We are going to have a great fight here in Bos- ton, before long, a regular cold water fight. It will beakind of a triangular contest, something like the celebrated duel recorded in Peter Simple. In the first place there will be the Long Pond advo- cates peppering away into the backs of the Charles River advocates; in the second place, the Charles River folks pouring it into the rear of the no water champions; and in the third place the no waterites banging away at the Long Pond champions. You might naturaily suppose that the whole question was settled by the action of the late Legislature n the city petition in favor of Long Pond, Bui ch thing. Oar wise law-givers in their wa- gave the ey government a choice cf Long Poud or Charles River, and also put in a pro- vision that the charter should be accepted bya mojority of the legat voters before it should be ia force. So you see tbe whole matter of water or 10 water is again to come up before the Bostoni- “in town meeting assembled,” and you kuow enough of the Yank » judge ulat the y will also raiment to the lection of one or tie other source of suppiy. This is, in brief, the ground wok of ihe water batile, of which the skirmishiy « at the outworks are elready com: meneiar — the newspapers. ‘To add a litle xlorion, confusion into which the whole affair is now t own, the Legislature have also required a: atot the town cf Watertown oa Chailes taking the water from that source, and conse quently detach sents of the Boston belizerents 1 be sent to that Lown to tufluence the ection of its citizens in town mecung. cluding Texas, isn’t it! The city government, just at present, is carrying ona very pretty little domestic v ” versus whiggery. The! Mey 0) rd ot Alder men are all “natives,” ? and the Common Couneil is mostly whig, with a@ moderate sprink! locos. Thre are several city appvin some value, which are made by tie joint action of he two branches, the Aldermen by courtesy hav- the initiative. As a consequence of this, full blooded natives are chosen by the Aldermen for these offices, and the Council non-concur, and coe full-blooded whige. So they keep it up, pulling and hanting like boys at opposite ends of a rope. Just now the Aldermen have chozen a “ na- tive,” yelept Widger, for superintendent of one of the bridges, and the Couacil have on their part chosen one Gaffield. These differences give rise to the most bitter feelings, which tend more and more to the sundering of the “ universal wiigperty” of Boston, and out of the whole scrape the locos must profit, and no mietake, have little or nothing else to tell you in the way of politics just now. Morton has not as yet entered on his duties at the Custom House, and Uhere is a rumor abroad that he has gone to Wash- ington to get the lay of the land there, aud see what will be expected of him when he takes hold. Williams, the pregent Collector, has just returned from his fool’s errand to Washington, end blows up his two coffer advisers for sending him on as Hil did. itis certain that if Williams had made seaunies in the proper quarter, and in person, efore he left, instead of trusting to.a band of boi- ie nosed and’ stupid pimpa, who coined lies to suit him in the absence of autheutic information, he might have learned that he was already superseded, and by that means have saved a hundred dollars sural aero: and a hearty laugh at his ex- pense, jut the truth is, the men is such a con- stmmate ass, that he don’t know how to act, ax, after all, itis of precious little importance how he does act. He is a part of the scutn thrown to the surface by the Tyler tempest during the last four years, and in these more quiet and rational times, will be suffered to sink to the bottom egain, as food for senipin, skate, ond such like fish. There hes been a number of fadinas abont ovr city for some days past, from the Eastward, sel- Mis.the fancy articles of their simple manutacture, such as baskets, moceasins, andthe like. They ure covered with brags and tin orgaments, being xetu ated by alove of such trifles like the predec2seors of their race. ‘They are some really handsome ie- males among them, and some fine manly torms, bat thev all seem to be imbued with a spirit of apathy or sluggishness. Theee Simon Pure “nv- tives” are the descendants and only remuins of the Sokokes tribe, a division of the Penobscots, and iahabit an island in the Penobscot river, opposite O:dtown, so called, situated just twelve miles above Hangor. These people, in ancient times, had a uost singular mode of burial for their dead, and, indeed, it was practised until quite Jately. Tt was aa faibies —The body of the deceased, after ha- ving undergone the usuai ceremonies and ineanta- tions, was “buried by bending down a young tree til its reots are turned up, then excavating sut- entearth to make room for the body, Great country, in- which fi was placed in the cavity, after which the tree is permitted to spring back te its upright position, taus forming the grave. There’s an idea for you worth chronicling. There are some queer stories told in relation to these people, relative as to the noer of choosing their mates, which is said to be much after the mode adopted by the feathered tribe, viz. a busband and wile living together tora tvelvemouth—the ¢pring being the mate ing season There’s another idea t. r yourreaders. What an age do we live in. A quaint writer has e>mewhere remarked that steam has set i's foot vpon pastoral Ife x ate eciuaily as gunpowder upon chivalry. We hardly realize the benefits we enjoy through this same agency of sieam. The Herald, torinstance, flying trom your cteam press at 4 wiolacl. [Correspontence of the Herald.) Provipence, March 7, Lovelock, PM. Trial of Nicholas 8. Gordon The Supreme Court of this State was in session this morning at 10 o’clock, for the purpose of com- mencing the second trial of Nicholas S. Gordon, charged with being an accessory betore the fact to the murder of Amasa Sprague, late of Cranston. ‘The first trial of the prisoner, you will recollect, resulted in a disagreement of the jury. At the hour appointed the court-room and galle- ty were crowded with spectators. Chief Justice Durtee, and Justices Hale, Staples and Brayton, were on the bench. The counsel for the State, Blake, Attorney General, and Potter; and the counsel for the prisoner, Rodgers of Boston, and Carpenter, and Curry; of this city, were in their piaces. Among the spectators I noticed the Hon. William Sprague, brother of the deceased, who, from the fact of his being frequently in conversa- tion with the counsel for the State, 1 should judge felt much interest in the trial. Margaret Gordon, sister of the prigoner, was algo there. She sat by tue side of the unfortunate Nicholas the whole of | the forenoon, and looked the very preture of grie!
