Excitement about Mr. Gough—Extensive Pickpocketing— Missing Vessel Launch—A General Flare-up among the Methodists—Stock Board, Markets, §c. During yesterday there was quite an excitement amongst the temperance men as well as the anti-tempe- rance men, concerning the mysterious disappearance of John B. Gough. It was the subject of conversation and ridicule in every bar-room in the city, and was alluded | to by some of the temperance men at -their meetings in the afternoon. The general impression among all | cla , however, appears to be that it is another melan- choly instance of the weakness of human nature in re” | b; | dates leaned with anxiety against the tree boxes, and sisting temptation. On Friday night, aman named E, C. Davidson, of Ma- rion, Ohio, was robbed while at the theatre, he supposes, of a pocket-book, containing $7,000, consisting of four notes, each of $500, on the Mechanics’ Bank of this city; four of $100 each on the Chesapeake Bank; $2,700 in tes of $50 and $100 each ter County Bank of Pen: various banks in that vicinity. Mr. Davidson is adrover, and having disposed of a large drove of cattle, was on his way home. He did not miss his pocket-book until he returned home, when he found his pocket had been cut open and the book abstracted. No clue of the robbers has yet been discovered. Great fears are entertained here for the safety of the brig Henry P. Summer, Capt. Howland, who was last at Porto Cabello, bound for Baltimore. She has been out overtwo months, and no tidings have been received from her. Her officers and crew are nearly all Baltimoreans. On Saturday evening a fine brig called the Emma,” was launched from the ship yard of Messrs, Brown & Co. She is to be commanded by Capt. Staiford. The Rev.!. hreiber, pastor of the Catholic church of St. Vincent de Paul, is now lying at the point of death, from which there is no hope enie d of his recovery. He is the successor of the Rev. Mr. Gildea, who died about six months since. 3 Z The church blow up, which I mentioned some time since as in the course of fermentation at the Exeter street Methodist Episcopal Church, has finally broken out in print, The church is in charge of the Rey. Henry Sli- cer, formerly chaplain of the U. 8. House of Representa- tives, and gue of the most powerful ministers attached to thechurch. The anti-Slicer party have now come out with a pamphlet containing all sorts of ugly charges against their preacher end lis brother,in which they also saeiaicta @ severe castigation to Samuel Kirk and Samuel Merryman, two gentlemen who have been hith- erto regarded as the “pillars of the church.” ‘The cause given for the quarrel is a difference of opinion with re- spect to church government, but the real cause is Henry Clay and James K. Pot The Rev. Mr. Slicer, who is one of the most rabid uncompromising locofocos that the Empire Club could produce, refused to receive a dona- tion at a missionary meeting to make Henry Clay a life member. This give great offence, as well as the lan- guage with which he accompanied the refusal, and caused a smothered feeling of indignation and animosi- ty among the pious and brotherly-loving friends of “Old Harry.” This feeling vented itself on the first opportunity which soon after occurred on a difference of opinion with respect to the power to give the use of the church to a Rev. gentleman from [’ttsburgh, who desired to preach & sermon and take up a collection to raise funds to re- build aburnt church. The pamphlet alluded to isa reli- gious c y. being written in a spirit which may be Supposed to animate the breasts of the devil's arch-angels rather than Christ's “‘chesen few” on earth. Mr. Slicer, because nature has bestowed on him a “ carrotty poll” is called a“ salamander,” and charged with delivering in- flammatory and slanderous speeches and sermons.— The conseqnence of all this is, that the ‘Old Town Meeting House,” which used to be consi- dered the direct gate to Heaven has been turned almost into a bear garden, and is now attendad by not one-tenth part of its former congregation. This church has al- ways been consiered the hardest to govern in the whole city, its official sbrethren being not only plentitully sup- plied with ignorance, but as strongly imbued with a spirit of stubbornness as a team of mules, and it was with forebodings of the result which is now witnessed that the appointment of so self-willed tyrannical a man as Henry Slicer was regarded by those who had hitherto studied their individual characters. Srock Boary.—There was a brisk demand for Balti- more 6’s at the stock board on Saturday, and large sales were made at 102). Maryland 6's closed at 79}. Puivapenrnta, Sept. 12, 1845. The Democratic System of Nominations—2 Sunday at “Pascal's,” and a Monday at “ Holohan’s.” Any one who has ever had the happiness to converse with a whole-souled democret, has had a good chance to be informed that democracy is the spirit of purity--that the practices of the party are as pure as its principles— and that the whole system is @ beautuful piece of ma- chivery, regularly and elegantly prepared, so that in every working and movement is to be seen virtue, hon. esty, candor and love—that every wireworker is a saint, and every candidate an angel of light. If the incredu- lous hearer should be disposed to doubt the truth of this assertion, and should wish proof of this astounding fact, let him contemplate the delegate system in all its beauty —and where can it be more effectually displayed, than by an observation of matters and things at those great fountain heads of party influence, the democratic greg- shops? those republican establishments, where locofoco statesmen discuss whiggery and whiskey—banks and | brandy—glory and gin—repudiation and rum—where the staggering patriot, steadying himself agaiust the bar, will give you a dissertation on the stability ot his princi les—or whilst recling around in search of something to Fold on by, will gravely assure you that the whig party is tottering to its fall—or finally, whilst measuring his size onthe floor, and sprawling ont his limbs at full leagth, will comfort himself with a hiccuping assertion, that “ truth crushed to earth will rise again’”—and that the spirit of democracy will be spread to the four corn- ers of the earth. Here, in these moral lazar houses, are saaually formed those tickets which the delegates are allowed, afterwards, to confirm: and here are consum- mated those unholy bargains, and nefarious contracts, by | which, year after year, the rank and file of the party have been coerced, under the ban of excommunication, to support, for the most important offices of this country, | a never-ending series of bad and incompetent men, who, by political huckstering, have been placed on the ticket, and crammed down the throats of the whole community Let us go into these houses for “publi: accommodation,” and with an unprejudiced eye take observation of the ‘‘carryings on” And first we will take a look at Capt. Pascal’s tavern, Moyamensing, on the Sunday before the day of nomination. Now many weak minded people Would suppose that the Sabbath is a very improper day upon which to negotiate political bargains; but there are “no Sabbaths in revolutionary times;” and when the country is in danger,” which is always the case ubout election times, and until the alarmists are made its pro- tectors, by filling its offices. Such bigotted narrow mind. edness as‘a reverence for the Sabbath, should be frown ed down; and at any rate such distractions should not be noticed by a party, one of whose prominent leaders as- serted, some time since, that the native American party was composed of “black mouthed Presbyterians, and red mouthed Methodists.” Accordingly, trom time im- has been a good old demociatic usage here. about, to settle the ticketon the Sunday before nomina- tion, at Pascal’s; and thither, on that day, about three weeks since, went candidates to bore, and conferees to be bored—each party sallying forth’ with an axe to grind.” Upon reaching the lower boundaries of the city Proper, the scene becaine at once animated and striking. he pious citizen was amazed to see the long lines of ‘anxious looking pedestrians, all hurrying the same way, which blocked his path, whilst the ignorant pleasure secker, after having got himself out of the gutter into which he had been knocked, by a furious onslaught of some hard driven vehicle, which flew down the street at 4 thundering rate, in endeavoring to discover the neces- sity for such violent haste, was astonished to see that the conveyance which had done the mischief, contained two or more individuals, whose names he remembered to have seen inthe papers of the day before, as candidates for sundry public offices, having been induced to offer their es therefor, ‘at the solicitation of many and friends.” On reaching the tavern, the still livelier. Ah! here come the conferees in a body, the ballot is over sure enough, and now candidates and’ delegates adjourn to “Jem Brown’s” and i Jake Mayer's,” and negotiate and bargain for the settlement of the second ballot. Now, indeed, there is great anxiety. No one can tell what may be the result of the next vote, the iow- est candidate on the list may, perhaps, be the lucky no- minee, and accordingly a life and death struggle is going on between the borers for the vote of each delegate.,Bran- ty is poured outtreely, and the purses of the office- hunters, Which in the morning were stuffed with specie, begin to collapse and shrink in consequence of the great exertions of their owners for the success of the cause. He is aman of so peculiar a temperament that it was unsafe to have suffered him to be alone, even fora short time. The story. of the drugged soda water, only finds credence with a fe paliatives for his fall, the tale of a man in the full pos, session of his senses being unable to have detected a trick of that kind is rather too apochryphal for belief. We had quite a serious fire at South Boston this morn- ing between 1 and 2 o'clock. The white-lead works, and three blocks of double dwelling houses, were en- tirely consumed, and several other rouses in the yicini- | ty, more or less damaged.
