And here we are tempted to a little private gossip as we ge along. A couple of winters ago, Lieut. ******* was in- troduced into the family of Col. ****** in this city, and after a reasonable succession of visits it became apparent that he considered one of the Colone! k. Performexes to eom | daughters as more than an equivalent for all the fas- cinations of the wilderness. The old Colonel, you know, is a democrat in principle, and at the very on the subject of the annexation of Texas. Still, with all his notions of equality, and-so-forth, there 1s a natural tincture of the aristocratic in the social ideas of distinction peculiar to the best democrats. and not all peculiar to the Colonel. He discovere with the segacity of a politician, that the young ad- venturer from the mountains was “A No. 1” in the estimation of the young lady, whose judgment in the sequel has proved to be miro to that of pa. The discovery of the state of affairs between the two young people, was the signal for an explosion. That a portionless adventurer—a youngster whose family were not known among the magnates of the land~ “it will not do, sir ;—it will never answer, sir; such presumption, sir; will not answer, sir!” What next? As in ten thousand other cases, the Colonel forbade the yeung Lieutenant the house. The movement, of course, was perfectly absurd. And we now say to all old papas, that in case a young man entirely desirable, is dancing attendance upen one of their daughters, as if indifferent about winning or losing her, the very best mode to precip- itate a successful ratification of matrimony is to for- bid the young man the house. The ruse cannot fail of success. "The young Lieutenant was not to be defeated by such an ultimatum. Through the inter- position of friends a correspondence ensued ; and one night when there was a pleasant social reunion ata neighbor’s house, Miss — asked leave of pa and ma, who were present, to return home, for the pur- pose, perhaps, of re-arranging her toilet. Granted. Very good. Every thing having been arranged in pursuance of a plot, the faithful and noble girl was joined by Father ——, of the Catholic Church, at the hiotee of a friend, in the holy bonds of wedlock. Immediately after the service, she was escorted by the happy Lieutenant to the very door of the house where the party was going on, and there dismis- sed. She entered, participated, with renewed cheerfulness in the evening’s festivities, and was often complimented by her friends, and smiled upon by the unsuspecting “ old folks” in the outbursts of her Sprightliness and vivacity. About a month af- terwards—the secret was kept from the old folks a whole month, bless you—about a month afterwards pa found it all out—when he came home—stormed and “slatted round a spell,” as Jack Downing would say, and finally ordered the young bride to pack off and join her fortunes with her husband, who, like Jaffier, had— “*Stolen the old man’s daughter.” «She lett her father’s halls” most joyfully—she joined her husband, and they went into the matter- of-fact proceeding of taking a boarding heuse. After the lapse of a month or two the old man’s bowels yearned for the absent daughter, as did those ot Jacob ef old tor his son Joseph. He relented— the two young people were called home—forgiven—- soknowledged-apolended—and blest. And doubt- less the brave young oificer has often thought of the scene, and that dear little better-half of his in Wash- ington, when, wrapped in his blanket, he lay snooz- ing in his tent under the shadows of the Sierra Ne- veda. Col. ****** would not now take his weight in gold for his intrepid son-in-law; and if he (the Cofonel) only atones for his slip in the Texas annex. ation, as he Tas done for his absurd mistake respect- ing the annexation of his daughter, we could very readily excuse Mr. Senator Bagby and his compeere for taking those suppositious, constructive mileage moneys. This is our account of the “seven stars” and the “six stars.” And the reader may rest assured, tha t neither Father Ritchie nor Gen. Cameron are im- plicated in the foregoing narrative. « Now let us sing, long live W. R. King, And the Colonel, long live he, And when his next girl follows suit, May we be there to see.” Our old friend, George Washington Parke Custis, Esq., of Arlington, (his country seat across the river from this city) arrived from his Northern tour this harge | morning. Ashe loomed up the Avenue from the depot, in his capacious, flashy, peculiar, and gor- geous-striped coat, we intercepted him; and such a story as he told of the wonderful progress of the North, and the great cities of the North, indicated that,he has beenfa little astonished at what he saw He said he had a beard on brought all the way from Boston—had been absent four weeks, and that he must get shaved, go home, and see what was be- come of the place. Mr. Custis has politely invited us over to his residence ; and as he hasa lot of valuable relics of Washington’s honsehold, andof the revolution we expect to give an interesting ac- count of our proposed visit, next week. 56 Be not alarmed about the public printing. Either the Union, the Constitution, the U J some other press will get It, The the Constitution—a strong force fry irda Joule U.
