The Beginning of the eason—A Peep at the Ho- tels. _When I left here, two weeks ago; all wes ex- citement and anxiety about the elections, Upoa my return, on yesterday, every feeling was calm, and scarcely a word was said Upon politics. The whiga, to be sure, wear gloomy and disappointed Countenances, and amiles, happiness and good feel- ings, enliven the democrats. It is nght that it should be so. It ie said that the friends of Mr. Polk intend to celebrate the victory they have ob- tained on Wednesday next, by a splendid proces- sion and illuminations, in a manner expressive of the pleasure they feel, but without any violation of the personal feelings of their epecneats Such a sentiment is worthy of the enlightened and chival- Tous people of this place. 1 wish that every section of our couatry would be animated by the same high-minded teelings. “ This place appears to be very bie in pre forthe approaching session of Congress. Eve! thing beare the stamp of improvement and embel- lishment, worthy the capitol of this great and glo- rious pation. The improvements in the pum! and style of the public hojels are inconceivable. The hotel kept by Jesse Brown, its old and proprietor, as heretofore, ranks No. 1, without any disparagement to the other hotels of the city Great, very great improvements are made to this estab- lishment, which render it equal to any other hotel in the United States, for convenience and elegance of accommodation. The dining-room has been most tastefully and elegantly painted in fresco, with new furniture, and every other accompani- ment, and is most decidedly one of the aod and handsomest 1 ever saw The house, ‘rooms, and every department belonging to it, has beem changed, and made as comfortable as could be desired. No public table in the United States is more profusely supplied with every luxury that can be had, and the independent for- tune of the proprietor can obtain; and the atten- tions und kindness shown by every person attached to the establishment, all .combine to reader it the most agreeable house | ever put ‘p at. What makes it still more desirable, is the low fare which the indepeadent resources of the proprictor enables him to charge, as he supplies his table chiefly from his own farm and garden with the best of every thing These remarks are made in justice to the establishment, by me, as @ stranger, from what I feel and enjoy. T can also say, that the hotels kept by Mr. Cole- man, as well as those by Faller, Gallabrun, Tyler & Birch, and several others, do credit, not only to the city, but to their obliging proprietors. I walked this evening to ihe Capitol, and was much pleased with the cea imprevementa ma- king in the diflerent rooms ur the accommoda- tien of Congress at the approaching session—every thing there was “bustle and business,” to ready for the representatives of the people. z Should | remain here a few days longer, I will endeavor to glean sone leg 1o write about to you egein, should you deem my letters of any interest. Wasuinaron, Saturday, Nov. 16, 1844. Brown's Hotel—The New York Herald—The Lions —The Whig Standard—The New Administra- tion, and the New Cabinet—Election Returns, &c. §e. Dagar GENERAL :— What a comfortable place for lounging ii hotel. Our hosts of this popular establishment in filling the front room and the back room, too, with cushioned seats, as soft and luxurious as those of the ‘*grave and reverend seignieurs” of the Sen- ate, have secured a permanent “lot of customers,” resident as well astravelling. Where are all-our great betsmade? At Brown's hotel. Where are all political questions discuesed to their forty-third reading? At Brown’s hotel. Where is the best place for a bachelor resident to read the papers by a glowing fire of anthracite? At Brown’s hotel.— Where is General Allen, late of the Texas army, ot the revolutionary war of ’86—a veteran among veterans? At Brown’s hotel. Where is the Herald most read and iam greatest demand t— Every where the great work of “pro. ress” has extended, and especially at Brown's otel. All the hotels of our city have been thoroughly ‘ fixed. Dickens would say, “they have,” and among them we are proud to _re- commend the “fixings” of Brown’s Hotel. We accord this as a gratuitous recommendaiion, and it cannot fail to be equivalent to five thousand dollars to Brown’s Hotel. Coleman thinks us quite a gentleman for three Jines of a compliment as justly deserved. What will Uncle Jrsse’s boys Ke the Herald correspondent, and the Herald, when he rea in hia morning gown, our tribute to Brown’e Hotel? 1B to come in. C.J. Me- The lions are begin Nulty, the talented Clerk of the House, an¢ several of his aids, who have all been on the “ ki vivy” pending the saceeigs, are at Coleman’s, and we noticed Hon. J. M. S. Caustn’s name yesterday in the register at Brown’s Hotel, te The Whig Standard is suspended. The publish- erg of that paper deserve weil of their party, and ought to be remembered, if the party ever comes to life again. For the present, it is as dead as Biddle’s monster monetrorum. Gronpe of politicians are boxing up a Cabinet for James K Polk. We believe that he will appoint one to please himself; and that John C. Caio will be retained, while Col. Butler of Kentucky will be made Secretary of War, and Col. Butler, of New York, or Silas Wright, Attorney General ; Andrew stevenson, of Waele! Secretary ol the Navy; Samuel Medary of Ohio, Minister to France, or Senator Ailen, who is a French scholar ; Bancroft of Boston Secretary of the Treasury; Levi Woodbury, Minister to Russia; Cave Johnson, Minister to England, &c.
