who would be happy in 1 or a coal miné, oF © With one fair spirit for his minister.” And the elderly matron in white, with a black velvet cap and white feather, in eare of the re- doubtable Captain, is a distinguished literary lady from Columbus, Ohio. Well, then, fer God's sake dou’t introduce me; blue eyes will do, but a blue stocking is next to the penalty of reading the Mas disonian. But, there’s a youngster who reminds me of Randolph of Roanoke, of whom it was said— «He was long, and Jean, and lank, ‘And moved upon @ spindle-shank * Don’t sey so—he is a 200d fellow, thovgh @ little awkward for anattaché of the British Ambassador. He Bids well, however, to have the rough edges filed off his expreesion, gut, and carriage, by at- trition, with refined American society, Nothing helps a young aud talented foreigner so much— evenjhis physical conformation is improved by it. But, let ua te!’ you of the ladies. There wa: so >rcely a lady who might not claim to be handsoiu~ in the company. The ball was a happy hit in this umportant particular—a very good and palpable hit. For instance, there was the aie of Major D (don’t know who) of this city, most exquisitely atured in light pink satin and gossamer muslin, with a circlet of pearl beads and York roses rouud her head, diamond brace- leta upon herarms, &e.; observe the harmonious contour of her face and figure, litle as she is. Ah! my good fellow, we can’t allow you an intreduc- tion, especially as that conceited pedagogue in specs is so very much absorbed ; and Miss L—t—te, a half sister of Com. Moore, naval hero of Texas ; the lady in white yonder, “The languid lustre of whose zpesking eye, The flitting smile of whose bewitching mouth, (Which more than all betrayed her natal sky, And left us dreaming of the sunny South;”) and Miss W. that? light.formed airy creature, with the pearls around her fair brow—a true blue, pa may rely uponit; and Miss B. , with her Il and elegant outline and bright eyes; and that elegant waltzer, Miss S—t—a, and tl ose ladies of the French and Austrian embassies, how simply they are dressed, and yet how becomingly, except- ing those funny velvet caps, which are scarcely re- deemed by the diamonds with which they are but- toned; and there was also Miss T—br—ice, of Va., a scion of loveliness worthy the old common wealth ; and Miss D—k—ss, what an elegant fi- gure, and what a warm and oriental mouth she has to tems us wherewithal ; and the little Miss late of New York, so delicate, so pale, 80 sweet —she seems as one “Who lov ‘but knows not whem she loves, Nor what his race—nor whence hecame.” There issuch a pleasant melancholy expression in her fine eyes. But in our individual judgment, the queen oi the evening was Miss G—n—r, of Fau- quier co., Va. She was jtall and elegantly propor- tioned, with that lively, radiant and transparent complexion so peculiar to Virginia ; and “Her eyes sweet charm ’twere vain to tell; But look on that of the gazelle, It will ussist thy fancy well” And there was also her pretty cousin Mies R- in blue. Miss G. danced La Polka with Mons. Korponay very charmingly ; _Among the gentlemen were the French and Be!- gian Ministers, Army and Navy officers, Lieut Pope, and Dr. Heiskell, of Va., among them; John’ Tyler) , of Va., one of the handsomest and Most graceful men in the Union; Hon. Messrs Broadhead, of Pa. and Brown of Indiana; Mr. Burton, late of the National, and other distinguish: ed characters, and strangers. There was a supper of substantials spread below at an extra charge of fifty cents; whilst the ladies were provided for ina contiguous room to the sa- loon, free of extra cost, as usual. Many gentle- men, we are sorry to say, in taking advantage ot the ladies privilege, escaped the necessity of that extra half dollar, ‘and the number who took supper down below was, therefore, like the Yankee’s gold eagles, “mighty skace.”” + By and large, from first to last, this Benefit Ball waé an elegant and charming affair. It could not be otherwise where such men as Waddell, Tyler, Pope, Porter, and others equally aw fuit were the Board of Control. Consequently “When next a ball like this comes off, 23 May we be there to see.” Bos. Harrisburg. [Correspondence of the Herald.] Harrissure, March 18, 1845. Pennsylvania Politics -—A Wheel Within a Wheel. Sm :— I take the liberty to give you an account of the sayings and doings in this place. For the last two days the weather has been fine, but this evening it commenced raining. ‘The whigs and natives, and a few of the democratic party, have had a glorious Jubilee this afternoon at Wilson’s Hotel, rejoicing over the great whig triumph in electing Gen. S.- mon Cameron, of Middletown, to the United States Senate over the caucus nomination. Oa the night of the 12th the democrats held a caucus meeting and nominated George Woodward, of Lu- zerne Co., andythe whigs, being in the mainority, made no nomination, but Jay back for any ‘bargain and sale” that might offer Mr. Cameron, to se- cure their votes, pledged himself to support the whig measures. It is also said that he_ promised to support the native cause to get the native vote and a few democratic votes, and he was therefore elect- ed by one vote over the regular nominea, Came- ron was a very lucky man, indeed,to belong to three parties, He has been a leading democrat, and the most shrewd, wire-working and dangerous politi- cian the State ever had: The whigs are rejoicing ; the natives swear that one of their men was bought, and the democrats feel sore to think how they were deceived. Iunderstand Mr. Cameron leaves to-morrow morning for Washington.
