The new-comers may chuckle and bless their stars for the good fortune they attain to, while the ousted may console themselves with the reflection, if they choose, that it is a long lane which has no turn jin it. lore Morton, however, has proved himself no politician, at least from the outset of his career as Collector here. He has now made some thirty-five removals—more than two- thirds of whom have beendemocrats. The consequence of this course is that a tremendous influence will be at leisure to befriend him when he shall come up for con- firmation before the U. 8. Senate. But he deties public opinion now, as he has ever done, and if he does not ““break down” totally, in his present position, he will avoid what befel him, to a great extent, as Governor of this commonwealth. ‘He is looked upon as a political suicide, and I doubt much if his public career will not close within the twelve-month. But we shall see. A most ludicrous farce has been enacted here within a week, relating to this matter, At the time Secretary Walker thought proper to appoint Mr. Geo. Gibson ab <Assistant Appraiser in the Customs—-who, by the w Morton removed among his first changes—a noti inserted in the newspapers here calling upon the “radical democrats” to assemble for the purpose of passing re: lutions sustaining Morton, and censurmg the higher pow- ers. The meeting was to take place somewhere in Corn- hill, and the hour of eight o’clock was named for the commencement of operations. The “especial friends of the Collector” were particularly invited to be present — Unfortunately, 8 o'clock was too early, as it was not dark till half'an hour after? A ligut was fastened at the head of the stairs where the meeting was to be held. none ventured to approach, snd at nine o'clock the was doused. The door-keeper was lamenting the failure of the thing, when a brace of the faithful ventured up the stairway, and were admitted. The door-keeper was again stationed, and a stranger ascended towards the hi “Who isit ?” enquired the guardian.— “So-and-So,” was the re} What do you want ?—are you a friend to Morton } “Yes.” “What do you think of Ben F. A long speech or two was made, in which the Collector was soaped, Hallett was black-balled, and Walker was denounced—when a tall young man arose, and declaring himself ‘‘a radieal of the worst kind,” concluded a ten minutes’ harangue as follows—“Now, Mr. Speaker, I nominate that this meeting ajourn si ny-dy, to meet agin whenever Ben F. Hallett shall quit Washinton—cos it aint no kind 0’ use to do nothin’ while he’s thar!” This was adopted nem. con., and after voting, to publish the proceedings of the meeting in thelLive Radical,” the im- mense concourse dispersed. The probability is that another attempt of a similar character will not be made at present, as this one terminated in total failure. Verily the horizon of politics grows dailymore and more interesting to tne quiet looker-on, who would study the phases of human nature, and who ‘has the faculty of tra- cing effect to cause. The political arena at this time pre- sents a curious, varied, interesting and mysterious scene —the actors in which are prompted by tultraism and mo- tives of selfinterest—each one of whom will devour his neighbor, body and soul, to serve his own peculiar pur- poses ; while, if need be, he will swear hourly eternal fealty and friendship to the man he is seeking to destroy ! Political parties are self willed and intolerant, and while they are constantly aiming, professedly to remove the mote from their opponents’ eye, they mark not the beam within their own!
