Rucy and Nice Little Chapter. The work of rotation, or of proscription, aceord- ing to whig lexicographers, now in full and inexo- rable operation, (saving the old auditors,) is turning loose upon the community a body of men, who will doubtless fight like Trojans for the Whig ticket in 1348. There are some very judicious removals, and some very hard ones-~and there are also some try- ing disappointments. We could name a number of cases of good men and true, held in abeyance for several months, who have been finally non-suited by the appointment of other names to the offices they had in anticipation. Some of these applicants have been on expense here, at the hotels, since March last; and thus to lose their time, their pros- pects, and their loose cash, is next to the shower bath of an unexpected turn out from a $1200 clerk- ship. We have told you, or rather Father Ritchie has, in glowing praises, of Mr. Cave Johnson’s magnifi- cent Philadelphia carriage. We now learn that the Secretary of State has ordered one from the same place, of the same sort. If this be so, we shouldn’t wonder to see the example tollowed. by Mr. Ban- croft, Mr. Mason, and even by Mr. Marcy. It will be good for trade to follow up this business, but not altogether appropriate to the simplicity eracy. The example of the President, in the and ostentatious furnishing of the hite House, is rather the fect tae which should be followed. We could’nt ride comfortabl in a carriage which had cost us a round th while the body of the democracy are trudging in the hot sunshine on foot. We go for the example of republican simplicity, and unsophisticated homespun. i We are pained to learn that the interesting, youth- ful and accomplished daughter of the Major General is lying seriously afflicted with a pulmonary affec- tion, at the Georgetown Convent, whither she has fled as a refuge from the strifes and follies of the world. Southwark has been restored to quiet, though a very lenge a cri- bad spirit is afloat. The native authorities, who produced all thi isorder, are boasting, through their organs, of having, with the assistance of the Sheriff's posse, and with the countenance of the police of the adjoining dis- tricts, ‘succeeded in partially quelling the disorderly propensities of a few members of a solitary fire company, They don't mention that in so doing they were silly enough to strike at the orderly portion of their fire de- partment. The perpetra- tors escaped to make another attempt upon more a opportunity. Excellent police of Southwark ! Most effi- cient guardians of property and terror to evil-doers !
