Ciry Intelligence Mvorery. ~Some foolish ne ridiculous affair, at a late hour on ht. for the purpose of hoaxing two or New Yorkers, whom they induced rouklyn, under the belief that the body of t Ir. Gough bad been found, murdered in Furman street, idway between the Fulton and South Ferries. Ltowt Waxtev.—The same parsimonious and narrow inded legislation which has been so much complained f in New York, in relation to the lighting of the streets, is acommon subject of complaint among the citizens of Brooklyn, whose highways and byways are often left in it das of persons who are at night. Itis a dis- municipal government, that, from mere con- rations of dollars and cents, people are left to grope their way through the public avenues, without any light to direct their steps from broken pavements, or to guard them trom the attacks of highwaymen and footpads, Doo Fiawtini in the B k advantage of peculiar art ar pros; g acondition, The police have, ho , Fe cently exercised a sort ef espionage over these individ- ‘uals, and yesterday officer John Van Duyre took into custody two ve y prominent offenders connected with this disreputable profession. It is jeaid that the body of Matthews, (another of tho unfortu- nates.) was recovered a day or two since, and buried without the re of a Coroner’s Inquisi- ion, If such parties inculpated in the a severe penalty, which the will undoubtedly enforce. Jenkins, sheriff lof King’s county, was defendant, was tried yesterday, involving the right and title to certain goods and chat- tels (chiefly silver ware) originally belonging to Mr. Young, and to which Mr. Newton Hayes, of New York, The Jury found a verdict m favor of the Justice Church, plainutt Potice IreMs.-Information was given that the store of Mr. Davis, corner of Hicks and Fulton streets, had been Durglariously entered (during the temporary absence of the clerk, who was deputed to sleep on the premises) and robbed of a considerable amount of money. The officers have got track of the thief. ‘Two or three persons, among them a woman named Mary Lise, were committed to jail for disorderly con- act. jovements of Travellers. _ The accession of traveliers, yesterday, continued un- dimimshed. The hotels have adopted every coutrivance that ingenuity could devise to accommodate the swarms of men‘icants upon their limi-ed resources, while the latter in a true spirit of humiliation, have yielded with a good humored submission to the theory, that if “necessi ty has no law,” she must at least be acknowledged ax “the mother of invention” ‘he following s a brief cat- alogue of sore of the sufferers. With the exception of some limited speculative movements in Beef, Pork, Sugar and Molas, ses, the southern markets have been very heavy andde depressed, and prices generally have ruled pretty low As some evidence of the great reduction in prices for most of the southern staph for Cotton in New Orleans on the it of each month: during the last year, compared with the three. years | previous. Quotations Fo Mippuine to Fain Cottox at New On LEANS. 1811-12. 1842-43. Cents. Cents. 6 a we annex the quotations 1843-44. ents. 1B14-45 Cents Prices ruled pretty high in January, March, 1844, in consequence of the fever for specula- tion at thattime in Great Britain, in connection with which the crop was about three hundred and and fifty thousand bales less than in the previous year. Most of the speculations were made, however, under the impres- sion that the crop would not exceed sixteen or cighteen hundred thousand bales, and when the extent of the yield became known, prices fell off from twenty to twen- ty-five percent. Since the market broke down in the summer of 184, prices have been very uniform, and there nas been @ complete absence of all speculation in the movements of the staple the past year. The trade | has therefore been an unusually healthy one, and most of those engaged have made a profitable yerr’s business of it. It is stated that there never was a ¢rop of cotton so completely cleared out of the southern markets as the lust. There is but a very moderate stock inany of the markets, and the supplies are so short in many places, {| that purchasers are compelled to wait for the arrivals of | the new crop to obtain good selections. Nothing can prevent excessive speculations n this staple, but a liberal | supply. An abundant crop acts as avery grent check | upon the movements of speculators, as it prevent: measure any very important monopoly. ‘There is, how- ever, so much capital in this country and in Europe seek- ing employment, that the first chance to get up any spec" | ulation in this article, will be made use of; but at present | wo see very little prospect of making any profitable ope* rations out of the regular course. The passage through (with a halt for a menl) of an increased lot of travellers, | however, gives something of life to the hotels, Camp meeting broke up to-day, four miles off. Rockwell and Stone’s citons igoa and the lug- he camp, were al mixed up together this morning on the Avenue. It was a queer scene. To-morrow, the old defenders of Balumore, 1814, pay usa visit. The Washington and Baltimore Railroad Company have reduced their fare to $1 50—a round dollar saved upon the charges of last winter. We are laid over to-day, hence the brevity. Bactisone, Sept. 12, 1845, Anniversary of the Battle of North Point—"Straw Bail” — The Whig Nominations—A Fracas, $c. To-day is the anniversary of the Battle of North Point, and as J write the drums are beating, cannons firing, and flags flying in every direction, with as much of a display of patriotic emotion as if it were the anniversary of “American Independence.” The ‘Surviving Defenders of Baltimore,” nu nbering about three hundred, are mov- | ing towards their place of meeting, with crape on their | arms in respect to the memory of the late President of their Association, and cockades on their hats, in anticipa- tion of a most pleasing reception at Washington, where they are to spend the day as the guests of the people, and of their “brethren in arms” now resident in that city. ‘The weather is most prepitious for their trip, and a day of honor and enjoyment awaits them. We have very few “‘straw bail” cases in this city, but they might as well be “straw,” considering the fact that the bonds given are never sued out in case of the escape of the prisoner. A case of this kind was tried yesterdxy, how: and most signally failed. A noted burgler, now awaiting trial, was yesterday brought out on e writ | of habeas corpus for the purpose of giving bail, and a per. | Son was presented, who stated that he was worth $1000 over and above his debts. Jacob Cook, of the firm of Zell, Ridgley & Cook being in court, requested to be called as a witness, when he testified that the man offer- ing bail had been, within a few ye an inmate of the Penitentiary, Jail, and Almshouse.
