M, ‘The stock market remains very flat. The operations are very limited, and prices are very feverish. Quota- tions to-day are alittle better than those ruling yesterday. Norwich and Worcester advanced-1} per cent; Stoning- ton, ; Long Island, 1}; Canton, $; Harlem, 2; Pennsyl- vania 6’s, Indiana, Ohio 6’s and Farmers’ Trust closed firm at yesterdays prices; Ilinois fell off 5. The Phenix Benk of Hartford, Conn., has declared a dividend of three dollars and fifty cents per share, for the last six months, payable on the Sth inst, Anew counterfeit one dollar note, purporting to be of the Farmers’ Bank of Maryland, payable at Easton, has been detected. This counterfeit is made payable to Wm. Hughlett, and dated April 16, 1842. It will be recollected that the counterfeit one dollar note, which made its ap- pearance a few months since, was on the Parent Bank st Annapolis, The paper is much whiter than the genuine, and the signatures and filling up badly done. Spurious notes for $500, of the Bank of Louisiana, are in circulation in New Orleans and may find their way North. They are supposed to be altered from some other bank—-vignette, Arms of Tennesse with a female Indian on the right margin, and on the left a medallion. The backs are red. The travel on our railroads seems to increase as the season advances. The annexed report of the Erie Rail- road shows an increase of about twenty-eight per cent :— New York anv Ente Rartaoap. We annex the daily recespts of duties for the past two months—July and August :— . Specie and Bullion... ... 542 Free Goods... . + 1,191,221 ——— $10,767,042 The total value of the importations for July, was $3,006,912, while the value for August was $10,767,042, or an excess of $2,761,130. The amount of revenue from customs, received at the port of New York from the lst of January to the Ist of September, of 1943 and 1944, have been as follow: Reve! January. Februal 1 for eight months, . $7,072,292 This in an enormous amount to be reeeived in eight mouths, for duties on the importations into one port. We here, see a revenue o! nearly seventeen millions of dollars in eight months, from the imports into the!port of New York, against only about seven millions received for the same period last year. an increase of more than one hun- dred per cent. The revenue received up to the Ist of Sep- tember at this port is large enough to pay the whole ex- penses of the General Government, according to the esti- mates of the Secretary of the Treasury for the year 1844, leaving the receipts into the treasury for the whole year from other sources, to be applied to the other expendi: tures of the government—such as the redemption of trea- sury notes and payment of the public debt falling due. ‘The importations paying this immense revenue have been very large, much larger than the wants of the people re- quire. A very large portion of the imports for the fall trade yet remain in first hands, The jobbers have pur- chased very largely, but the stocks of the importers have heen so rapidly supplied, that the decrease from sales is hardly perceivable. As the season advances the importers Will become more anxious to clear out their stocks, and unless the jobbers come forward and take off the stocks, the euction rooms must receive them and the market filled from under the hammer. This will tend to reduce prices, and those jobbers having large stocks on hand inust become very heavy losers. This is invariably the result brought about by over importations. We published a day ortwo since a list of the Country Banks of Great,Britain, showing the average amount of issues for the twelve weeks prior to the 27th of April last- The object of these returns, which are made under the new “Act to make further provision relative to the re- turns to be made by banks to the amount of their circu- lation,” is to show the limits of the issues to be regulated by the new banking system of Sir Robert Peel. That aystem allows the banks of issue to keep up a circulation for the future, to the extent of the average for the twelve weeks priortothe twenty-seventh day of April last.— ‘The returns made by the country banks, showing the amount of their average issues, for that twelve weeks will be of great importance, as they show how far these banka can go, and regulate the confidence that should be placed in each. We annex additional returns. Those previously given showed issues amounting to £686,278 from twenty-nine banks. Banas Issurs. Bridport Bank—Messrs Gundry ire Bank—! IMPORTANT TRIAL IN BALTIMORE. Charlies F. Torry Arraigned. Bavrimone, September 2, 1844. James Gonnon Benvete, Esq., Eprroar or tue New Youw Henarp:— Some gentlemen connected with the Bar of this city, have suggested the desirableness of having the trial of Charles F. Torry, for siding slaves to get tothe free States, reported in your valuable paper. It commences on Wednesday next, September 4. Judges Taney and Heath hold a special term of the U8. Circuit Court for the purpose. Mr Torry’s counsel are, Messrs. Reverdy Johnson and F. Gallagher, of this city; Gov Williem H. Seward, of New York; Gen. 8. Fessenden, of Portland, Maine; and 8. P. Andrews, Esq, of Boston, formerly of ‘Texas. Opposing counsel, John Glenn, Esq. and others of thiscity. The issues of the trial involve the very existence of sla- very in Maryland and all the border States. He is charged with aiding sundry slaves to escape to the free States. The questions involved are, “ Is it, can it be made, a ‘ fel- ony or other crime’ to rescue a man from slavery, by mere statute law ?” In discussing this point, the whole relations of our government to alavery will be thoroughly investigated. Again, the inquiry ‘whether slavery has any legal existence, under the constitution, in Maryland and Virginia, or whether it exists by mere sufferance and the force of custom, the subject of restrictive and sana- tory legislation, like a grog-shop or a New Orleans gambling house,” will be pursued to its utmost limit. Again, all the issues involved in the protracted correspon- dence between Gov. Seward of New York, on the one hand, and the six Governors of Virginia on the oth to be brought before the Court for tormal adjudication. You can easily see that the case will excite a profound sensation in the South, and by close inquiry you will be able to judge of the interest {elt in it in the North, though your exchange list has probably given you the Proceedings of many of the large public meet- ings already held in relation to it. You will judge, therefore, that your admirable reporters will be able to secure a special source of interest to your columns in these dry times for editors. Philadelphia. {Correspondence of the Herald.) Puitavecrnia, Sept. 8, 1844. ig with their nominations. Yesterday afternoon and last evenit.g the democrats made several additional nominations, the most important of which are those for Congress. The Hon. John T. Smith, a miserabie candidate, was renominated in the third dis- trict, and Dr. George F. Lehman in tho first district. Here, it waa generally believed, Judge Pettit would have been taken up by the democrats, but he bolted, not desir- ing, I suppose, to be deteated. Colonel Thomas B. Flo- rence, the lucky dog, missed his mark for once, and per- mitted the Doctor to step in and take the nomination he was go desirous of obtaining However, the present no- minee is a pretty strong horse, and works well in harness. In the fourth district, the whigs have placed before the people the name of Colonel Thomas Duffield, Senior, for Congress, but he won'tdo. A very nice old gentleman, and an honest man, I admit, but he lacts the qualifications for the station to which he aspires. In one nomination of the whigs, also made yesterday afternoon, I would call your particular attention, as being pethops the most ob- noxious name that possibly could be presented to the great mass of the whigs ~that of 8. Levin, editor of the Sun newspaper, as their candidate for Congress, which at once destroys ull hope of theiraucceeding, particularly with the threatened expose of Augnetus de Kalb Torr hanging ever them, Levin is an able, bitter writer. and eloquent orator, but he will not answer at Washington In the Third District, Willinm D, Baker, of the Ameri- can Advocate, ia strongly spoken of as the Native candi- date for Congress, while another portion of the +m party, insist upon James M. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 1844, | 5 Ma, Benxett— Dear Sin :—This delightful and elegant house seems destined (as it deserver) to be selected as the scene of great weddings in high life, and great entertainments. Two things continue to cause this. One is, it has the most d suite of parlour and bed-rooms, opening to each , that can be found in the country, and the other is the excellent manner in which the obliging landlord, Mr. Hartwell, conducts the establishment. Last night the celebrated Cherokee Chief, John Bi was married to a beantifnl young Quaker girl, aged on} 18, pained Mary B. Staples, of Wilmington, Del.
