From some cause the market has !become again depressed, and quotations to-day show avery generul falling off. At the Old Board, Long Island declined 1 per cent ; Canton 1; Reading Railroad }; Mohawk 4; Harlem 1}; Stoning. ton }; Norwich and Worcester }; Farmers? Loan $; [)- livois }; Ohio 6's, }. Morris Canal went up 1} per cent. At the New Board, Long Island fell off } per cent; Can- ton 14; Norwich and Worcester 1 ; Farmers’ Trust 1. The sales at either Board were not very large. Sterling exchange keeps up to the highest point. Seve ral drawers are demanding 10 per cent premium. The demand is at present very limited. The money market continues very easy. Almost any amount of money can be obtained on thirty and sixty days at the rate of five per cent per annum. It is very surprising, with the abundance and reduced price of money, that there is no more specniation in stocks. There ore at present more stocks sold than bought, that iz, the bears are selling at Present prices on time. This may seem an impessibility among commercial men, but among stock operators it is perfectly well understood, The bears are pretty well satisfied that stocks are not going much beyond present prices for some time to come, and they are operating for afurther decline. The approaching elections will have a very material influence on stocks from timeto time. In this State holders of State stock are much interested in the success of the party opposing any increase in the State debt, and the value of our State stock is supposed, in a measure, to depend upon that party coming into power. On theother hand, the result of the other State elections will raise or depress the market as the returns may agree or disagree with the principles of the principal operators. ‘These things will doubtless keep up through- out the fall a very feverish and unsettled state of the mar- ket and pr-vent any very extensive operations or any very great improvement, An act was passed by the last Legislature, authorizirg the Albany Water Works Company to increase their cap- ital stock by the addition of 400 shares at $50 each. It was also provided that the new stock should be sold at public auction. Under the provisions of this law, 303 shares were sold on the Ith inst. atthe following prices: 160 shares at. 140 do 3 do Being a premium of about 2 per cent above par. ‘The receipts of the Western Railroad are still increasing very ropidly. In 1841 the road was finished to Dexter, 50 miles from Detroit, and the total receipts for the year were $71 260, yielding a net profit of $24,700. In former years it has been estimated that near ly oue half of the exports of domestic produce from the country went direct from New Orleanr, and that estimate for the time was not far out of the way, but within a few years pust, since the revolution in commercial affairs and the revulsion in the currency, a larger portion of the total exportation from the country has gone from this port, than previous to that period. A very large quantity of cotton, c., is forwarded to this market before it finds its way across the Atlantic. ‘The concentration of capital in this city controlsthe movements of produce throughout the country, and New Yerk must rapidly becomea very large exporting depot. We find the value of the principal articles exported from New Orleaas for the commercial year, ending Sept. 1st, 1944, amounts to $24,771,421, against $85,600,578 for the year previous—a decline of nearly eleven millions of dollars. Estimating this to be onc- third of our total exportation for the year ending thesame time, we find the value to be $74,314,263, ‘This cannot be far out of the way for the year ending September 1. New Orleans is, without doubt, the largest depot of sgricultur- al products in the Union, and larger shipments are no doubt made from this port than from any other in the country, but the bulk of the shipments goea to the domes- tic ports, from which they are distributed over the world In consideration of these facts we conclude that the ex- ports from New Orleans to foreign ports, cannot now be more than one third of the total exportation of domestic products from the country.
