Some Freestone Seedling teaches, trom Mr. Eddie, of Rahway, New Jersey; they were not quite ripe ; some of them weighed ten ounces, measured ten inches in circumference. were named the Shotwell Peaches. Six others, more ripe, from Mr. Lawrence Van Wyk-, ot thus city ; very fine, but not sv large as the former, bur ot a peculiurly pleasant flavor. ‘They were offered tor compeution. Some beauntul Apple Seedlings, Greaves, of New Jemey. A tew tine specimen of Isabella Grapes, from Mr. Sieel, of New Jersey, aud Mr. Howes ot this cuy. Alter this, a few observations were made by the chairman on the empioyment of sea weed, ora Certain description of peal, for the purposes of ugn- culture. Mr Carren then drew the attention of the m ‘a stalk of hemp presented by Charles Cunnmg® of the minth ward, It measured eight inches round te joints, and mx inches round the boay ; the topmost branch ‘was 16} feet high; and the branches extended between five anu six feet. It was more thau two men Could carry, and u spring Cart was obliged to be used for that purpose, Mr. Carter said that he had been informed that by heating water to 160 degrees, the hemp would come out finer than flax, and in some degree supersede the cotton. ‘The pre- duce of this one stulk would not be less thun 2 Ibs of very shemp. He reconmended the attention of tarmers particularly to the culuvation of hemp, ihe soi und character of this county being generally well adapted jor {tw production, ‘That during the whole of his travels in Europe he never saw such a stalk ag the one then before the m it war thea stated by a member that generally the larger the stalks were the more course Was ihe hemp, and of Jess value. ‘Mr, D. J. Brows drew the attention of the meeting to a specimen of Osage Orange, which he presented, the sur tace of which, be said, was rough like Mosaic, only all of acolor, He said it was unauveot Red River, and as en ornamental tree was exceedingly valuable, and made most excellent fences. “here ned been wa attempt to propagate tue eilk worn on it, but not with success ; this wood would imprt adye to water ; and was used by the Indians for bows, and it was said that they could do more execution, in killing animals, with a bew made of the wood of this tree, than others could with a rifle, and it was in consequence called by them * bow- wood.” It grew in all the Southern States, where it was found valu- uble as fences, but could not ulluvated further North than Pennsylvania. 'TLe Cuainman drew the attention of the meeting toa fact, that a lady of his acquaintance had placed some tomatoes in brine, for about three weeks, for the pur- pose of preserving, some of which were not quite ripe— that afterwards she put them into vinegar, and when she required them for use, some time alterwards, she found that the more ripe had resisted the salt and vinegar, end had as fine a flavor us any that had ever been eaten when they werein season. ‘This had suggested to him whether it was not possible to preserve this iruit in full perfection for the winter season, by some such means; and recom from Mr. 8. mended those present, who had an 0) pporvunity, to make some experi ton the subject. ‘Ouse must be taken to preset ve the stem, and the brine be a little stronger than sea water. ‘The Secnetany addressed the meeting on the value of sewing corn broad cast, whereby he suid that finer and more prolific crops would be produced. He hadseen corn which stood 10 feet high, which had been sown in this manner. ‘The Cuaimman said, the farmers of some parts of Long Ieland adopted the system, with great success, und it was found that cattle was very fond of the fodder it produced Mr. Stxae wished to kuow if any person present inade butter in January or February, fioin cattle fed on this fodder ? ‘Mr. Canter described the way that was necessary to promote the growth of corn sown broad cast, by which aman anda couple of horses could drag 10 or 12 ucres per day, and this would be only required about four times in the season. It was practiced in Indiana and Jilinos, and the consequence was that the yield averag:d sixty busi- els per acre. Adesultory conversation then ensued on the cause of the difference of flavor in the same description of fruit, and sometimes from the same tree. Some thought it arose from the soil, and others from the plants growing near the tree. It was ‘stated that a greater quantity of syrup might be obtained jrom the mapie tree by tapping it near the root, beneath the earth, than above the ground. Mr. Peer drew the attention of the meeting to a state- ment published in Dr. Gardiner’s lecture on guane, which recommended the farmers of this country not to purchase that article for agricultural purposes ; and, efter what had passed in the club on this subject, wished to know ifsuch recommendation had the sanction of the club. The aise man said the recommendation of Dr. Gardi- ner was for mers not to bu the present high prices. If ihe article could be had at a proper price, it would be better to use it. A very animated discussion tock place on the the various articles used for manure. Many con- tending that our land possessed sufficient for its cultivation; and it was said that if the same amount was laid out in improvements of agricul- ture as had been paid recently for guano, as good crops would have been produced, and more land brought inte astate of cultivation. That the coun- try had withi: elf, or close adjoining, certain de- seriptions of manure which had never been fairly tried, and might be found as productive as guano, of which facts several in es were given, The Chairman particularly alluded to a certain descrip- tion of soil found onthe Bahama Islands, which he had tried and found productive. The nature and qualities of these different manures was then enter- ed into. Ultimately the petises was referred over to the’next meeting, when, Dr. Gardiner was ex- pected to be present The meeting th adjourned.
