Grand Lodge—Canton Race Course—Circusses and Theatricals —d Swartwouter—Onderdonk Movements—Markets, | $e. A few minutes after I closed my letter yesterday, the tolling of the bell at St. Vincent de Paul’s Church an- nounced the death of its pastor, the Rev. Mr. Schreiber. It was apparently a signal for the Catholics from all sec- tions of the city to flock to the church, and it was soon filled with mourners inside and out. state for the public view, and in the course of the day thousands visited the house for the purpose of seeing him. The Rev. Mr. Gildes, who was pastor of this church, died but a few months since, and his successor has soon fol- lowed him. The annual session of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fel- lows, convened at the Odd Fellows’ Hall, yesterda Among the delegates, t'.ere are no less than two ex. ernors, and several reverend gentlemen. As repre: tatives of Grand Lodges, 1 observe the names of David D. Egan, and B.C. True, of New York; and as represen- tatives of Encampments, Charles McGowan, and F. W. Gilley, of New York. John A. Kennedy, Past Grand Sire, of New York, is also present. They are a fine telligent looking body of men, and conduct their busi- ness with great dignity and decorum. The proprietor of the Canton Race Course anticipates I sem) of the best stables in th pproaching y this course of the winner receiving the purse has been obviated by an association of gentlemen of wealth who have become personally responsible for it in all cases, so that hereaiter no difficulty is to be anticipated on this score. This has been made known, and arrangements have been made with the proprietors of stables from all ections to bring on their horses. Consequently it is pected that many a crack nag will be here, among them it is thought that Boston and Fashion will probably contend for the four mile purse. Messrs, Rockwell and Stone’s equestrian establish- ment entered the city yesterday and made quite a dis- | lay. Welco and Delavan’s will be here ina tew days. | ‘The Holiday street theatre was crowded last night to see the Hunchback performed—Mr. and Mrs. Wallack | sustaining the principal characters. Marshall's stock company drawing about as well as ton’s,with Mrs. Mowatt and Crisp, As the latter is under the heaviest expense, it may be tairly inferred that the former is making the most money. A young man who had sloped from Boonsboro’, Md., With about $7000 of his employer’s money, was yester- day arrested at the railroad depot in this city, with about $5000 of the money on his person, | As the time approaches for the meeting of the Protes- tant Episcopal Convention of New York, considerable flutter: derdonk in this city, The ladies ure at work inreal earn- nest, and Bishop Wittingham will be there onthe ‘Ath armed cap-a pie in behalf of his reverond friends. ‘The ladies, as is invariably the case with their “sober second thought,” pronounce the man more sinned against | than sinning, whilst their owm sex come in ultimately for the whole blaine of the indiscretion or crime com- | mitted. Woman's inhumanity to woman, was more de- serving of the consideration of the great poet, than “man’s to man,” though I presume he included’ both mau and woman-kind in his category. Notwithstanding Mrs. Butler, the principal witness against the Bishop, is well known in Baltimore, and bas many warm friends here, they rather pity herthan defend her for her evi dence in the case. Tue Mankets.—The supply of beeves at market yes- terday, was considerably larger than that of the past week. The demand, though not quite so active, was Ritr, and sales to a moderate extent were made, but the prices obtained show a decline in the best quality. ‘The offer- ings at the scalesamounted to 774 head, of which 25 re- main unsold 164 head were driven to Philadelphia, and all of the balance, 685 head, were purchased by city butchers at $2 a 2,50 per 100 Ibs, on the hoof, equal to $3,50 a $4,76 nett There is very little inquiry for Howard street flour, and in every respect the market is in the same state which existed at the time of closing my last report. The ruling price is $4 50, at which rate sales of small parcels have been made from stores. The receipts continue light, and the stock on hand comparatively small. here was an active demand yesterday for Whiskey, | and nearly all the stock in market was taken at 23 cents. for hhds., and 24 cents for bbls. The market is now nearly or quite bare of the article. Mr.and Mrs. Kean made their first appearance last night at the Chesnut street, in the tragedy of the “Game- ster,” to a house crowded from pit to dome. I noticed thatthe array of beauty, fashion and intellect present, was such as has not graced a theatre for a long time past, and the miscellaneous audience crowded every door and passage, wherevera glimpse could be caught of the stage, or a whisper of the artistes’ voices heard, every inch of ground was occupied by an anxious and atten- tive auditory. Such a portraiture of character I never saw as those of Mr.and Mrs. Beverly. Although both were exquisite, yet all voices unite in giving the palm to the lady. Her personification was faultless ; it was the highest effort of art, and elicited spontaneous bursts of sympathetic app ause from everyheart and every ore in the house; but they were badly supported. Fredericks as Stukely, made a decided failure, and was hissed loudly. Morris, as Lew son, did himself credit, and was frequent- ly applauded. Mrs. McClain wes amuch better Char- Fredericks was a Stukely, though she ap- peared not to have sufficiently studied her part; but even had all the other actors been faultless in their parts, it would not have compensated forthe wretched, misera- ble abortion of such an important character in the play s Stukely. To night Mr. and Mrs. Kean perform in Shakspeare’s comedy of Much Ado about Nothing,” and I have not a doubt that the house will be as fuli as last night, with perhaps a larger number of people com- pelled to go away disappointed. At the close of the | performances last evening, they were called out by the audience, and while making their acknowledgements, a splendidjbouquet was thrown upon the stage, which Mr. | ean picked up and gracefully presented ‘to his lady, amid rounds of applause. ‘The Court of Quarter Sessions have been engaged all this morning in listening to efforts on the part of counsel | to postpone the trial of James K. Martin, charged with | ssault and battery upon a sheriff"s officer with intent to Martin, who is now under sentence for assault and | battery upon a man named Henry Zell, was brought up week to stand his trial before the Supreme Court, for a subsequent attempt to kill Zell by shootiag at him with a fowling piece. The trial was at that time post- ~poned, being sworn off on account of the absence of a material witness, and he was committed to the custody of a sheriff's officer, Alex. K. Young, to be returned to | prison. Young, instead of conveying him to prison, | yielded to neg erage and accompanied him up into | the Northern Liberties, among his friends, from tavern | to tavern, and on trying to get him down again after he thought he had wandered about long enough, he was violently resisfed. Martin kicked up several disturbances, and when another sheriff's officer | ed MeFate came to Young’s assistance, Martin ed him by the throa*, and came near choking him to death. With difficulty he was secured, and taken to pri- son; the next day the matter was made public; Young was discharged from his situation, andatrue bill for misdemeanor in office found against him; and a bill | against Martin for the assault upon McFate also found; and to-day he was brought up for trial. Ail the eiferts of his counsel for a postponemout were unavailing. A Jury was ordered to be empanelled, and the trial is now goin, 5 Before daylight this morning a carpenter shop and frame building occupied by blacks in the south western section of our city (Moyamensing) were set on fire by incendiaries, and Consumed. The honor of this achieve- ment, as also of anumber of others of a similar character, happening in the course of the year, is attributed to the rowdies Which infest our fire departinent. ‘The line from New York, due at 2 o’clock, has not yet arrived (five o'clock), and there is great excitement in consequence. We have another delightful day, and the trade of our city looks quite lively trom this cause among others. At the Stock board, however, transactions do not appear to have been extensive, though prices were well main- tained. Penn.
