Immense Asscmblage=In nse Exeltement! Whig Hopes Brightening in the Key-Stone State—Fifteen Hundred Beautiful Women and Twenty-Five Thousand Brave Men and Enthusiastic Boysin the Field! Great Speech of Mr. Webster. The excitement in Philadelphia yesterday was indescribable. On entering the city from any of its numerous avenues, the evidences of some great popular commotion were every where visible. Every street was streaming with flage and banners. “Clay” and “ Frelinghuysen” met the eye in every direction; whilst suatches of whig songs and bursts of whig music came floating on every breeze. No one could doubt that “the country’s risin.” The county sent in its thousand of representatives of both sexes, all ages, and conditions, and in all sorts of vehicles. One wagon in perticular from Valley Forge, attracted our a‘tention, and that of all who saw it. Nor was this strange. It was driven by a sturdy farmer; beside him sat his wile, a comely matron with fine black eyes, and behind stowed away with marvellous economy of space, no fewerthan ten children, of years varying from fourteen to two—the offepriog of the rustic pair, and an illustration of the sacred text— Thy wite soall as a fruitful vine by thy housesides be hy eblidren like to olive plants, about thy table round. Worthy of the patriarchal household of the royal Psalmist himself. A dozen flags or more streamed {from the top and sides of this wagon, and above all the rest, one banner, with the not altogetier inappropriate metto—*Clay and Pro- tection to Domestic Industry !”” So numerous were the representatives of the lady whigs, thatit seemed as if the whole female population of the city and county of Philadelphia had come out in all their smiles and loveli- ness to honor the occasion. At every window in the street through which the long proces- sion passed—on the road and on the ground where the meeting was held, bright eyes “shed influence” upon the scene, and gave to it an inter- est, brilliancy, and effect, not equailed even by the joyous beams of the bright October sun; albeit he, as he pursued his way in the cloudless sky, like a warrior rejoicing in his strength, added not a little to the life and interest of the day. At least fifteen hundred ladies were on the ground, many of them ot very great beauty, and surpassed by none in that respect, the female members of the family of the gentleman who gave the use of the ground for the meeting, and who surveyed the scene from an ad- joining eminence, on which their hospitible man- sion stand. The place of meeting was about three miles from the city, on the Frankfort Road, in a large and well-selected field, on the farm, of Mr. Pieker- ing. A substantial platform with a suitable awn- ing had been erected, and the accommodations for the reporters were excellent, although they were terhpurarily disturbed by the uncourteous conduct of two of the marshals, who insisted on seating themselves on one of the tables, from which they were ejected with a little trouble, oc- casioning a few moments’ interruption to the reporters who were writing at it, We mention this with a view of teaching them, and all others in like circumstances, better manners in future, tor itis a fact, that generally the greatest annoy- ance to the members of the press on such oc sions, arises from some of the very ivdividuals whose busioe ss it is Lo preserve perfect order. The procession did wot wtrive on the ground till near two o'clock. Mr Webster was amongst the first who arrived, and on his appearance, he was very londly cheered by the thousands sean use sembled. Aftertum came the “Kentucky Delega- tion,” who also met a cordial greeting About a quarter towwe o’clock the meeting was organised by the appomtment of the Hon. Joun Saneunr as chairman, ‘The Rev, Dr. Hieains then ofiered up a prayer of #bout fifieen minutes duration—a ceremony which, somehow or other, does seem out of place on such ap occasion, #Atter this prayer, Mr. Sanaeanv stepped forward aud returned thanks for the tavor of fis appout- ment as chairman, ‘ arked that the occasion was ene of no ordinary charac’ at ut that season When the truits of the erih ad been gathered in, that they should return thanks tor the kindness of heaven (A stentorien votce—" But where are they 7” Laughter und conlusios.)
