JONEY MARKE! Wednesday, July 16—6 P. M. The extreme heat of the weather still has an unfavora- ble effect upon stoek operations, and prices continue much depressed. The transactions were only to a limited ex- tent, and the ma:ket is unusually heavy. ‘The Comptroller has given notice that the interest on the public stocks and loans of the City of New York, due and payable on the Ist of August, will be paid on that day by the Chamberlain of the city, at his office, in the Bank of the State of New York. A semi-annual dividend of four dollars per share has been declared by the Utica and Schenectady Railroad company, payable on the Ist of August next. Stockhold- ers whose stock is registered in the city of New York will apply for their dividends at the office for the registry and transter of the Company’s stock, at the Phenix Bank of said city; and stockholders whose stock is registered in the city of Albany will apply for their dividends at the Albany City Bank in that city. ‘The semi-annual interest om the bonds of the Erie Railroad Company—due on the Ist inst.—will be paid at the office of the Treasurer. The receipts of specie at New Or- leans this season have been small compared with last. From September Ist, 1843, to July Sth, 1844, the importa- tion of specie ixto New Orleans amounted to $7,670,703; while the receipts from September Ist, 1844, to July 6th, 1845, have been only $2,196,718; showing a decrease of $5,473,985, The specie in the banks on the 28th of June: 1845, was $1,954,585 less than at the same season last year. The banks have retained possession of the pre- cious metals very well in the face of the decline in the receipts. The currency of that section is, however very near a specie standard, and the amount of specie in circulation throughout the valley of the Mississippi is very large. The falling offin the import of specie this Season compared with last, does not show any derange™ meut of the currency, but on the contrary a greater uni- formity in the value. In speculative times specie is shipped in large amounts to New Orleans for the pur- chase of the principal staple products, which seek a mar- ket in that port. In expending this specie by purchasing these products, it becomes circulated throughout the western country, and finds its way into the hands of the merchants of that section, and eventually into the vaults of the banks of Wall street, where it remains until some speculative movement arises requiring a shipment to the southern ports. The cause of the decline in the receipts of specie at New Orleans this season can, therefore, be attributed entirely to the absence of every species of speculation ; the fact of there being a decline, is no evi- dence that the currency of that section is depreciating in value, as we havo no evidence that the west experien. ced any drain of precious metals to supply the eastern demand. The circulation of the banks of New Orleans has within the past year increased. According to the report for June, 1845, the amount of issues was $1,153,998 greater than in the same month last year. This increase in circulation, in connection with the diminished amount of specie on hand, shows that the currency has become slightly depreciated, but not to an extent sufticient io affect prices or to produce any derangement of trade The business season of New Orleans has about closed, and the receipts of produce have become reduced to a small amount. The receipts of cotton are nearly over, and the stock on hand is smaller than for the same time within the past ton years. We annex a table giving the amount received, exported, and on hand, up to the sth Sast. for each year of the past ten :— Annivars, Exronts ano Srocks er Corrox at New On- LEANS, FROM SEPT. Amount’: d Stock on hand and on ship-board, bales - This staple has gone forward very rapidly this year, and there has been a very peculiar feature in the ship- ments from New Orleans. The exports have exceeded the receipts several ¥thousand bales, a circumstance never before experienced in the cotton trade of that port, The receipts of cotton at New Orleans in 1942—43, were much greater in proportion to the crop, than they have been this year. The crop now coming in will not hard ly reach twenty four hundred thousand bales, but will be nearly twenty thousand bales more than the great crop of 184243, notwithstanding which, the receipts at New Orleans are now more than one hundred thousand less than they were that season, and we have no doubt, the close of the season will show a deficiency of many theu- sand bales more. * We annex a statement showing the receipts and ex ports of cotton, at the principal ports inthe country, compared with the two previous seasons. The Venerable Father Ritchie brought to an Exami- nation. They have a way in the Patent office of pinning ‘ucterflies through their backs, so as to exhibit com- pletely the structure and colors of the insects to the curious observer. Just so, and just now, and with the necessary delicacy in the operation, we intend to transfix Father Ritchie. Likea great night-moth he has plunged headlong into our candle, and the exhibition we shall make of him, will show that his wings have been scorched “some.” The following appears in the Union of last Saturday evening:— ‘The Washington correspondent of the last New Fork Hereld presents 60 many “ whispers” and legends, which are so flagrantly an sly false upon their very face, as to make unworthy of serious contradiction. Father Ritchie is approximating, or has past that vrand climacteric of the psalmist, of three score years and ten, and yet, with all the lights of scrip- iure and experience before him, as to the primary importance of preparing himself for his final account, we will bet a hat upon it, that when he read the ex- tract which he has quoted trom the Herald, he ripped out a round bath: in violation of an article of the decalogue, and of the Church Presbyterian. It evidently raised his dander. Now, what sort of a denial does he make? At first glance direct, co! prehensive, anc unanswerable ; at the second, itis a mere evasion, like his refutation of the rumor of a oes upon the 49th parallel. e take Father Ritchie at his word, that the only ockholdersinthe (’nion (on the books,) are Ritchie aud Heiss. But will Mr. Ritchie have us lay, our linger upon the mun who furnished the quota of the venerable editor? Wall he have us designate speci- cifically the individual who is, de facto, the stock- holderin the name of Mr. Heiss, of something equi- valent thereto, from his hold upon the establish- ment’ If he does, we ehall bring him up to the 49th yarallel, and let him rest there with the administra- tion, in all the glory ot his gossamer equivocations. Bat there is another point in Mr. Kitchie’s com- mentary, worthy of especial observation and rebuke, ld ashe is, and respected as he should be for his He says, “the scribbiers who originate these culous tales had better go to work upon the streets of Washington, and work for their honest bread,” &c. Now, there is in this insidious little sentence, a covert, supercilious, arrogunce of supe- periority in character and standing, which is inad- inissible and untenable. What does the old codger mean to say? ‘Why, you poor, pitiful devils of scribblers, degraded as are the common, low, lubor- ers upon the avenue, ye have so far debased your- , that ye deserve to be ranked in the same | class.” This, we think, isa fairinterpretation. The recommendation was designed as a slur upon the letter writers, and not as a compliment to the labor- ers on “the streets of Washington.” And despite s democracy—in the face of his organship of a re- publican administration, his inherent ideas of the ‘vulgar’? and the ** highly respectable” are so strong, that, in degrading the character of the letter writers he descends to the “ vulzar” condition, as he doubt- less thinks it, of the honest workmen, good as he, ‘upon the streets of Washington.” ‘he fact 1s, there was a radical error committed in phteing this old war-horse in the shafts of the covernment organ. He has no longer the strength in his back to bearthe weight of the burden he will be doomed to carry. He has kept old Virginia so jong, and so slumberingly to the principles of “98 and “99, that we find her now in improvements, in enter- prise, in education, in agriculture, in Seeryslisie, even'in her pride and poverty, still maintaining the standard of 98 and,99, while hee sister Statesaround her are marching forward with the era of 1845. And in this condition, Father Ritchie leaves Virginia to take care of the administration of the whole country. He leaves her, as far behindhand himself as he has left the State. Nor must the venerable editor presume teo much upon the dignity of his position as the “ organ.” What is it as compared with that of the letter-writer in the premises for the New York Herald? We have carte blanche; we treat of men, and of measures, cf circumstances, and in our own undictated, un- ribed, unmeasured sentiments. And we are sufficiently well paid to make the work more com- tortable than the poorly compensated laborer ‘* upon he st-eets of Washington.” How is it with Fa- ther Ritchie? He is the veriest jackall that ever lid service to the lion. He has neither soul nor body of his own; for, soul and body, he has sold him- self to the peutive. He is a courtier—he is a pi- lot-fish—he is a jackal, he is a slave—a downright slave—body and soul he is a slave. Never a spaniel bowed more obsequiously to his master than Father itchie to the administration, “ right or wrong. And shalla slave presume to arrogate superiority over a man that 18 free? It will not do, Father iitchie; it will never do. Of the Sn Leeeenty if and Mr. Richie, of Mr. Walker’s Mississippi difficulty, of Mr. ea and the 49th parallel, of H. E. Riell, and the ol Lemocrat press he is about to establish here—shall we not bring Father Ritchie to an account to-mor- row t Nous Verrons. And we have a chapter in tore concerning Mr. H. B. Wright, Mr. R. Walker, and Mr. R. M. Saunders, which will abso- utely astonish the natives, and show them how they did the business at the Baltimore Convention. Wasutneton, July 15, 1845. The matter of that “commission” is not set- ted. Mr. Secretary Walker has made his.state- ment, and Mr. Governor Brown, of Miss., has tried so far to explain as to clear Mr. Walker, and excul- pate himself from the blundering manner in which he drew up his instructions to Mr. Walker. At all events, we cannot divine what harm it would have done, had Mr. Walker on his going into the Cabi- net, delivered the commission to Mr. Thompson ac- cording to request, to fill the vacancy in the Senate- ‘The explanations of the honorable the Governor and the Secretary, we calculate will not be sufficient to restore harmony to the democratic family of Mis- -issippt. There are no less than four candidates in hat non-bond paying commonwealth for the Senate, ind each has some strong objectionable feature to erfect orthodoxy. For ixstance, there is Gov. Nutt, he is objectionable from having denounced » finessing of the Ant-Van Burenites at Balti- re and the rejection of the “Little Magic an.” There is General H. 8. Foote, distinguished for s propensity for pistols and bowie knives, which { itself would be a recommendation ; but he has vanged his political coat so. often as to be as inde- ertbable and unreliable as the striped pig. 5 There is John A. Quitman, who is a perfect ieretic to the faith of the democratic party in the very first article of their creed. He goes for payin “those State bonds” that are due to the Dutch, an: lisapproves of the doctrine of peo Of sourse his chance is good for nothing. Among themselves, they have got the party in Sissippi, into a beautiful state of glorious contusion, only surpassed by the harmonious amalgamation of the anmixable elements here in Washington. We see that the Globe is to be revived in New York. The Union of this morning, of course, wishes it all sorts of success—ihough, it is reported, that er Ritchie suggested the fi pointment of Slamm Consul at the ‘Cape of Good Hope, in order to get him outof the way. But there is a more unpleasant cadjutor in the support of the administration than is, about to be introduced to the courtesy of Father Ritchie. It is Henry E. Riell’s new paper in Wash- ington, in support of the claims, the men, and the wineiples of the old Van Buren party of the North. \tiell has bought a fine large corner lot on Pennsyl- vonia Avenue and Third street, opposite Gadsby’s ww Hotel, for the necessary buildings, and has rented asa residence, the spacious mansion on Capi- tol Hull, occupied by Col. R. M._ Johnson, when he was Vice President, and Mr. Vice President Dal- lis when he was a U.S. Senator. We learn at the | pot this morning that Riell left the city last night tr New York, and will return with bane Some of the ansatiated of the democracy of Wash- ton, are Sxulting in the prospect of Riell’s new at » jer superceding the Union in the printing of the Tyuae, tnd thereby upsetting the tripod of the ad- ministration, The concern, we are satisfied, bodes 1» good to Father Ritchie. It will bring him into a y.yer war, compared with which his annoyances trom the letter writers will be ound to he mere ‘ine Cabinet, end o is het, MOLWitislanding the safety-valve of the 1s rapidly fermenting to an explosion. And Viiv an the t U ‘ion,
