The Convention met this morning at 10 o'clock, and was opened with prayer ‘The Rev Dr. Tyng delivered a beautiful and feeling sermon from the 7th chap. Acts of Apostles, 86th verse, in which union and harmony was exhored. After the usual religious exercises, the minutes of last evening’s session were read and approved. The Secreta- sy than read the call of the Convention ; also the rules of order. On motion, the Convention agreed to hold amo: session from 9 o’clock till two, and in the evening at o'clock, A vote ef thanks was, on motion, tendered to the Rev. Dr. Tyng for his impressive and highly instructive ser- mon, that he be requested to furnish a copy tor publi- cation. ‘Two communications were presented from the Right Rev. Bishop Onderdonk, which were not read. The Rev. Dr. Tyne rose, and in a very gentlemanly manner, called the attention of the Convention to the fact that Mr: Bennett, the proprietor of the New York Herald, “a notorious newspaper published in a neighboring Ce OM ad sent a special reporter here to have an eye vpon t! doings of the Convention, and report its precesdian. the reverend gentleman aid. he would, if # . offer a resolution excluding all pereons not members of the Convention, from occupying @ seat therein. This an important step, under peculisr circumstances, id the Rev. Doctor, He had no desire to see the pro- ceedings of this body ridiculed or garbled, the notorious print in question, and to which he alluded, A gentleman whose name | could not learn, gave the proposed resolution his warm support, when the Rev. Dr. 'yng offered a resolution to exclude all persons, not members of the Convention, or who were not invited, trom the daily sessions thereof. Mr. Josera R Incensout rose and cs Seaga to the Pre- sident, if, in all his experience in presi si over deliter- ative bodies, he had heard of an attempt like this, to pre- vent persons from admission into the Convention. | want, said Mr. I., that every act of this body bear the light of day—not to be kept in darkness. He was willing to share the re poate if any were attached to 1g the proceedings public. Rumor, with her thousend tongues, he knew, would spread abroad allegations, either magni- fied in their character, or wholly \!e-titute of truth. He was Dy ee to the adoption of the resolution, believing it fraught with the most pernicious consequences, and upon the Rev. Dr. to withdraw the same. The Rev. Dr. Duckachet remarke:! that one Church in the Diocese had always sat with closed doo! No per- sons, except members, were allowed admission. The Rey. Dr Tyng replied to Mr. Ingersoll, and ex- pressed himself strongly in favorof the immediate sdop- tion of his resolution, After some additional, but unimportant remarks from Mr Ingersoll and Rev. Dr. Tyng— ‘The Rev. Dr. Newton contended that the Convention should keep their proceedings to themselves, under exis- ting circumstances. He was oppesed to sending them forth, and Hogan the resolution would be adopted. The Rev. Mr. Rocers of Easton, replied in afew re- marks to M ngereoll, when Mr. Honace Binney rose and opposed the resolution in ‘an a’ le, eloquent and independent manner. He contended that th: proceedings of all deliberate bodies should be ex- posed to the eye of the public—any attempt to seclude any thing that might transpire here from the community, could be preductive of no good. Not the slightest neces- sity existed for sitting with closed doors, and shutting out the public generally, but more particularty the agents of the public press ‘The press, he knew. often did abuse its privileges ; but far more harm was to be hl beeper po to the choracter of the Episcopal Church of Pennsylvania by excluding the press from an opportunity of noting the doings of the Convention, than if they sat with closed doors He was tor the world to know every thing. of its Bishop would not bear scrutiny ly to discharge his duty. hed their rights and might complain, but ere the legally authorised representatives of the Church: we demanded the public te know our acts, and +he)l never shrink trom an investigation.
