Conviction of Charles T. Torrey—Sales of Stocks. Public excitement and anxiety as evinced in the tumultuous thronging to the halls of justice, had if possible increased since Saturday. On that evening the defence closed with the address of Reverdy Johnson, It was an able and impressive effort, characteristic for the peculiar stand from which the orator himselt viewed the offence—in- directly declaring himself an abolition’ its true sense—(no political one)—but scarcely distinguish- ed us a manifestation of original genius or oratori- cal grace. This morning the trial opened with a reply o the Prosecuting Attorney, G. R. Richard- son, After a brilliant exordium, he confined him- self to review the evidence of the facts coming under the authority of the laws ot Maryland, and closed with a powerful appeal to the jury not to confirm by their verdict the vanity of those men who pgotend to be governed by the laws of Heaven in infrioging the Jaws of men, and strive to justify the abortions of a corrupt mind as the dictations of God. His nddress was fall of eloquence, argu- ment and sound logic, and the audience could sev- eral times hardly suppress a general murrnur of ap- probation. The jury retired at five minutes to 12 o’clock, and after an absence of one hour and a halt, returned with a verdict against the prisoner provouncing him guilty on all questions. Immedi- ately atter Cox, E q., «ne of the detendant’s coun- sel, moved an arrest of judgment and a new trial. It was aquarter to two o’clock when the j jury were discharged. The traverser himself appeared to bear the verdict with equanimity. Yours, truty, L. na oF STOCKS at THE Bai-timonk Stock Boanp» Tw) Bal’ & Olu» RK Bonds, 1024, , boo Bub Techanits?
