Jt is estimated that there must assets amounting to at leest two raillions, a large part which is available, The improvement in many of the urities held by the rec'eiver, and the general advance the value of all species’ Of property within the past 0 years, is certainly suffic.'¢nt to induce the stockhold- to make enquiries regarding the whereabouts of the perty. The stock of this conrpan y is held principally brokers and speculators, who ; vurchased it at the weat prices, and have a very large margin for anim- rovement. The original holders o: £ this stock will not ‘ive all the advantages arising frou , any movement that ay be made to impweve the assets o { the concern by the iver. There bas recently been very few operations in the street in this stock, and vrehs.ve no doubt holders anxious to get up sn excite metat for the purposes of reating speculation, It matters little to the receiver of ets of this company, w ‘ho the stockholders are, hether they are speculators« the original holders, he hould keep those interested in formed of the actual posi. ion of the company’s affairs fro m time to time, so that the value of the stock may be regt Jated accordingly. The Banks of Plymouth cov aty Massachusetts, paythe following dividends :—Plymou th, three percent; Old Co. ony three do; Wareham three do; Hingham three do. — It is expected that the Duxbury Bank will pay toits share- holders another dividend of tv ro per cent of its capital on the sameday. The Old Colony lasurance Company pay dividend of six per cent at t] 1e same time. 4"he value of the exports ‘from New York for Septem- ir, was nearly double that for August, and nearly equal the value of exports for both July and August. INotwit: standing this, the balance against us on our own jimportaty ons is steadily and repidly increasing. We an- nex a table: showing the imports and exports to October: 1st, and the balance against usin our foreign trade :— trict of New Yorx, puaine tHe Finst Nine ON THs or 1844, I Imports. They cannot get out af debt by postponing the time of payment; the MOF int to be paid isonly accumulating and must become M9 ce difticult to Mft eventually. There is not the slightest foundation for the reports ‘that large quantities of foreign manufactures—of the re- cent impottations -have been re-shipped, sent back from whence they came. The total value ot foreign merchen - dise exported from this port from January 1st to October, according to the above table, is only $3,350,683. This amount is composed of many items of merchandise of the growth and production of foreign countries, except fercign manufactures. In August and September only $522,525 worth of foreign merchandise,of everydescription ‘was exported. This is sufficient evidence that nearly the whole of the immense importations of the past nine months is yet in the country. Owners of these goods abroad much rather submit to a sacrifice in this market than in their own, both on account of their pocket and credit. Our auction houses are filled with these foreign manufactures, and prices for them are depreciating every day. Many jobbers have been serious sufferers by the late decline in prices. Large purchases were made early in the season, at the prices then current, in anticipation ‘of avery oxtensive trade. They have been unfortunate in their anticipations. Trade has not been so active as looked for, and prices have fallen, from the immense sup- ply of goods aud the diminished amount of business com- pared with the spring trade. The importers, jobbers and retailers have very large stocks at this moment, and great sacrifices must be submitted to by all parties. We have too many goods in this market to keep up a healthy state of things. Our manufacturers have been, all through the season, very actively engeged in turning out goode, and the market is as much overstocked with domestic as Soreign manufactures, and the depreciation in prices is equally as great on one as the other. The first evil effect of the over-trading carried on for the past two seasons, will show itself in the most remote section of the coun- try, among those who were induced to purchase larger stocks of goods than they were able to pay for, and who must become bankrupts by an over-extension of credits From this the troubles spread through everydepartment of business, and bankruptcy follows on. The importer @annot pay the manufacturer, unless the jobber pays him; the jobber cannot pay the importer unless the retailer pays what he owes, and the whole train of trade is so mingled together that when one of the links give way, the whole syatem becomes deranged. At the rate the commercial classes of this city have progressed for the past nine months a revolution in commercial affairs, commencing as we have stated above, must assuredly come round in leas than three years A look at the vast hange that has taken place in our foreign trade since 1843, is sutficient to convince any one of the truth of the remark, The importations into the United States for 1843 amounted to $89,255 182, and the exports to $100,- 063,266, leaving a balance in our favor of $10 808,064 A view of the imports and exports of this city fur a few years past, will settle the subject in the minds of all con- clusively.
