The quantity sent down by the railroad week before last, was 22,879 07 tons. Last week the quantity sent by railroad was 16,956 06 tons; by ca- nal, 4,386 17 tons—making a totat of 21,343 03 tons. Last year, to this time, the railroad carried 36,239 tons of coal yvore than the canal; while this year the railroad has (rensported 230,042 tons more than the canel. The quan, tity of coal received and transported from the Schuylkill district, to Philadelphia, this season, to the 12th inst. was 100,511 tons more than for the same period last year. The railroad has therefore not only secured the transporta, tion of the increased quantity mined, but has drawn more than one huadred thousand tons from the canal, in about six months. We annex a comparative statement of the business of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company, for one week in June for three year: AILROAD “hai, i % JSuly 6,44 Week endin duly 5345. This estimate has been exceeded during the past six months of the year, which gives the company reason to antici- pate an increase in the remaining six months, which are the most active months for this business in the year) much larger than that already realized. From present estimates, we should judge the actual transportation of coal for the year on the railroad would exceed the esti- mate at least fifty thousand tons. ‘The stock of the Great Northern Railroad Company rom Boston to Concord,Lebanon, &c.. has been all taken. ‘The capital to which the company is entitled, is a mil, lion and a half of dollars, nine hundred thousand of which had been subscribed before the books were open- ed in Boston, Seven hundred thousand fwere taken in Boston, being $100,000 over the amount required. ‘Thebanking capital of Ohio will soon be larger than ever tihes been before. Important Political Intelligence—The Way it was Done. The politica! state of affairs just now appears al- smost 93 stagnant here asit is in New York, in con- sequence of the great heat of the weather. The acceptance of annexation by the Republic of ‘Texas has removed a load of anxiety fromthe minds of the administration, and every body considers the idea of Mexico deelaring war as entirely ridicu- lous. But we have a tale to tell. Seeretary Walker is now engaged with preparations for an alteration in the present mode of depositing the public moneys in the banks, or with individuals, and it is said that bona fide seeurity will be demanded from alt depositories hereafter selected. It is said alse that he will recommend to the next Congress, u change in the present tariff, which will cause « greater division in the ranks of the Democracy ne the question of eanexalign eyer did. In faet, (learn from various sourees, that the opimions of M ; n Van Buren and Silas Wright on the question of the tariff, caused more serious secret orenven tothe selection of Mr. Van Buren, by the ore Convention, than even the Texas question, and itis rumored that the tter was only made the pretext of opposition ; thathis views having been previously and privately ascertained, he was brought out by the letter of Dr, Hammett of Mississippi, in opposi- CL ARIONED B. nae D. The true secret, now developed, was his anti-southern views of the tariff, and I be- lieve this to be the case, forit comes from an au- thentic source. I am sorry at not having it in my power to send you the author’s name, but it is im- possible, the fact having been thus confidentially stated. If sucha secret combination between the southern, western, and south-western politicians could defeat Van Buren, you will see at once that Silas Wright stands a very poorchance. Buchanan is stillin a worse predicament t aneither, as he and his strongest adherents in Penney ivanis, syawed themselves openly protective tarifites at the paign of last full, and even “ out-bluffed” the W a in their advocacy of the tarifl. This over bluffing the Whigs on their favorite measure, is now free- ly talked of here, and laughed at as a good joke. or the humbug of those days. Secretary Walker is preparing the way for his own nomination tor the Presidency, and his first grand political move will be given im his report to the next Congress, when, it is asserted, he will re- commend a reduction of the present tariff to the re- venue standard, as itis called. The introduction of Texas as a State will surely add much to the south- ern and western popularity of the measure, and you inay rely upon it, from all that I can learn, the ques- tion of the tariff will be agitated again as soon as Texas elects her Congressmen, and sends them to Washington.
