Letters for the Squadron will be sent, as usual, to his place, whence a communication will be main- uined with the Squadron, while at Vera Cruz. An incident occurred here on board the Saratoga t Saturday, which I will state thus :—A athe sized ta was captured by a hook and line, and when led on board and opened, a man’s head entire, xcept the under jaw, was taken from his stomach. The money was counted and amount- ec we understand to $3,162, in sovereigns. The reductions in duties upon imports, will probably be felt less a year hence, than at present. The increased consumption of sugar, and other articles, on which the duties have been reduced, will prevent any great deficiency in the revenue from customs, The income from the property tax is steadily increasing. It will be observed that in the returns for the quarter last year, there was an item of £184,000, being the value of silver received from China, and no returns are made of receipts from this source this year. ‘The semi-annual statement of the importation and con- sumption of cotton in Great Britain, shows an increase in the receipts of American cotton, and a decrease in the re- ceipts of other descriptions. The receipts of other descriptions this season have been 21,442 less than the last. The stock on hand on the Ist of July was equal to forty and three-fourths weeks consumption. The large supply in the face of a large crop about ready for picking in this country, must have a very unfavorable effect upon prices, and cause a farther depression. Prices are lower than tzey have ever been before, lower than can well be afforded by the pro- ducer. We see nothing at present likely to exert a favor- able effect upon prices, and unless some change take place in the course of this trade, the planters must be heavy loses. The large stock on hand, at the opening of a new season, has a more unfavorable effect upon the producers, than the possession of large stocks later in the season, as then the loss falls principally upon the specu” lators. |, 2th June, Old Stock Exchange. $2900 NY State 5’s, 60 100%4 170 shas Nor & Wor RR 70 2000 Ohio 6s, “60 96. do 849 70 800 lo 95% 50 do b60 7044 20000 Peun’a S's 75%4 200 do 70 5000 do 86075 200 do bam 71 10000 590 Wilmington 330 29 25 shas 100 L Island RR 6s 100 Farmers?
