. Lynch, Dr. J. L. Thompson, Matthew Moore, Jesse Hayfield, John Hornage, John A. Bell, and others. ‘e are personally acquainted with some of these men, and now them to be intelligent, educated, civilized, and enterprising fellows. These people are dissatisfied with the government of John Ross. They desire to get away from it; and the people of Arkansas seem equally desirous of placing on their western fron- tier, as a guard against the Camanches, asettlement of the civilized Cherokees, under the protection of the government. _ ; The scope of country referred to, is a portion of Texas, as yet entrely Vacant—it is a portion of the reat grazing range of the buil nd alon, ase of the mountains is, periiays, unsurp beautiful landscapes, delicious witer, | woods, game, and salubrity of ¢ You will recollect, peri wong the pro- ceedings of the Textan Conur » June last, wasa bill introduced, we think, by ( v5. man, of the Senate, to ve very section of ! countr lying betwee vansas und Red Kiver: ye payne, ey tebt of Texas, and to preveut holders of serip trom tneumbering it with locations. Here 13 a beat the General Governm field opened for. the ection of nt Inthe wradual filliag up of Arkansas with a white population, increasing aifficulties and annoyances will be Likely to arise between them and the Cherokees—but by the ap- propriation of this long strip of country, stretching: west of the Arkansas, northward some hundreds o| miles, under the shadows of the Rocky Mountains tothe Red people, a permanent home would be | provided for them, beyond which, on account of the | Roady of the mountains, no attempt would ever be made to remove them. The necessity of the United States Government to obtain absolute control over this uninhabited but fertile strip of country, is obvious at a glance— and was undoubtedly apparent to the Texas Legisla- | tor, in the introduction of his bill before the late Congress of that now defunct Republic. The dis- satisfied Cherokees themselves evidently expect to | be removed, or to be permitted to remove. Hence this exploring party. E TheGeneral Government ought to avail itself of this | feasible opportunity to acquire [egrhes of this Northwestern strip of Texas by a bona fide purchase | of Texas, of the territory, before it is absorbed by white speculators. It will, of course, be the pol | of Texas, in looking to the prompt payment of her | public debt, to bring her \ ee domain speedily into the market, as her only medium of raising the means ; and she cannot be expected to permit her lands to be overrun and occupied by the United States Cherokees no more than by any other people, without receiving compensation therefor. We believe there isa Cabinet Council to-day.— | We guess, trom a bird that whispers us occasional- | ly, that at more than one of the late Councils the jouse printing and the Organ have superceded the uestion of troops to Texas, or ships to the Gulf.— That is the great question—the printing of the House. The very existence of Col. Polk’s administration depends upon the election of Father Ritchie as | printer to the House of Representatives. The list must be examined—the disaffected discovered, and blisters or emollients applied to cure them of their irritations. Father Ritchie will get the printing of the House. a a The Secretary of the Navy, George Bancrott, the “last rose of summer,” has a way sut generis for the reception of visitors, and as the clown would say, he “selects his company ;” any of the epaulet- ted and gold lace gentry of the army or navy are promptly attended to, and are not long kept “dan- cing in attendance ;” but an honest jack tar must wink wait the pleasure of the high functionary, al- thoug! two minutes would suffice to transact all he would wish. A case in point. A sailor who has recently been discharged from the frigate St. Louis has been for three days at the door of the Secretary of the Navy, “knocking for admittance,” with a check, for five years pay in his hand, on the Exchange Bank of Virginia, which was refused to K. BULL has the honor of announcing that his first Con | be cashed in specie at the bank. He had called for the purpose of laying his complaints before the Se- cretary trom day to day for near a week, and could not get to see him. Another instance, a sailor re- quired the signature of the Secretary to a letter which from the duties of his office he is compelled to sign, yet he keeps the poor fellow waiting hour after hour. Such conduct is not altogether demo- cratic it must be acknowledged! We shall have to report this aristocratic conduct, Mr. Secretary, if it is continued. Wasmixaton, Sept. 30, 1845.
