Anew wholesale establishment was recently opened on Baltimore street, and an advertisement published iving the names of two of the partners, and stating that fe third one would be announced in afew days. Some time havign elapsed without the appearance ofthe third partner, it began to excite some conversation in the mer- cantile circles, when a vacant warehouse in close proxi- mity was rented, in which to hibit a three-horned Rocky Mountain ox, Some wags getting wind of the matter, circulated a report that the third partner had ar- rived direct from the Rocky mountains, and taken up his quarters in the vacant warehouse. ‘The new firm hearing of the joke, and not relishing it, insisted that the exhibition was a nuisance, and demanded its immediate removal, which caused considerable of a rumpus, and the services of Justice Schaeffer having been precured, he was unceremoniously ousted in the presence of about t hundred persons, who had collected together to witness the contest between the three-horned firm and the three-horned bull. Thus farcically ended a farce which will keep the risible faculties exeited in that vi- cuity. Srock Boanp—Maryiand 6's closed yesterday at 77} for sale, and 79} bid. The jury in the case of Jacob Shaw, charged with murder, in knocking a loafer on the head with a mallet, after being out all last night, returned into court this morning with a verdict of murder in the seeond degree The prisoner was sentenced to seven years in the East- ern Penitentiary, solitary confinement at hard labor. The different parties have commenced the political campaign inearnest. The democrats bave had their first _ Meeting at Hollahan’s, and thejwhigs have also held their's. As theywere mere beginnings, there was no occa- sion for adjournments to the open air, but there was con- siderable enthusiasm displayed on both sides. Speeches were made denouncing the natives, and there is an a] pearance of a strong eflurt being made by the whigs in the city and county torally the whole strength ef the party upon their ticket. IM they persevere the natives will be defeated and the whig nominees for the State House Row will be successful. The day is warm andclear. There is a dearth of lo cal new: Mr. and Mrs. Kean continue todraw crowded houses. Last night they edin the “Stranger” and to-night inthe comedy of “Wonder.” An impetus has been given to theatricals by this engagement, which if pro- od improved will make this the greatest season since the days of the elder Kean, and the management of the Warrens. The fever is fast getting up, andjwhen it does reaeh its height there is no knowing where it will stop. The play- ‘cing public promise themselves great gratification be- fore the close of the season. The Arch has been drawing crowded house: nightly” Connor pl yed Tuchelien night before last for his benelit, nd he has been playing successfully in other charac: Burton has two strings to his theatrical bow in this y, and he certainly keeps them tight at work in plea- sing all the tastes of the city from the classic and grace- {ul legitimate, to the strong and vigorous melo dramatic. He has wisely, however, placed the two articles in se. parate shops, to avoid jarring, so that there might be no interference with the different tastes of the differ- ent audienc Stock sales to-day were animated. Since the departure of the Caledonia from Boston, there has been so little activity in this market, that very: little change has taken place'in prices. The receipts of this staple at the southern ports, since the commence- ment of the new season, show an increase compared with last year, while the exports show a falling off. The movements of the article this season, have been as an- nexed :— Recrivrs axp Exrontation or Corton. The stock on hand at the close of the season 1845, was about sixty-five thousand bales less than at the same date last year, and several hundred bales less than on the same da year previous. This shows that the sales for year were larger than ae | any previous one, and that the supplies were nearly cleared out ay fast as they came in. ‘The crop last year was about 370,000 bales less than that of this year, and the stock left in first hands at the close of the year, was nearly double that of this yeur ‘The receipts this season thus far, would warrant us in estimating a larger yield this year than last, but we are not disposed to look at it in that light. ‘The accounts received from the South, report very unfavorably of the pastseason. The hl, fe in some sections has tindoubt- edly been very severe, but perhaps not sutticiently so to affect the additional breadth of land devoted to the cult. vation of the plant. Throughout the last planting sea. son, the most favorable advices reached the Cotton es tions of the country from the European mar. ‘ets, and stimulated the production to a great extent.— A speculative movement of some magnitude existed in Liverpool during the month of February and March last, and this fact, no doubt, had a very great influence upon the operations of the planters at that time, and induced to putas much land as possible into cotton. There Was considerable discussion in the southern papers early in the season in relation to holding conventions for the purpose of limiting or reducing the cultivation of this staple, but wedo not believe that the cultivation of the plant has been reduced ‘The manufacturers of Great Britain inv: culative ely le, purposely to increase the production in th try resulting generally in the derived cflect. It is a very heavy item in our family expenses, and we are therefore lead to make some enqniry as to the cause of the present extortionate rates. We find that the great advance has been caused by an effort on the part of country speculators, assisted by heavy dealers and others here, to monopolize the arti- cle as it comes forward, and by taking advantage of the partial dry season in some to keep ‘up a cry of a short crop. We are authority, that we shall have mut a’ large surplus. If it nerset in the usual way we scuerate prices, and the farmer ‘tion.
