and back. ‘The advantages railroads in other parts of the country possess over canals are verry great, but nothing compared to the advantages the Reading Railroad pos- es over the Schuylkill Canal, in consequence of the elevation of the mining districts above tide water. Ca nals, under the most favorable circumstances, cannot | compete with railroads. This fact has been settled be, yond a doubt, in this country and in Great Britain. Where suflicient freight offers to give full employment to all the steam power any railroad company can bring into Operation, no canal can successfully compete with then, ‘The increased quantity of merchandise a locomotive can take over a road, and the expedition with which an im- mense load can be transported, prevents the operations of any canal company from doing them any injury. The construction of the Reading Railroad, to come into com petition with a very powerful canal company, required a vast deal of energy, and the firmest belief in its ultimate success. At that time the Schuylkill canal, was one of the most profitable works in the country, and the idea of building a railroad to com- pete with it, was then considered almost madness. ‘The | Reading Railroad was chartered in 1833, and its con- struction commenced in 1835. Soon after, in 1836 and 7, this road, with a great many similar enterprises, was overtaken by the commercial crisis, which swept over the whole face of the country, and its completion was for a time much retarded. The company were forced to make heavy loans, and to submit to many sacrifices ; but in 19424 single track was finished from Philadelphia to || Reading, upon which, that year, nearly fifty thousand || tons of coal were sent to murket. In 1843, this quantity ‘Was increased to 230,387 tons, Since that time, a double |) track the whole length has been completed, at an ex- pense of one and @ half millions of dollars, In 1844, the || quantity of coal transported amounted to 441,491 tons, |and it is estimated that about double that quantity will | be delivered at Port Richmond this year. There is a pos- | sibility that, with sufficient outlay and with a supply o¢ | |coal to justify it, atrain might be started every hour.— ‘These would, in twenty-four hours, carry 12,000 tons, or | 3,756,000 tons in a year of 315 days. It will be some time | before this quantity of coal per annum will be required | but the facilities of the company will soon be made suf’ ficient to transport that amount. The cost of transporting aton of coal on this road, is | estimated this year to be between thirty-five and thirty | eight cents perton. The company charge anaverage price || for transportation of $1 05 per ton, which it is stated can be raised to $1 50 per ton, and still compete successfully with the canal, The business of the road of 1844, com pared with 1843, shows the following increase, viz: On | the transportation of coal ninety-one per cent; passen, || gers nineteen per cent, and on merchandise twelve per /cent. Weannex a list of the branch roads in the coal region, acting as feeders to the main track, embracing those at present in operation, as well as those in contem” platien, giving the length, with the quantity of coal transported by each for the present year:— | Ratnoaps Brancuixe From tHe Reapina Rosp. | al és . These statements will give some idea of the immense resources and wealth of this com- Pany, and the favorable prospect its stockholders have | of the work being of great value, and ultimately paying large dividends. | ‘The only opposition to this road is the Schuylkill ca- | nal, the business on which has declined every year since the railroad began tocarry coal, in 1842, The company have ceased for some time (o declare dividends. It is now proposed to renew the competition by an enlarge- ment, to admit steam propellers of 200 tons to pass, which it is estimated can be done at a cost of one and 9 half mil- lions. Every one of the 109 locks will require altering, dams will have to be raised, the canal deepened and widened, and while this work was going on, the railroad would have the entire coal business to itself, for a period ofat least two orthree years. Canal improvements aro limited, while railroads are yet in their infancy, and must continue to improve every year fora long period to @ome. A railrsad of the present day that can compete successfully with » canol, will still further advance be, yond it every year. [Correspondence of the Herald.) Wasuinaton, July 23, 1846. “The Renegade Politician”— Who is the Man!—The late order of the Secretary of the Treasury—Peter Hagner and Stephen Pleasanton—Case of Dr. Miller—The President and our Consuls—Mr. King’s Opinion—Character of Mr. Walsh, Con sul at Tunis—Ben. E. Green, Brantz Mayer, and Senor Atocha—The Mexican Instalments— Hammett, of Miss.,in a fiz—The duty on Green Turtles, §c. Who isthe man? Who is that exterminated in- dividual denounced by Gen. Jackson in his letter of April 8th, to Major Lewis, as “a renegade politi- cian,” and as sucha dubious customer, that “when the money is wanted, it will not be fortheoming.”— Father Ritchie says that these seven ominous stars, thus: *******, do not mean me. “Thou cannst not | shake thy gory locks at me, and say I did it” It is some other well known democrat, who lives north of the Surquehannah, Can it be Croswell, spelt with one /? Some person north of the Susquehanna! Saw his name in another letter. Why, who can it be 7 But is there any doubt about the Major, who, in Tennessee, according to the old hero’s testimony, | is “considered us broke ?” Is not Mr. Heiss a ma- jor, a bona fide, clever, good major, too? And does notthe singular association of the Major and the correspondence of those unlucky asterisks with the letters in Father Ritchie’s name, all taken together, make a circumstantial case, which, without the proof to the contrary in black and white, justifies the impression that Father Ritchie is the unfortu- uate man set down asa “renegade politician.” We can respect Father Ritchie’s delicacy in withhold- ing the name of the gentleman north of the Susque- rena but if he would save himself, he should out with it. The revenge of Major Lewis is an inglorious re- venge; but the circumstances, from his own testi- mony, attending his expulsion, give to his case a very strong palliation. Had the President simply assumed the responsibility in his ejection, on the ground of “‘rotation,” all this difficulty might have een avoided. The Major would have had no excuse tor the course he has taken. But as the develop- ments are made, and as the editor of the Union is plausibly criminated, the law of self-preservation justifies him, nay, requires him to give the name of the “renegade “politician” north of the Susquehan- nah, indicated by those seven starg. It will have to be done. The late order of the Secretary of the Treasury, directing the several heads of Bureaus in his de- partment, to report the names, time of their first ap- pointment, and salaries of all the clerks in their sev- eral offices, has created no little stir among the small fry. The big fish, too, have occasion to flut- ter and flounder “some,” as we shall presently show from an example or two. The records, in many , have been “burnt up,” and the time of their original appointment cannot, in consequence, be as- certained. The memory of the “oldest inhabitants” has been appealed to in vain. All that is known, for instance, of Peter Hagner, third, and of Stephen Pleasantsen, fifth Auditor, is that in the bill of con- tingent expenses for the removal of the seat of gov- ernment from Philadelphia to Washington, in Ii there was paid for the transfer of Peter Hagner and. family, $558 56. How long he had been in office before this, no man, it is thought, can tell. He may have been a page to the old Continental Congress, for all that we know. Since the year of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, 1800, he has received the following “pap” from the Treasury, as taken from the most authentic sources :— Salary as Chief Clerk, as accountant, War Department for fifteen years, +++ $27,600 00 Additional accountant one year,. + 1,000 00 Third Auditor, twenty eight years, ~ 84,000 00 Expenses of removal from Philadelphia,.. . 568 56 Sum total of “ pap” to the Apostle Peter, $113,158 56 One hundred and thirteen thousand, one hundred and fifcy-eight, fifty-six. Money enough to build three large steamboats. Why, the annual interest of this money at 6 per cent, exceeds the salary of the Secretary of the Treasury; and if Mr. Hagner is not rich, and in a condition to retire comfortably trom business, it is his own fault—“ for a man that will not take care of his own household is worse than an infidel,” and a man that is worse than an infidel ought not f hold office—is not fit for office under our Christian and democratic admunistra- non. But how stands the account of Uncle Sam with Mr. Pleasanton? Letus see. Let us set down the figures und take the aggregate. Salary as Chief Clerk of the State Depart- ment for sixteen years,......... $24,000 00 Fifth Auditor for twenty-eight years, 84,000 00 Paid for removing him (with other chattels of the Government,) from Philadelphia in 1800, seteee wate eeee 109 57 Sum total of “ pap” to Stephen,...... $108,109 57 One hundred and eight thousand, one hundred and nine, fifty seven! Five thousand dollars only behind Mr, Hagner. How delighttul to contemplate these delicious droppings from the big honey comb of the Treasury. For forty-five years these old gentlemen have been living, like the ancient Canaanites, in a land flowing with milk and honey and money.— What a glorious Government has ours been to them; nothing like it on the face of the earth! One hun- dred and thirteen thousand, and one hundred and nine thousand! How happy could I er Father Ritchie be with either! No wonder these old gen- tlemen have kept their health so well, and have lived so long without any prospect of dying at all. What’s the use of men dying when they are doing so wel}? But will not these nice aggregates make some of our rotatory demograts open their eyes “ about a feet,” in the popular ‘Phrase of the day? And will they not “raise a row” when told, as we have the honor to tell them, that these two friends, Orestes and Pylades, Damon and Pythias, good whigs though they be, are to be retained as indis- pensable to the administration? Unless the unterri- tied democracy come A the rescne, they will finu it out in due season. es not Mr. Marcy say that no democrat could be found equal to the task of du- ty attached to Mr. Hagner? Does not Mr. Cave Johnson say his services must not be dispensed with? And as he is a Pennsylvanian, does not Mr. Buchanan protest that you must not touch the Key- stone? And did not that amiable and exemplary lady, a near rela:ive of Mr. Secretary Walker, go to the same school with Peter when Peter was an inte- resting litle shaver? And when Peter went out with the bays on a foraging expedition, did he not always bring home to the prettiest little girl in the school the best of apples and peaches? All these considerations make the removal of Mr. Hagner a very difficult undertaking, unquestionably. Besides, Mr. Hagner is a faithful officer, an experienced officer, and knows the line of his duty by rote. He has contrived, too, thus far, to keep in with all parties, and his re- lations generally are in office. It would be like breaking up the family te turn him out. In some parts of Pennsylvania, all over the State, indeed, you will frequently find an old patriarch on a small jarm, with his sons and daughters, and kindred, on the adjoining lands all around him. And this de- sirable state of things is almost invariably the result of the old man’s exertions in early life. So with Mr. Hagner, and his relatives in the public employ. it would be cruel, therefore, to break up his com- fortable and harmonious arrangement, the result of fifty years’ devotion to his country. And yet we go for dismissing the old gentleman honorably, and immediately. If there can be no other democrat found equal to the plain sailing of his office, we will undertake the duties of the third auditor upon six easy lessons from the present incumbent. As to Mr. Pleasanton, does not Mr. Buchanan, the best looking bachelor, and the most worthy ba- chielor, ot tis ace, an honor to the whole fratern ity, dan honor to the land, does not he say that the fifth auditor ‘has sueh an interesting family that it would be cruelty in the extreme to disturb their comfort by the deposition of Mr. P. To be sure he does. But what do they say of Mr. Pleasanton? ‘That he used to visit John Tyler im the broad light, and Henry Clay after the moon went down, because neither by daylight— Nor the light of the moon, Did_he wish to be seen with that same old coon. And did not “Harry of the West” greet him with «hearty shake of the hand, and say—* Come and see me—come in the day time, Pleasanton, I'll not tell on you.” Of course, when it was ascertained that Polk was elected, the fifth auditor rejoiced with exceeding great joy, and illuminated on the night of the inauguration, as he had a perfect right to do, as clear and unquestionable as our title to the Oregon. But what of all this ; if the Secretary of State says the fifth auditor is safe, who dare ven- ture to ptotest? Still, we think, in carrying out the rule of rotation, Mr. Pleasanton ought to go, espe- cially when we take into consideration the forty- five years, and the round sum of one hundred and nine thousand. : . (| A Miller, Soe peace P. ar ea ihe pices sly, open a full and temperate, and not over hasty Teliberation, be removed. The President, we un- | derstand, declares that he made no pledge to Capt. ‘Tyler to retain the Doctor, nor in considerin | claims of the Captain to his consideration, will he Ohio democracy to the contrary.
