Capital, &o., this company has progressed no far- ther thon to make surveys of routes, and is now waiting the revival of trade, to obtain means to commence thei: road. It is the determination of this company not to be gin building their road until they have sufficient money to go through at once. It is surprising that the road has not been completed long before this the trade of the valley of the Connecticut, and connec! with eight hundred miles of railroad completed in New England, and five hundred in New York. It would se- cure to us the Canadian trade which the Bostonians are 80 enxious to draw to their city. It would keep open acom- munication with the West, and now that the roads in this State are permitted to carry freight during the close of we should be able to transport freight to and from the West throughout the year. The Harlem Railroad Company have petitioned the legisla” ture for permission to extend their road farther north. The object of this move is undoubtedly to take the place of the New York and Albany Railroad, and to annul, if pos” sible, the charter of that company the public which company builds the road to Albany, so long as it is built substantially ani speedily; but the old New York and Albany Company have the best right to the route, and their right should be protected for a certain time, and if the road is not completed within that time, annul the charter and leave the field open for others. A road to Albany is much wanted, and judiciously located would be of immense advantage to this city. Our eastern neighbors are striving hard to teke the Northern and Western trade away from this city. Capital, enterprise, energy and perseverance are likely to be brought into requisition to accomplish the object they have in view. It is necessary that our capitalists and business men should be alive to this thing, and loose notime in adopt- ing measures to secure to this city the numerous advanta- ges it now enjoys. Before the Recorder and Aldermen Cozzens and Gale. Trial of Samuel Adams Resumed —Upon the opening of the Court, the trial of this case was resumed. The question before the Court was, an objection to hi ing the three drafts accompanying receipt offered in ground of a variance between the instru- ments themselves and the averment in the indictment. Mr. Stanssuny said, that after consultation of counsel they had discovered that the variance did not apply tothe third count of the indictment alone, but that the variance ran through the whole s point, the question of jurisdiction would also con and it was the intentien of the defence to argue t' He held that the most fatal variance occurred in the third count, which recites that acertain draft, kc , &c , where- as, in fact, there were three drafts, ‘was thatof venue, the indictment setting forth that the offence was committed by Samual Adoms, merchant, of the first ward ofthe city and county of New York, where- agit should have been set forth that Samuel Adams, of Chilicothe, Ohio, to wit, of the firat ward, &. Mr. Parrenson and Mr. Waiting replied to the defence ‘ariances were not fatal, and Tt matters little to In arguing that Quotations for stocks are generally settling down to a point lawer than yet reached, notwithttanding the abun- dance of money and the reduced rate of interest. The recent ad pressing the market, and previous to making purchases, to deliver, The absence of outside speculators serves to weaken the bulls of the street, and give the bears every opportunity they wish to depress the market. The advices from Liverpool in relation to the cotton market are not considered by operators so fayora- ble as anticipated. The sales reported as having been made in the Liverpool market were confined principally speculators purchasing very lightly. The absence of any speculative movement ot the slightest im portance, and the movements of manufacturers in pur- chasing stocks, are looked upon by holders in this mar. ket as very unfavorable features, and indicative of a ther depression. The immense receipts of cotton at Liver. poolfor the week ending the 10th of January, and the firmness of prices, cannot be considered very encourag- ing, as the srrivals had not been brought upon the mar- ket, and the stock on salo had not been materially in creased. It appears hardly possible to sustain present prices of cotton, without some extensive speculative movement, either on this or on the other side of the At- lantic. We see, at present, very little chance for any such movement to spring up her the other side.
