There has been welight advance in quotations for most of the fancy stocks within the past week, and a very det cided incvesse in the extent of sales. ‘This improvement has been produced partly by the absence of unfavorable news from the south, and partly by the operations of a few heavy bulls, Some of the most extensive speculas tors hove, within the past few days, been operating for arise in several of the reilvoad stocks. Long Island has ‘aderthis cornering movement advanced since Tuesday jast nearl ‘This stock for the past monti: ha») eeu steadily decliniag, and has within that time fallen from 70 a 71 to 60 a 61 per cent. Parties that sold exten" sively at the highest range have teen buying freely at the lowest prices, ‘The large sales and purchases have caused the improvement. A broker from Boston, repre seuting several extensive operators in that market, has been in Wall «treet purchasing large lots of Long Island- ‘The decline in this stock commenced in Boston and the advance consmenced there. Prices having reached a point low enough to satisfy the most inveterate bear, and there boing a wide margin for an improvement, it is possible prices may during this week steadily advance. It is ut terly impc yssible to tell what course prices for any of the fancy stocks may take from day today. The receipt ofmore warlike news from the south; any change in the operati’ yns of thore speculating in any of the stocks, or any r€ gtrictions upon the money market more than al- ready experienced, will alter the complexion of the mar- ket and put down prices as low as they have ruled at any tir ge this season. At present, everything is in favor of {pose bearing prices. The probabilities of protracted difficulties with Mexico, in some shape, are sufficient to keep the stock market in a feverish state, and so long as our affairs with that country remain unsettled, there can be no permanent improvement in prices for stocks, whether Government, State, dividend paying, or fancy. We annex a table giving the quotations for stocks in this market for each day of the week just closed, also the closing prices for the week previous, Some of the fan, cies in the list have improved within the week several four per cent. per cent. BY LAST EVENING'S MAIL, Washington. (Correspondence of the Herald.) ‘Wasuineron, D. C., Aug. 29, 1845. Business of the Cabinet—Visitors—New York Cus- tom House Removals, §c. ; Visiting the great metropohs, I have been thrown by the fifth wave of society into divers nooks and crannies where, although I have not been blest with Alladin’s wonderful lamp, Lhave, notwithstanding, met with a little bird that has whispered some little matters in my ears. The Secretary of the Navy, Mr. Bancroft, 18 very busily employed at the present with minor and ma- jor details,—recommending Tennessee Editors to vacant purserships and filling up instructions to our Mexican squadron. Although but recently broke into the harness, he comes to the work like a four year old. His motto is ‘a place for everything and every thing in its place.” Mr. Marcy is putting the “regular army,” except Col. Webb, in their proper place,—heads ereet and right foot foremast. The only complaint against the Governor, is, that he is very tardy in his removals among his ten bureaus. I am sorry to say that the imput’tton is too well grounded, as he has scores of clerks who are anything but orthodox, and who, in- dependent of the rotation principle, ought to make room for as good men Ha more deserving, peliti- cally or officially considered. Mr. Buchunan has absolved himself from all con- sular matters, placing them in the President's hands, in order to give him more time for the arrangement of the Oregon and other important matters. So, you gentlemen applicants will please let Mr. B. alone, and prefer your petitions to his Excellency. Hisedy and foremost, you New York gentry have had all the consulates you will get, for you must re- member what Priestly said— |“ Westward, the star of Empire takes its way-” Aye, and the great West must be taken care of, | mind this, i The Postmaster General is up to his eyes in busi- ness and damning them very badly at that, too, be- cause Congress has forced such a rascally law upon the country as the new Post Office bill, which will bring the department some three million in arrears and break down all his personal and political popu- lacitys He still walks the Avenue as much as tor- merly, hut one eye can discover that he is ill at ease. Mr. Walker has Pay more business on his hands than all the rest of the secretaries put togeth- er,—too much indeed for any ordinary man, but then, be it remembered, Robert J. Walker is a man of no common order, and despatches business with the energy of intuitive knowledge. Constantly be- set with applications for office and the almost dail duties of cabinet meetings, he nevertheless crow with full sail through the whole and yet neglects not the important consideration of that engrossing sub- ject, the modification of the present tariff ; Ot the President and the Bureaux, I shall speak in next. The Hon. Branch T. Archer, of Texas, Henry J. Hart, formerly the great financier in Jersey City, Lombard and Hoboken Grazing Company opera- tions, as wellas Mr. B—ks, evel known in Mor- ris Canal and Harlem Railroad business, are here —each on the qui vive—the firstto regulate Texan ante and the others to affect certain desirable re- sults. The recent changes in your custom house, have been the topic of politicians, and much have been said as to the policy and impolicy thereof. Tyler- ism has got down nearly as low as U. S. Bank stock, and I should not wonder if it soon deserted she mar- ket. It appears that the Ist and 10th Wards, as well as Brooklyn, have come in for a goodly share of the spoils, and the hitherto favorite 8th has suffered some. The “Spy in Washington” has been spied out, and a Mr. Carrill or Cargill of Tennessee recollection has been placed in hischair. This seems all right, for Tennessee appears to have been almost totally overlooked by the Adminisiration ! er she have Justice done her, even though tardily. By the bye, what has become of the celebrated corps of espoin- age, once so potent in their operation, during Mr. Van Ness’s reign? They appear to have escaped the axe as yet. Do they feel secure m the insignifi- cancy of their characters, or shield themselves un- der the shadow of inaction?’ Wherever they may be, they are remembered, and the injuries they have visited ‘upon others may yet reach them. Cabinet meetings are very frequent, although I do not entertain any danger of Mexican irruption er war. ™ Wasuincton, August 30, 1845. We now s of Aaron Burr was a profitable job—whether it would not be a good idea for this ancient Hai Birch of the Whigs, te undertake the life of Armold, a traitor even more notorious than the slayer of Hamilton. If any man were competent to the task, we should think it would be the editor of the lite of Burr. An interesting and useful book might be made of the life of Arnold. i When noticing the other oy that Col. Eldridge, of Texas, was in the city, we should have also men- tioned the presence of Mr. Lee from the same sec- tion of the Union. They appear to be in Washing- ton as the government Wodt of Texas, for some purpose, perhaps connected with the consummation of Annexation ; for we observe that eget and letters received at the Post Office are addreased to ~The Texian Legation.” Mr. Eldridge will return Southward in a me or two, and he has promised to obtain a writer in Texas who shall adviee you of the state of affairs in that quarter. And now, from the perplexing procrastination in the protocol of war from Mexico—from the indications manifested that she will continue this policy of jugglery, postpoue- ment, and harrassing proclamations, and the more harrassing consequences to the interruption of our trade of the Gulf, and with Mexico herself, and from the non-payment of those indemnities, we should not be surprised at all, if our Administration were to be compelled to throw down the gauntlet of war, instead of the Government of Mexico The bom- bardment of Vera Cruz—the march of 10,000 regu- lars from that point to the city of the Montezumas, appears to us the only alternative that will be ulti- mately left in this issue, to the securing of these in- demnities, and the permanent pacification, and inci- pient civilizationof Mexico. A quasi guerrilla state of war between the two nations would be more ex- pensive and annoying to us and our commerce, than And if Mexico persists in the former system, the necessity of a de- Wiss | claration will devolve upon the United States, with the conungent necessities of the taking of Vera Cruz, and the city ot Mexico ; and the dictation of a treaty within the very walls of her national palace The expenses of ou: land and naval forces co-op- erating in the South, in anticipation of hostilities, will cost the government, merely in keeping them at their stations, in readiness for action, hundres | AT PINTEUX, CAFE DES MILLE COLO: of , if this dubious state of affairs between | LON, er caee Ooty} x Rete d 7 tion, or a declaration without EW engagement of two saperb Come Singers, Mr. and | war without a declaration, d atic | Mrs Wahine lee Cress aud Retreshments of the best | war, be continved till the meeting of Congremae Y vaya be had atthe bar, with the attendance of eare- : uggest to Fied can always be wi ventilated Billiard Room. coutining yout it not be well, there tore, to 8 mest to the eight tables, communicates with the Saloon on the same floor. resident, taut uniess Mexice hat there shall | "Entrance Free—Concert will commence at 7 0’elock. fore the re-assembling of Congress, that 26 be a declaration of war aguinst her, based upon the ? following grounds? t of the indemnities due the Phe Ship Captain.
