Wield “that Beraeerice'ty get ardent Wels to ep ne pape gs ay getty at hands, for the Commercial Times, after it shall ap: pear, more than ordinary attention ; for its commer- cial , Lewis r, who is now in your city collecting type, &c., for its organization, is a gentle- man of rare commercial talents and education, and would soon acquire and maintain an enviable repu- tation in your city or Liverpool. Besides, there 18 now in the course of erection, a little above the said Merchants’ Exchange, immediately fronting Lafay- ette are, a Municipal Hall, which, if not equal to your City Hall, will greatly eclipse, in beauty, any other in thecountry. You will naturally say to your- self, it not aloud, we area most ente! ig set of pcea, » in the way of city adornments tcl h is not the faci these things are forced, as it were, upon us by one man, than whom this or no other city in the world—although that is a large word— can boast of more than his equal. His name is Samuel. Peters. He not only projects but, in all cases, he munificently subscribes himself, being a man of fortune. You will again naturally say to yourself, or aloud, what an idol Mr. Peters must be with the people. Such isalso varient from the fact. Unlike any other people, probably, on earth, their love of talents, virtue, and invariably useful enter- prise, is completely absorbed in their jealousy of his superiority—a superiority as unostentatious, and as assiduously concealed, as was that of our Marshal. His usefulness in such a city as yours, where the ele- ments of society are comparatively so different, be- cause, with all its numerous casts, so much more ho- mogenious—would be adequately appreciated ; but when we seem to desire, as far as 1n us lies, to imi- tate the Kilkenny cats—to eat one another up when we have nothing else to eat, morally speaking—he is more often reviled than praised ; and when prais- ed, with few exceptions, done so in manner to elicit the disgust of his friends. The public education of this city is now prosecuted on a scale commensurate with its remotest wants; and its system on a foot- ing. Be munificent and judicious asthe most approved lights have dictated. “He is the father of this sys- tem, and it remains to thousands, now ‘icipating in its benefits, and to millions unborn who are to do #0, to do him that juanen which their ancestors 80 pusillanimously withhoid. In short, he is the head and front of every useful improvement which has taken place since the population numbered 30,000. _ Our part of the political world is so quiet, that it hardly merits a comment, although the two candi- dates for the Gubernatorial Chair, in January next, Du Buys, Whig, and Johnson, Democrat, are now At work canvassing the upper parishes. They are both so personally popular, that, strange to say, they create no party excitement, and their Tespective par- ties seem teevaes to permit the result to turn on that ivot. The State is so thoroughly Annexation, and Du Buys so thoroughly anti ditto, that I apprehend Johnson will be elected. We have no Whig party here now worth speaking of. They have as many hues asthe rainbow. Very many of its most distin- guished leaders, are in doubt whether the land marks of the Democrats are not the true roads, after all, to that bourne from whence no na tion will ever retarn without the robes of that greatness incidental to the perfection of politicel wisdom and exhausted resources. They reason thus, The tariff reduced to the revenue standard ; the distribution of the proceeds of the public lands amongst the States; and the annexation, or re-an- nexation, if you will, of the whole continent of Ame- rica to the United States, are experiments not yet tried ; and who knows," if properly tested, that fey are not the very things we want? They seem ‘o be satisfied;that, out of the rulns of the U. States Bank, has been reared a temple of paramount pros- perity, which they Cp a impossible; and wh, may not similar temples be wrought out of those o} rotection, government land offices, and present oundary fines? These are their doubts and rea- sonings, and they are not peculiar to our Whigs, which is fully exemplified in the recent elections in Alabama. Our Tyler Collector of the Customs, Tom Barrett, still holds on, and will, no doubt, enjoy his office, as Isaid in my preceding letter, until after our January elections, “Seth Barton, the Solicitor of the Trea- sury of the United States, formerly a citizen of this city, has recently been here, and reviewed the whole Repooratic 5 ound. He plainly saw that it ‘ould not do for Mr. Polk to disturb the harmony of the party at this juncture, or until after the Jan- uary elections ; seeing, as he did, the cohesiveness of the Irish ; and knowing, as he ascertained, their unalterable love for their fellow-countryman, the Collector. Barrett boldly contends that he is as good a democrat as the Baltimore Convention—or any other convention—ever manufactured; and the frish, to a mau, believe every syllable of it. Be- sides the nutural cohesiveness ot the Irish in this quarter, and their implicit belief in the democracy of our Collector, he has the honor of being the Con- sul of his Holiness, the Pope of Rome. “After the January elections, however, he will have te walk, not that Mr. Poli loves his democracy, friends, des- cent and holy commission less, but that he loves his two niece’s husbands, Barnett and Picket—the sons- in-law of Gen. Walker—more. Will you believe it, when Tassure you, which I do, that every democrat J © ever seen in this State is an office seeker, or would have an office it he thought he could get it? vis the inanta for it, that nightly meetings are held to devise ways and means to induce the Presi- dent to dub them public servants. What a commen- tiry surely onthe morals of the Lan Mir falling generation of this part of the sunny South, where, orth of Mason’s and Dixon’s line, itis only thought necessary to come, stick up a shingle, and make a rapid fgytune. Your Yankees become too. intolera- bly lazPafter they have been here some time, that many of them refuse to chew bread after it is put into their mouths, and hence their love of democra- cy and government pap. e By the bye, great efforts are now being made to establish a magnetic telegraph between this city and Mobile, and the wire hasbeen arranged, I learn, to some considerable extent. After the return of Mr. Peters from the north, I have no doubt the enter- prise willbe successful, antil when, I apprehend very little further will be accomplished. iS Don’t you think that the letters sf NP. Willis, of which the Mirror speaks so much, and is anxious that every other paper will do the same, which, if they would see it—tirst, ure stupid affairs, and are un- worthy the perusal of any but half: witted chamber- maids. How Willis manages to so successfully hurnbag such an enlightened public as yours, even we out here, can’t conceive for the life of us suppose you are all afraid to pain him in his true. literary character until after. the interpretation of your law of libel shall dovetail into the greater the truth the most absurd and untenable the suit. Being the rst pickings, itis all fair, fully tair, and g fair, Our stock, including all on shipboard, not cleared, is about 2000 bales.— The weather has been most propitious throughout this State for a large crop, and trom Mississippi and Tennessee we have heard nothing to lead to fears ef a diminished anticipated production, In Alaba- ma sad complaints are extensively made about the drought, and the. eee is general that no more than @ halt crop willbe made. There will be cotton enough made in all conscience, notwith- standing. Our stock of sugar is reduced to about 3000 hogsheads, and is gradually leaving us for Western and Northern markets, at advanced prices. What your fire consumed was a God-send to the small-fry speculators here, who are, in consequence now enabled to realize 6 and7 cents for their impru- dent speculations late in the season, which will about bring them out whole. There is no doubt that our growing crop will be an overwhelming one, amply sutficient, without undue speculation, to keep down prices within the pale of wholesome ex- change.
