BY LAST EVENING’S MAIL, Washington. {Correspondence of the Herald.) Wasurnaton, Aug. 26, 1845. Notes of a Morning Ride into Maryland—First Di- vision—The Laurel Factory—Conversation with « Countryman—Singular Superstition that the Yan- kees always have Muney—Effects of Yankee En- lerprise, &e., &c. We have been to camp meeting away out in Ma- ryland. We feel renewed in the inner man, and considerably reinvigorated in the outer one. We are thankful. But we are going to tell all about our Lule excursion of yesterday. Left Washington at six o’clock, A. M., in the cars, with what they call a “round ticket,” good for twenty-four hours, stuck under our hat band. The late blasted and withered looking country of Mary- land had assumed since the late rains the freshness and greennessof Spring. It was a luxury to a man’s eyes accustomed only to the torrid heat and pulver- ized granite of Pennsylvania Avenue. The corn fields, the tobacco fields, the melon fields, the pas- ture lands, and the thick woods, wore a most luxu- riant and redundant thriftiness. And year by year the traveller can observe that Maryland is picking up—that laziness and whiskey drinking are yielding the wall to industry and Yankee enterprise. At about twenty miles from Washington, we left the carsat the ‘Laurel Switch” with a view of crossing by the Laurel Factory to the camp ground. After a walk of avery long mile, we came upon & village of sppayentiy ve or six hundred inhabitants. Its aac was total My distinct from that of the usual tumble-down, struggling, starveling, poverty stricken villagers of the South. lt was compact, and had all the air and comfort about it of an enterpri- sing settlement. The houses were of brick, clean, and commodious. The streets were clean—the in- habitants were clean—the whole aspect of the vil- lage and the fields around was clean. The universal Yankee was at the bottom of the secret. In the midst of the village there stood one of the largest cotton factories we have ever seen—four stories high, and longer than the Astor House. The bell wasringing in the cupola as we passed along, and as if by magic trom every direction, groups of young women and boys, came flocking to the gregt entrance. Theywere coming from breakfast to resume their work at the spindles and the looms. In addition to boys and men, they employ about three hundred girls in that factory. Besides this, there are several facto- ries of machinery in the village—one of cotton ma- chinery, all of them employing together about four voexctses will be received for non- c hundred men. And all this comes of an enterpri- sing Yankee named Capen, who established the Laurel factory some dozen years ago. After passing the village we met an antaligent countryman going in with a basket of eggs and a handful of chickens, and the following conversation ensued between us. “Going to market, I suppose, sir ?” “Yes, sir, Reina to the Laurel. We get as prices for our truck at the Laurel,as we doin Wash- ington, and its ollers the cash down. Them fellers at the factory never say credit; and you can’t bring ’em too much truck.” : “And you always get good prices ?” » “Ollers! They pay you mght down on the nail. It’s helped this country a heap, | tell you. They ol- lers have money, somehow, the Yankees do. hy, sir, ten years ago this country was starving to death. All that could rake and scrape enough to go out to the West, were packing up and moving off. But since that factory’s been put up, there isno more moving. We eres money now any time. Why, woman, and her little boys, that made a hundred dollars this summer, a sellin’ black- berries and huckleberries at the Laurel. And they ollers pay you the money down. Them fellers is ollers got money. Wheat and corn, sweet potatoes, chickens, bacon, eggs, potatoes, milk, cheese, but- ter, why, they buy everything, and are glad to see ou, and they pay you the money down—they ollers ave the money at the factory. I’m jist as sure of the money for my truck that I get, as if I had it in my pocket. They ollers have money, them fellers 0.” “Tam glad to hear so good astory of the Yankees, ing during the | my friend. Is there not another factory in the neigh- borhood 7” : “Yes, sir; the Laurel is the big prong of the Pa- tuxent, and a mile lower down, they are Ve up ancther big factory of the same sort. Them Yan- kees ollers have money somehow. They are a great help to a country, any how; you can’t stop em from going ahead. ‘They ollers have money, and they pay you right down on the nail; and if you don’t like paper money, they’ll give you the silver. They ollers have both kinds.” “Good—very good. But is there not another fac- TO AMERICAN DRAMATISTS. ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS Will be paid foran. Second Section—The Camp Meeting Described—Its Proceedings of the Day—With some Appropriate Reflections on Camp Meetings Generally. The Camp Meeting of which we are about to treat, now in full blast, in Anne Arundel county, Maryland, about midway between Washington and Baltimore, is rather a small affair. About a dozen tents dis- persed in the form of an irregular circle, some two cr three dozen wagons, and a cordon around the tents of horses, mules, and milch cows with bells on, together with a motley congregation of several hun- dred persons, made up the encampment. It was gotten up by the Protestant Methodists of the neigh- borhood, Baltimore and Washington. It was about nine o’clock when we entered the circle, and the first thing that attracted our attention, was a group of men and women in one of the tents, some sitting, some standing, and all vibrating to the music, singing— “Arise, my soul, arise, si off thy guilty fears, The bleeding sacrifice, In thy behalf appears,” &c. Other Frours of young women were walking around the enclosure—others sitting about within the tents—others upon the benches within the area, discussing the fashions; while outside the circle, at the hack ot the tents, the old mammas, and their negro servants, were busily engaged washing up the breakfast things,or paring the potatoeg, cleaning the chickens, and fixing things in readiness for cooki dinner. Suddenly our ears were assailed by a sount like that which indicates the departure of a stage- coach from a country post-office, and, looking round, we espied in the preachers’ stand a short man in a straw hat, witha a tin-horn, about fourteen feet in length, to his mouth, leaning back and blowing for Jerusalem. The congregation assembled for prayer-meeting. Few men were present at this Visit Hoboken after dinuer, 1 most splendid promenede and | Our, 80 your correspondent had the honor of the hovel amusement company of several le pied 2 daughters of Eve all around him. And from the manner in which they turned their little heads and smiled, it was evident they considered us either a moat excellent good singer, or a very handsome and genteel young man. ‘the brethren in the altar, a sort of pen, at- tached to the preachers’ stand, about twenty feet by ten, with a carpeting of clean straw for the mourn- ers, struck op— “ Glory, hallelu Praise hi Glory halleluyer lory .halleluyer ! Grace. is free. Then one of the brethren prayed. His appeal was for more grace—more power—more fire of the Holy Ghost—more showers of the Divine Spirit—a re- newal in the inner man—a breaking of those hearts of stone—a conviction of sinners by the arrows of the Word, dipped in the blood of Christ—a conver- sion of mourners, &e. &e. Then the congregation un; Soins; thou fount of every blessing Tune my heart to sing thy prait Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. —Halleluyer to the Lamb, Who has purchased our pardon, And we'll praise him again, When we pass over ” And so, alternately in singing and prayer, the meeting was protracted till nearly eleven o’clock, when the mourner—there was only one at that time —a number of others having got through, was a pale youre. lady in mourning. At eleven o’clock, the long tin trumpet was again sounded by the man in the straw hat, when quite a respectable congrega- tion, from constantly arriving reinforcements, was Cron assembled. Brother Murray preached a ser- mon on the subject of grace, after which the sacra- ment of the Lord’s Supper was administered. The meeting was then dismissed, and the congregation dispersed to dinner. While watching the various detachments defiling into the tents, a tall elderly brother accosted us: ‘* You seem to be a stranger here, sir.” “Yes, sir.” “ Well, sir, we have a for | basket of provisions—it you Will come and share with ug, youare quite welcome to such as we have.” eal ies scored the invitation of this practical christian, and had the enjoyment, in the woods, of @ good dinner, with an interesting and 4ntelligent fa-
