Philadelphia. {Correspondence of the Herald ) Puriapetruia, August 25, 1844. Our city has again been disgraced by a body of men styled firemen. About 9 o’clock last evening, the Fairmount Engine Company, located in Spring Garden, accompsnied with several hundred per- sons, many of whom were armed with clubs, &c., went into the District of Southwark, evidently for the purpose of creating a riot, as there was not the slightest cause for their entering the already exci- ted district. The Weecacoe Hose, with whom they have long ween in deadly conflict, stands in Queen street near Front, and within the imme- diate vicinity of the house did the Fairmount pro- ceed. At Second and Catharine street, a fight en- sued which | bout twenty minutes. Clubs, stones, and even fire arms, are said to have been used—the whole neighborhocd was thrown into a state of excitement and alarm—the lives of citizeus were endangered, and that too by men professing a regard for law, &c. ButI am pained to record these things, and would only re- mark that unless the authorities of Philadelphia put & stop to the proceedings of the Fairmount Engine Company—close their doors—our streets will, ere long, run with blood. They are a desperate set of men, 4s their past conduct proves. Sheriff McMi- chael is, [ believe a member of the company. They were presented, it is true, by the Grand Jury asa ee but what care they for that? Shame— shame. _A most destructive fire occurred this morning, a little after 12 o’clock, at Eighth and South streets. It commenced in a shed adjoining a teed store, which was soon consumed. In a moment sever adjoining framers, occupied asa machine shop, sta- bles, and soap and tallow Thessry, were enveloped i ‘he scene was truly appalling. ‘The in flames. whole were burned to the ground, together with two valuable horses, and several dogs. The roof of the brick dwellings on Emeline street, were burned, and a three story brick in South street, almost entirely destroye This last house was occupied by a number of abandoned women, who lost everything they, possessed, and barely escaped with their lives. The pawnbroker’s shop of Mr. Donnelly, adjoining the above, also suffered severe- ly, the contents of the store being entirely ruined with water, while the upper part of the building was burned. The Proverty adjoining to the east and west wus several times in imminent danger, but fortunately the wind was calm, otherwise a most most disastrous conflagration would have ensued. The toto! loss may be set down at $5,000. The sufferers are Messrs. Gilbert, Wood, an, Bloomer, Donnelly, and one or two others whose names I do not recollect. The Fairmounc fire company was upon the round, its members armed with clubs, &c., no lonbt anxious for a broil. The democr tic meeting at Camden, yesterday, was rather a slim affair—talling far short of expec tation. Mr. Dailas was net there; and Colonel McCahan, of Buckshot war renown, issaid to have made the best speech. ‘Tne whige at Newtown, Pa, had a tremendous affair, excecding anything of the kind ever wit- nessed before in that section of the country. ——————— SHIP NEWS.
