Well, the glorious Fourth has passed, and people have resumed their ordinary avocations. We never witnessed such a delightful day. The weather was clear, and a re- freshing breeze kept the atmosphere pleasant. Every thing exhibited tranquility. With the exception of the Native Shifflers parading the streets with a ship drawn by horses, the day had the appearance of the Sabbath ; and indeed the Natives were so few, their ranks so empty | and meagre, and their spirits so checked, that even they could not disturb, for any length of time, the almost uni. versal quiet. The celebration of the day commenced by the torch-light procession of the Natives, at one o'clock in the morning. At3}o’clock the guns of the Navy Yard | have been as follows : commenced firing, and from that time till after daylight | there was continued explosions of various firearms in every direction. At7 o'clock the First Regiment of Ar- tillery paraded, under Major R. K. Scott, marched to Penn Square, at Broad and Market streets, and fired ‘eu de joi, dismissing at about nine o'clock. The itical parties had their celebrations ina quiet way, | and the rest of the day presented the Sunday aspect , There being but little excitement, of course there were but few accidents. Marcus Morton was a candidate, and had no doubt ofa seat in the cabinet. For this post he was beaten by the more cunning and wily Secretary of the Navy. Without any preconcerted general arrangement, we have had a remarkably happy day in and about Washington, with a sad and melancholy conclusion. The Temperance people celebrated the day in the President’s grounds after the {most approved cold water fashion; and between two and three o’clock Mr. Buchanan might have been seen among them Tejuvinating upon iced water and a lemonade, verily believing that— “There is nothing so For an old bachelor’s blood, As a glass of delicious water.” Several companies, societii i citizens went off to the woods, while lots of the country folks came to see the fun in town. the laying of the corner stone of Jackson Hall, we i i rty of friends, to the Rock Creek Episcopal Church, several miles north of the city, to see how the Ladies Fair was progressing, in the grove, adjoining that rural place of worship.
