J Sixrx_Drviston.—Officers and subordinates of the several Departments, other civil officers, strangers and citizens. A very ret ly of men.— This division was particularly remarkable for the vast proportion of umbrellas, new and old, black,yel- low and green, which it carried along. the sid walks a fai ater procession followed the_ re; line, or led fhe way to the Capitol. The main was not everan hour and a quarter in passing our iocation on the avenue, and the whole number in the regular line did not much exceed two thousand men, aie the congregation at the eastern portico of the Capitol, of both sexes, would make an aggregate, perhaps, of some six thousand persons. he excessive heat prevented many persons from joining in the line, who, with a cool and cloudy day would have fallen into the ranks; and the harvest time, and the necessity of getting in the crop with all despatch, prevented an, general arrivals from the country. We noticed, therefore, very few of the yeomanry ofthe land in the crowd. No merely par- iy banners allowed. THE SCENE AT THE CAPITOL, Was imposing; a vast crowd had collected o. he slevated terraces at the west pert, to view the line coming down the avenue, and a large number quiet- ly waited in and about the portico, and upon the flight of steps on the eastern side, in order to have a place to hear the orator of the day. Tho portico was oc- cupied almost exclusively by the ladies—at least five hundred clustered up'there. Oh ! how beautiful they did look. The President, his Cabinet, the Diplo- matic corps, &c., occupied the platform with the ora- ‘or A long and eloquent pryer by Rev. Mr. Sprole ofthe 24 Presbyterian Church. Music by the hands. Then a discourse of some three hours dura- ion, a history of Jackson’s life, and an eulogium, by Mr. Secretary Bancroft. After which the pageant dissolved. 7 5 js Mr. Bancroft acquitted himself to general admira- tion. Many persons, however, after catching his style, and the drift of his discourse, dro} off to dinner, and by the timeche had finisned full one third of the multitude ha i been subtracted from his audi- tory. But of this branch of the obsequies an asso- ejate will amare ree! inform nes . =" expect to send you Mr. Bancrofi’s oration to-night. " Hany Pate rour P.
