We had a fall of snow this morning, which was succeeded by & raw northerly rain, but the clouds begin to break away, and we have now some little sun- shine. Busiaess appears to be brisk, and business men, draymen, &c., are active. Stocks have de- clined again, as can be seen by reference to the proceediogs of the Board of Brokers. State fives have declined one quarter, and Gerard Bank shares the yame from yesterday’s quotations. Texas eight per cents exhibit a falling off also. Welch opened his Circus last night to a a Pretty good house, andthe performances went off i The Walnut street Theatre draws well with the balletof the Revolt of the Harem. These are the only two important places of amusement open. We have concerts, lectures, &c., but they don’t ap- pear to attract much attention There was an election at Camden, N. J., opposite the city, for municipal officers, The natives made a vigorous effort, but what is the result is not known, as the judges and inspectors have not yet finished counting off. The United States Court are engaged in the trial of a man named Forbes, for a mutiny on board the ship Farwell, as she was leaving this port some time since. "At the time of the mutin , the mate of the vessel, aa old man, was killed. he Quarter Sessions was engaged to-day in the trial of petty cases. Politicians are busily engaged in preparing for the spring election, which is close at hand. The election of Schoo! Directors for the different sec- tions by the corporations, took place yesterday. There was an attempt on tlle part of the natives, to et possession of the schoo! boards, for the purpose of creating another disturbance by the introduction ot sectarian disputes, but the result is understood to be against them I fear their insensate course may in the end destroy the school system, a catastro- phe which is, I hope, for the present averted. The bills now before our Legislature, to provide an efficient police for the city and dis Ticts, are not looked upon with any interest by our citizens. In facta geperal apathy appears to prevail upon the subject. ‘Fhe contemplated action is regared by some asa mere excuse for wholesome legisiation, whieh is believed to consist only in the entire con. solidation of the jarring municipal corporations of the city and county into one. Chairman. Messrs. Purtapetruta, 11th March, 1840. Mr. Eprtor :-— It rained in torrents all day yesterday. The Methodist community 1n this city are thrown into a dreadful turmoil. One of their leading clergy- men has been held to bail by Alderman Davis, for one of the most extraordinary eases of seduction, that has taken place for many years. It appears this reverned gentleman was appointed by the church to gather funds for cheritable purooses. He fell in with a widow lady, a member of hie chureh, who had a most charming daughter. He furnished a house for them to reside in out of the funds collected for charitable purposes. The daughter says, he has seduced "her, ind she finds herself in the family | way, and the “very mischief is to pay.” She says, he told her the only two sinful acts were stealing and murder. There are great efforts making to smother this matter up and keep it from the world. Tne Pb ape are laughing in their sleeves, and getting he handsome tees, as much as they may secret- leplore the villainy of the act which every good aiee willdo. David Paul Brown is employed for the prusecation, and George W. Barton tor the pious defend I will inform you as the matter progresses Jtisrumored that Charles Jared In- ersoll will be appointed Senator in the place of t, Buchanan. e triends of Mr. Buehanan say that there will be no removal from office in this State for four or five weeks yet. All hands are waiting tor the result Josephine Clitton is at the American Hotel in this city indisposed; Yankee Hull also, in good health and spirits. Walnut Street Theatre is do ng a tremendous business. Fancy stocks have im- proved a litle. There appears to be a disposition & carry them up higher. Penneylvania 5’s are sought after very much. Money is very plenty— paper caa be done in the street at 44 per cent. Market street is lined with merchandize ready for shipmentto the South West. The dry goods mer- chants are doing an immense business, Large numbers of western and southern merchants are arriving daily. The fashionables are mak ag great preparations to visit the various watering places the coming season. Newport, Rhode Island seems to be a great hobby with some of them. There will be a great moving mass in mo- tion the coming summer, as folks, now a think they are not fashionable unless they travel through the heat of the sumer and work them- selves down (o brilious attacks occasionally, and spend a great deal of money to make themselves uncomfortable. People who will travel must put up With inconveniences. Cc. M.
