BY LAST BVEEING'S MALL ‘Washington. ‘orrespondence of the Herald. o WW asuawaroen daly 9, 1845. Aspect of Affairs with the Administration Disclosed, and sundry other matters for the candid considera- tionof the reader and the Executive, §c. “ Whom the; Lord loveth he ehasteneth,” saith Holy Writ; and on the same ground, (we say it re- verently,) because we love the Administration—be- cause we wish to see it successful—because we de- sire that it may escape the shoals and quicksande that lie before it, we intend to point them out; and if there is found a little more pepper and salt in this epistle than is usual with the indulgent correspond- ent of the Herald, it will be because further indul- gence would be inexpedient and out of place. Ist. Tue Presipent—He is ima bad box. Aswe have heretofore shown, from every quarter he is ex- citing the opposition and displeasure of every clique ot the party. Like the infernal spirit of old— “ Which way he moves is hell, And in the lowest deep, a lower deep Still threatens. But of all his annoyances, it is alleged, that the ap- prehension of the defeat of the “organ,” as printer tothe House, isthe severest. It is whispered among the quid nuncs that Cel. Polk has funds invested in the ‘‘organ”—that his private Secretary, Mr. Knox Walker, a clever aud amiable young man, is # stockholder to a large amount; and that Gen. Ca- meron, of Pennsylvania, an original stockholder, was lhught out by the joint-stock company of the administration, in expectation of the hundsome.di- vidends that must accrue fromthe House printing, f the securing of which not a chadow of doubt was entertained in the outset. But the friends of Blair and Rives, the friends of the Constitution, and of the Tyler-men or young democracy of the U S. Journal, are equally obnoxious to the cliims and the prospects of the “organ.” And with the defeat of the “ organ” the administration is hors du combat — Will it be defeated ? Nous verrons—God is merciful; but we shall see. ‘ i i Are not Blair & Rives hurrying forward a build- ing in the rear of Jackson Hall, for the accommoda- tion of Henry E. Riell and new ra ae per? A month or two willehow. And while this movement is making, under the sanction and sup- port of the old bunkers of the north, the States’ rights men of the south are equally united upon the Constitution. But a single interrogatory or two, en passant, to i Faruer Ritcute—Will he stand out for the Sub- Treasury? Is he in favor of its resuscitation? We Joubt it, and the doubt is fren and it is doing s1- tently serions damage to the claims of the Union in the north and inthe south. We are now assured thatthe next Congress will compel the administra- tion into the measure, if possible. But again, is not Father Ritchie in his heart a devotee of the explo- led pet bank system 7? of a league among the State banks as the depositories of the public money ? and was not his original acquiescence in the policy of the Sub-Treasury a forced and extorted acquies- cence? Verily, we believe so, as firmly.as.we,.be-, « lieve that . “A man convinced against his will, Is of the same opinion still.” But again, Mr. Ritchie denies that the 49th parallel N. L. has been eared upon as the Oregon boundary between the high contracting parties. he narrow- ness of the denial satisfies us that some such propo- ition has been a matter of serious negotiation, a fact which, of itself, will tend more to weaken the reliance of the people in the administration then any other infraction of any of the measures which the administration was elected to consummate. Only look at it. The President in his inaugural, solemn- ly declares our ‘unquestionable title” to the Oregon territory, as clairned under our established bounda- ries, and three months after, we have the Secretary of State seriously reflecting upon the surrender of nearly four degrees of latitude. What will the country think of the administration thus tamper- ing with an “unquestionable right?” We are not surprised to hear that Mr Buchanan is anxions to retreat in good order from the Cabi- net, under the ample black mantle of a Judge of the Supreme Court. e wish him a happy escape from all his difficultes—but he might have known that in assuming the settlement of a question which had puzzled to the uttermost the acuteness and far- reaching sagacity of Mr. Calhoun, he was ing himself into a dilemma that would be_troubl in the extreme. If he now escapes from the Ad- ministration without a singeing, he may thank hie stars for his good fortune. Re Mr. Secrerary Watxer—Is in the crisis of # malignant disease. He was charged with having been so early and ultra an annexationist from hie interest in Texas scrip; but having cleared up this matter to an honorable acquittance, what is his pre- ent position? He is likely to fall a martyr to a ma- nia, alleged or real, tor the Chickasaw lands. There was a bill before the Senate.last winter for a trans- fer of the adjudication of these Indian claims, if we recollect right, from Washington to the local United States Courts in Mississipp. Mr. Walker advocated the bill with more than usual energy and perseverance. It passed the Senate—it went to the House, but there Mr. Tnompson, of Mississippi, innocently and honestly exposed the corruptions that must inevitably result from such a law, and the bill was deteated. Shortly after Mr. Thompson was. appointed by Governor Brown to fill the vacancy of Mr. Henderson, and sent on Mr. Thompson’s cre- dentials to the care of Mr. Walker, and these cre- dentials Mr. Walker is charged as having wets: ed for alength of time, thus depriving Thompson of the compensation of a Senator and mile for the extra Executive session, which immediately followed the regular session last winter. We refer you to the Mississippi papers. There seems to be a tull determination on the of those leading po- liticians of the party in that State to sacrifice Mr. Walker unconditionally. It is useless to equivo- cate or evade the actual position of the case. We would rather, at thig moment, stand in the uncom- fortable attitude of Sam. Houston, on_ the Texas question, than in the positton which Mr. Walker iow occupies before the State of Mississippi. He | has played, it rs, a bold game, but the danger 3 playe sppeare, o bold fame, b mminent, and the result wi sre is reason to his withdrawal from the Cabiuet, and his | formal excommunication from the party. Day after day the chasm between the party, or ra- ther he cliques of the party, and the administration, becomes wider and deeper, and more hazardous of upproach. In this condition of affairs, all the nerve, ll the energy, all the fearlessness, all that self- liance, which is in the character of the Executive 18 required, every bit of it. There must be no quailing no shuffling—no caressing the good graces of this or that faction ; but let him plant himself upon the reat measures of his electioa, appoint men to carry j them out, and let the jealous, the unappeased, and the unrewarded rail on. But verbum sap, &e. We are afraid that Capt. Voorhees is to be broken ipon the wheel—we are afraid that he will be un- conditionally discharged, or auijeotnd to an almost equally humiliating suspension. - We hold him to be « competent and excellent officer, and should meee that his services were to be lost to the Navy, but theré seems to be a strong current against him. | Mr. Cave Johnson returned to town this ge but we have not learned as to the exact object | result of his official visit to Baltimore, in relation to the transportation of the mails. A spirited volunteer corps, from Lancaster, Pa., | known as the Lancaster State Fencibles, arrived in own in this morning’s train, whence they were e- corted by the Washington Light Infantry to their quarters at Coleman’s Hotel.
