York dail monstrances and deputation against the co St dae appointments in the Gasinee fisuse. and threats, open and undi |, against the elec tion the as. printer to the House—from every qu arter the most unchariteble ns and | ing the appoiptment: Lane to | jand—from every section apprehensions as to the stability of Mr. Buchanan upon our “unquestion- ble right” to the Oregon Territory ; and to crown all, a rankling jealousy of ener clique that every other clique but itself is held in Executive favor ; 2 jealousy which has increased, is increasing, and nnot be diminished, will show you ata glance that Captain Polk is the very crucible of torture, per- plexity and mortification | What will be the result of these internal dissen- sions in the family? South Carolina demands the discharge of Mr. Buchanan—Mississippi of Walker —the barnburners of York State are equally bent up- on the sacrifice of Marey; and as we predicted months ago, we see no hope of harmony—no pro- ci of peace, except in the reorganization of the | ered a perfect beauty in mould and form. Now, to a man with half an eye, disint unprejudiced, the policy of Col. Polk is conserve tive and commendable. His object is the concilia tion of all cliques by ¢s fair a distribution of the “spoils” as possible. And while he succumbs t the necessity of obedience, to the requisitions of re- talintive proscription, his conscience evidently g not with him-in the work. Yet his very delay in this ungrateful duty, is perhaps his only alternative of preservation. For there is truth in the remark of Mr. Calhoun, that a political party is held together by the cohesive power of the public plunder. Sup. pese the offices, hen: all to be filled; the housands of unsatisfied claimants, for a share in being cut effectively from the prospect of patronage, would fall back, or a large proportion of them, into. the manke of the opposition’! herste balsty; therefare, in the suspension of the work of rotation, for while there are whigs to be displaced, there are hopes for the ten thousand expectants who never can be gra- tied with even a sinell of the treasury chowder pot, in any event whatever. It will not be strange, therefore, that at the next Presidential Congress, large body, the balance of power, from disappointed expectations of reward, should wheel about into the ranks of the opposite party, and carry its candidates into power. Phe bonds of party—party principles— pay associations and party measures, are power- less against the power of the spoils. And the diffi- culty to their distribution by Col. Polk, is the jea- lousy of the cliques as to the influence which each is likely to obtain in the choice of the succession. His laudable policy on the other hand, to evade « commitment of an advantage to any faction, seems only calculated to bring down upon him and his or- gan the combined oppositien of all. His appointments clearly indicate this neutral po- licy, and the malign opposition of the several clans, and their active agents in Polk’s election, as clearly exhibit their discovery of his unexpected, and_un- precedented plan of operations. Stand fast, Mr.Pre- sident, stand fast. There isnoreceding now—there is no time to pause and reconsider the em adopted. A Hite more of the iron will—a little less of John Tyler’s flexibility, a little more of impera- tive decision, and promptitude of inexorable action, will soon give you the control of the cabinet—the command of Congress, and the tacit assent and co- operation of the cliques. Boston. Boston, July 2, 1845. Collectorship—Appointments and Rejections—Concord Freeman—Rantoul and Walker. The Herald is so universally read all over the Union, and having established itself so tirmly for candor, ability and extraordinary political sagacity and foresight, it is a most desirable medium of communication. I see in some of your late numbers, some original, and to my mind very correct predictions, with regard to the effect, | and result of the late course of the administration. You | mention dissatisfaction among different portions of the democracy in the country and in your city. So it is here and all over the State, and it may with truth be said, | from pretty much the same causes. Marcus Morton was a candidate, and had no doubt of a seat in the cabinet. For this post he was beaten by the more cunning and wily Secretary of the Navy. Surly, dejected and morose, he moped about for several weeks, declaring he would not take the Collectorship, for which he was strongly committed, on paper, for Frede- rick Robinson. But finally, finding the Administration did not care much whether he was cross or not, in viola- tion of his pledge to Robinson, he consented to take the Collectorship, solely upon the condition, that “ he should have his own way about every thing.” Things went on very quietly for several weeks, when a batch of some twenty appointments came on, almost all of them democrats—leaving a large number of whigs remaining Then commenced a tremendous howling and yelling about the Collector’s ears. He stood it a little while with some complacency, but at last Old Mississippi turn- ed Among these removals was one George Gib- son, an inspector, who is and has been a fast friend of Benjamin F. Hallett. A few days since, Mr. Gibson was hurled back in Morton’s teeth, as an appraiser, through Mr. Hallett’s influence. The Collector must be particu- larly proud of his influence at Washington. In addition to this, the Collector sent on some twenty names for ap- pointment, to enter upon their duties the first of this munth—rumor says, Mr. Walker will not confirm them and has written he does not approve his course.” Won- der if this democrat butcher calls this having his own way! The bristles rise on the back of the “twenty- one-year-service” democrat with indignant fury. The Concord Freeman, one of the ablest democratic country papers inthe State, always firm, consistent and unflinching, utters the sentiment of most of the sound democracy of the State, in the subjoined extract. Mor- ton wrote to Washington before he was appointed, that the city democracy was corrupt and ought to be avoid- ed, and that the country party must be encouraged and fostered ; but according to the tone and feeling of the Freeman, he is likely to “have a good time” in his nur- sery efforts, The writer of this paragraph is, no doubt, C. C, Haswell, Esq , who is about to enter the editorial chair ofthe Ohio Statesman, the organ of the giant demo- Cracy of the great west, ‘The Freeman says :— “George Gibson, Esq., has been appointed assistant appraiser in the Boston Custom House, by the Secretary ofthe Treasury. Mr. Gibson, it will be remembered, ‘was one of some twenty democrats removed on the Ist of June by Collector Morton, though the name of the whigs who hold office under him is Legion. The con- duct of Secretary Walker in placing Mr. Gibson—who has ever been a most faithful and efficient officer, and who was removed without the slightest cause—in a situ- ation much better than that which he was deprived of through the operations of a malice which might be call- ed detestable, were it not too petty to rise to the dignity of wickedness, is universally approved by democrats ; and must be as gratifying to Mr. Gibson himself, as it is deeply mortifying to his small and malignant persecutor, of whose general acts it would be speaking in too flatter ing terms to say, that they are so very trifling, such in- finitestimal doses of littleness, as to be as much beneath contempt, as he himself is beneath common decenc complaint.
