The total importation into this port for seven months, is valued At $45,931 .245; a sum amounting to more than one half of the total importation into the United States for the whole of last year, The reduceé value of onrjexports so far this year, looks very unfavorable, and the small amount ex. ported in July, shows that the buik for the season has gone forward from this port. The importations for the year, at this rate, must exceed the exports so largely ,that payments of the balance would not only ex- haust the credits that may be established abroad, but an immediate liquidation would drain us of a muchlorger amount of specie than we could spare. The banks of this city have on hand $9,159,078; a demand for a few millionsof this would, at firat, have a very unfavorable effect on trade, and on’ all descriptions of stocks; it would tend to depreciate our circulating me- dium, as there is no law compelling Bur banks to draw aa much peper from circulation ag the amount of specie leaving the country; consequently, there would be great danger of an inflation in paper issues, and a correspond- ing influence on prices. These are the evils that may ariae from a severe drain of the precious metals. The ben- ofits likely to be produced by shipments of specie at the present time, would be the cessation of importations te a great extent, and a rapid equalization of our foreign trade. An expertation of three or four millions of dollars at this time in specie, would doubtless curtail very materially our fall importutions. Nothing can turn the tide that is setting so large a quantity of foreign manufactures to our shores, but the creation of a panic by large shipments of specie. Our packets are caily coming in with very valuable cargoes, and the fall im. ports bid fair to be larger than the spring’s. The above table gives a correct statement of the foreign trade for this port upto the first instant. Unless some movement is made to arrest thecourse of this trade before it has gone too far, the results will prove deplorable. We have great confidence, however,in the evil working out its own remo dy. ‘So soon as a certain point is reached, a reaction must take place. So soon as exchange reaches a specie point, and the precious metals go forward, the balance egainst ua will soon be settled, as a rapid curtailment of orders must then take place. We have no foreign loans to draw on to regulate exchanges. The loan negotiating for by the Commissioners of Illinois, would, should they succeed in settling the business in season, have a very favorable in- fluence on exchanges for a time, but the loan being for only $1,600 000, would go but a little wey, in supplying the demand for bills that must soon be springing up. Affairs in Philadelphia. Tuespay, August 6, 1844. Sate or THe Puniic Worxs.—Another attempt was made this morning, at the Exchange, to sell the Delaware Division of the Peansylvania Canal, but the result was, that only eighteen shares were disposed of to the first bidder, at $100 per share. Speculations upon this subject are rife, but I only give the fact, and leave your readers to make their own Conjectures, as they can generally do, and ar- rive at about as correct a conclusion, as if they were to hear the remarks and whisperings of plots and counterplots, which are retailed among the financial cliques of this city. The fact is, the peo- ple are always onthe qui vive to find out the causes of particular occurrences, and so foud are they of imagining some intrigue, some wheel within a wheel, and detecting the same, that they are apt to look far beyond the real cause, which usually lies just before them and nght under their noses, and light upon supposed fects which have about as much influence upon the matter, as does the price of buiter for Queen Pomar table, have upon the question of the balance of power in Europe. Now 1 believe thatthe reason there are eo few bid- ders for the Delaware Division of the Penneyl- vania Canal is, because people dont want to take it at the price at which it is limited, or that the hold- ers ot State stock deem the same more valuable than stock ina canal compeny. The sale will be resumed to-morrow morning, and every morni ull the expiration of the twenty days, aod. thouge the number of shares sold may increase daily, yet, from present appearances, | do not think the terms of the law will be complied with. Tue Murper Cask —The examination of the case of Rebecca Brown, who is said to huve been murdered by her husband, under circumstances of more than ordinary brutality, was concluded last evening by Alderman Hoftner, for the Coroner, and a verdict was rendered that she came to her death by blows received on her neck, head and breast from her husband, but ax the evidence of the Physicians, who made the post mortem exami- nation, was that they could discover no traces of the peculiar atrocities said to have been perpetrat- ed, they retused to embody them in the verdict. They had been sworn to as her dying declaration, but as she was a dissolute woman no reliance could be placed upon her. 2 ’ S Poutricau.— The delegate elections for the city and county of Philadelphia took place last evening among the democrats.
