An increase in specie was anticipated, but it was supposed that the contraction that has been going on for the past few weeks, would reduce the amount of loans be- low that of February last. The deposits to the credit of the Secretary of the jury in the government banks, on the 28th of April, 18%, were about a million of dollars larger than on the 4th of March, 1845, but $5,242,797 less than on the 24th of November last. the Treasurer for each period, showing the amount at his credit in the various banks holding public deposits, and in the mint :— MontHiy Statement oF Fired Treasurer or THE Unitep ira New. 2% Mar¥. ipl, 28. This increase is in the old deposit banks. The North River Bank has been added to the deposit banks of this city, and had, according to the latest report, $282,- 939 on hand, making the aggregate increase in tho depo- sits of the banks of these three cities, from March 24th to April 28th, $960,196, The deposits to the credit of the Secretary of the Treasury in the government banks have increased in the face of a decrease in the revenue, and an excess of expenditures over receipts for the quarter ending March 3ist of $5,245,097 06. We annex a statement of the receipts and expenditures of the Treasury for the quarter ending March 3ist, 1845. It will be seen that the payment of the loans of 1841 and 1843, are included in the expenditures, which is one cause of their being so large ; deducting these amounts and the receipte for the quarter, would leave a small balance after paying the usual expenses of the gov- ernment. env Exrexpitunss—Usitep States Tarasuny. + $6,376,575 485, 6,881,107 Espenditures — Civil List, Miscellaneous, and ‘oreign Intercourse, .... . 1,709,407 Onnecount of amy, «$1,131 (890 86 Indian Department, .. 130 07 Fortifications, . , ooa19 0 Pensions,.... + 1,406,199 19 Navy, . + ses Interest on the public del 38,062 oe peta « es loan oft 4,012,686 Reimbursement and interest of Trea sury notes,. The excitement occasioned by the war meeting in this city, has not subsided, and the factions are arrayed against each other in a decidedly warlike attitude. The idea of such a man as Thomas McCully disputing with Charles J. Ingersoll the post of chief officer of a meeting got up for the purpose of giving shape and form and tangibility tothe sentiments of our people upon the subject of our foreign relations, is supremely rediculous, and shows that the real object of the movement on the part ofhis sup- porters, was merely the manufacture of political capital. Not that dignified kind of capital which has for it object the success of a groat party ; but that paltry and pestilent capital which looks solely to personal advancement , which is made subservient to mere office begging, and which, from its extreme littloness, has heaped so much odinm upon the party politics of the day. People have heretofore condemned parties because they were unable to single out the hucksters who gave to oF a movements this peculiar characteristic. day, however, they had the opportunity of pats is~ tinction, so far as the democratic party is concerned, and are giving expression to their opinions in a way not to be in personal Uriwie i onder to advance tetr clafis to in pertonal wis in 01 r to advan eir 6 office have overl eeeeives and their downfall will be as si ow hag and im} nce was eir selfish: is play “Si popalerty im ye to his y, ennsylvania, may he exclaim, from ipecimen of the BanDSR, in whieh , they have cireaiy attempted to manage his interests, bs 4) me from my friends.” To Thomas McCully and clique, may be attributed the sole cause of the wena ts of nativeism in the first hey, ressiodal district.
