Texas val be a great country atthe expiration of two years-~great in population and wealth, a8 it is now mm egricultu- raland mineral resources. A “notion” is already spoken of fora railroad from the heed stream of the Rio Grande across t'ae Cordilleras which fre | flat table lands in that re gion to the head'waters of one of the navigable rivers emptying into the Gulf of California; the idea of the possession of California being an incidental acquisition as a certain and speedy event of the future. This overlard comm nication will command the vast prospective trade of the Pacific, throw ing it into the ehennel of the Rio Grande Dek No rte “(the grand river of the North) aang it imperative on the part of the Uaited States by concession or negociation, to acquire that | eal to its ‘Southern beni as our ‘Southern boun- lary A reference to the map will show that this conti- nental intercommunication between the Gulf of Mexico an d the Pacific, is practical and cheap, pre- senting @ | shorter route_by two thousand miles than _ that from the mouth of the Columbia via the great | south lee #8 of the Rocky Mountains, the Platte river, ‘and the Missouri to St. Louis. Where is to be the end,of our destiny ? } ” Meantime, the plot invisibly but sensibly thickens, | regarding the movements in the party oe the next ; Congress. But of these movements we shall speak | more elaborately at an early day. There are already " six or seven candidates for the office of sergeant-at- arms of the Senate ; and among the candidates for door-keeper, is Major Dade, of Virginia, whose term as warden of the District Penetentiary, expires by his being superceded on the first of October,— he Major has some thirteen or fourteen cousins among the senators, and here isno telling what this family infiuence may do. The movement of Mr. J. L. O'Sullivan, of New York, lately so successfully made in ty in be- half of a National Bronze Equestrian Statue to Jackson, is said to look tar ahead, in favor of Silas Wright for the Presidency. lt will certainly be an advantage to Wright's friends in the campaign of °48 that they were the first to move in this national testimonial to the revered hero of New Orleans.— This should be capital, however, well secured, to be turned to any account. We shall transmit the to-morrow a brief sketch of a visit which we had the honor to make to-day to / pepe ay the seat of G. W. P. The natives have held several mass meetings of lat and have succeeded in humbugging some two or three | hundred mechanics, principally democrats, into an adhe- rence to their fanatical and corrapt schemes. The bait theyhold out here to catch minnows with is,the competi- tion of foreign born mechanics with those of native birth, which they contend is breaking down prices and ruining th business. It is true\that German mecha- nics are overrunning several of the trades, working for any price they can get, but how, under the Constitution of the United States, is nativeism to remedy the evil ? They might as well preach against the introduction of shoes and boots from the New England States because the Baltimore shoemakers cannot compete with them in prices. But like all other gull-trape it takes, and the consequence will be a much heavier native vote than was anticipated. ‘Theatrical continue to flourish, especially at the Hol- liday street theatre, which has the best stock company, under the management of old Blake, that has been in Baltimore these ten years. Consequently the house is crowded nightly with the elite of the city. Hackett closed an engagement at the Front street house on Fri- day night, drawing poorly, as usual. Wood, the panto- mimist, commences an engagement atthe Front str@et ‘Theatre this evening. Brougham, the delineator of Irish character, is performing to good houses at the Museum. ‘The ship Marianne arrived yesterday from Bremen with 186 emigrants, which will doubtl pital for the natives at their mass meeting Tue Makkers.—There was nothing new in the mar kets on Saturday afternoon, generally spe: itis probable that the news by the steamer will causea slight reduction in flour this merning. ‘The last sales of How- ard street flour were made at $4 56}—the receipt price at $4 374, and light receipts. The last sale of City Mille flour was at $4 00 ; holders on Saturday, however, were asking more ; very small stock onhand. Sales of Sus- quehanna flour have taken place to a limited extent at $4 62). The market ow bar White wheat, for family flour, is worth 98 a 100 cents. We quote good to prime Maryland reds at 88 to 94 cents, and ordinary to good at 78 to 88 cents. 1 quote white corn at 48 a 49 cents, and yellow do. at 50a 51 cents per bushel. Oars 31 a 32 cents; rye 63 a 65 cents. 3 I quote whiskey at 26 cents in barrels, and 24 cents in hhds.—demand fair. Purtaperenia, Sept. 22, 1845, Mr. B. F Mifflins retirement— Buchanan and Dallas—Rioters committed, and the Law e Vindicated—Rumored Coalition of Parties—French Opera and Theatricals-The Weather, Business, Stock Markets, $e Our politicians have been thrown into considerable fermentation by the announcement in the Pennsylvanian. this morning that Benjamin Mifflin, the senior partner in the firm of Mifllin & Parry, and an old and respected democrat, had retired from that concern, leaving it in the hands of his late partner, and a young man of abilities named A, Boyd Hamilton. The Pennsylvanian has un- questionably been the ablest, as it is the leading demo- cratic paper in the State. It has always advocated the democratic doctrines of the school of Van Buren and Wright, and is high in favor with the present Stato ad- ministration. What its stand is with the National Ad- ministration | know not. It has always been friendly to the Secretary of State, Mr. Buchanan, and though re- fusing to join in the hasty and ill-arranged movements of the too warm friends of that gentleman, with a view to his elevation to the Presidency, its conductors would, sured, be highly pleased at his advance ment to that dist ngulshes station. Mr. Mifflin, I believe, did not approve of these movements, becau: he foresaw, what has since become manifest, that they would operate prejudicial to the prospects ‘not‘onl: of Mr. Buchanan, but of Ls man hailing me nie vania, For this exercise of a sound judgment Mr. Mift- Jin has been set down by the political hucksters of the day, most unjustly, as an enemy of the Secretary of State, and #s the peculiar friend ofthe Vice-President. That he is a warm personal and political friend of Mr. Dallas is apparent, but he has carefully abstained from doing any tl ing which would cause dissensions between the friends the two distinguished Pennsylvanians. Like all men who endeavor to moderate the violence of two factions,he has incurred the resentment of both. In laboring to prove that the inter of Pennsylvani would be sacrificed by the indiscretion of certain friends ofboth her statesmen, he has made himself liable to their animadversions. ‘The friends of Mr. Buchanan re- arded him as an opponent, while the friends of Mr. allas reproached him with lukewarmness in the cause of their favorite. Meanwhile y two distinguished gen- of 3 nt at po: bles and would give hearty support to either.
