a0) (Cobraspondence of the Herald} Boston, July 24. Forgery of a Bond—Aitempt to%Rob the Dead. Dear Bennett: As soon as I can obtain particulars, you shall have a full account of a most villanous transaction, that ia now undergoing examination. The sum total is, that a couple of outrageous knaves are more than suspected of having forged a bond of a man now deceased, and have put in a claim for payment. The executor of the estate is an henest mechanic, and will prove a hard customer for the | for rogues. Look out fora full statement of the case in my next. Joruam. Dayton, Ohio. (Correspondence of the Herald.) Dayton, July 16, 1844. The Herald in the West—Natural Advantages and rapid Progress of Dayton— Manufacturing En- terprise and Hard Money—Society and Politica— Prosperity versus Banks, §¢. &¢. In every town from east to west, we find the Herald universally read by allclasses. Its financial rectitude, political impartiality, its straight forward advocacy of civil and religious liberty, make it sought for by preachers, politicians, merchants, far- | ¢¢" mers, and mechanics; by all, indeed, who know the value of a faithful transcript of the passing events of the world. The improvements constantly taking place in this city are astonishing, and ite advantages and facili. ties for doing a Jarge businessnot lees so. Situated in the middle of the Miami Valley—that garden of the West—intersected by the Miami Canal, and by eight turnpike roads—its streets wide and umi- form, its dwellings, churches, and other public buildings on a scale of elegance farin advance of its age, it must ome, and that soon, a place of great importance. The inhabitants at presentnum- bers 8000, and are rapidly increasing. There are eight cotton and woollen manufactories, flouring, paper, and oil mills, foundries, machine-shops, whilst brass and wooden clocks, shoe-lasts, and va- tious other Yankee notions are turned out in an abundance only ee by that of the yellow fields of harvest. ‘There -is water-power now suf- ficient for 12,000 spindles, to which an addition is making of as much more, by bringing the waters of Mad river to the city. The enterprising compa- ny who have undertaken the work, are sure of suc- cess; already the greater part of the water power is taken for new manufactories ready to commence operations. Perhaps the best feature of all these improve- ments is that they are carried on with real capital. ‘We are not overrun with irresponsible banks, their deceptive and dangerous specu ns that first en- courage all kinds of overtrading, and no less epeed- ily ®prostrate their unfortunate dupes. To those who argue that a banking ayetae is indispensible to commerce, I would triumphantly point to this, the second largest city in Ohio, whose merchants do not ask credit, whilst its trade, inhabitants, manu- factures, We. are increasing more rapidly than any other in the West. 7 The city is laid out with good judgment. Its streets are spacious, and nicely gravelled. It has its ‘West End,” its promenade, and as good a turn out of coaches may here be seen as in older places of much larger pretensions. The Miami Valley hold out great encouragement to all disposed to settle in the west in any kind of mantacturing business. Cotton is as low here as in the east ; wool and iron lower, and the price of all Kinds of provisions not more than two-thirds. In addition to the profits of eastern manufacturers, the saving in the cost of transportation on the raw ma- tertal, manufactured gooda and_ provisions, cannot be less than 15 a 20 per cent. In proof of this the manufacturers here have made money, whilst some in the east have suspended operations. Society is as good here as in any New England town. Colleges and seminaries abound. The sys- tem of common school education is spreading its benefits far and wide, and affording to the poor the blessings of early instruction. s . Politicians are busy, but they can’t kindle the fire of 1840. Parties stand about the same as when tne whigs lost by 10,000 of them stopping at home. each thinking that his single vote was immaterial in the contest. If after reading the present you think it worthy of insertion in the Herald, you may probably hear from me at some future period, when I shall give you some statistical information that may excite tLe surprise if not the jealousy of our eastern fees RX. Why 1s New. Yorx te Firturmsr Ciry 1x Annrica 1—This i it is vain for the’ newspapers to rail, the corpora- tien to pass ordinances, and the people annually to oust one party and try another, while the only effi- cient and preventive remedy for the inveterate and offensive nastiness of our sy is passed unheeded. ‘We may waste millions of gallonsof Croton water, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in sweeping and scraping the streets, but unless the pesvennre system is enforced, the city will “be filthy still.” How 1s London, Paris, any great city of Euro or America, preserved from pestilence and pollu- tion? Simply by the preventive system. Now, in New York, who knows or cares whether filth and garbage are hurled into the streets or not? Those profound sages, the “conscript fathers” of the city, seated in their arm chairs in the council chambers, may utter their prodigious nothings till so ople, fe ee with their inanity, apply the argument fertort, and, préject them into the midst of their ycfatetben thising constituents, all their windy suspirations will amount to nothing. We are behind the age— we are too vainboasting, too much devoured by party spirit, fanned by reeeet Crone culators, through the means of rum shops and little lyin, newspapers. For many years tan aan eed police system, admirably adapted to any great city, has been undergoing a most thorough trial, and its efficacy has been found so great that it has been extended throughout the whole empire of Great Britain. But we, in the plenitude of our self-suf- ficiency, pretend to Rotiive the wholesome example of the country from whence the very elements of our civil liberry have been derived, and which every slang-slavering print in the land is eternally elping, when they buily-wrag the poor devils of Mexicans about ‘Anglo Saxonism.” Faugh! Let us, for once, abandon flabbergast and humbug, and adopt a eece thing, albeit it comes from those we hate. It New York could be prpxekt to adopt the preventive police system, all these evils, which prove a curse and a race to her and to republi- canism, would be remedied. A proper police would enforce our city ordinances quietly and de- cently, and what is more, economically. Then, for God’s sake, let us all unite in demanding from this new party in power the adoption of the law passed by the Legislature last session. I suggest Ne the propriety of a public meeting of all parties to urge the matter on. Vox Porutt. To tue Eprrors or tae Evenino Express, N.Y. .Messns. While reports from nearly every other authority, placed the yield at 1,600,°00 ‘and 1 600,000 bales, we repeatedly stated that the crop | siate, would produce much more than these estimates, and that notwithstanding the acceunts from the South continually | p, coming to hand, the number of bales produced would prove to be much larger than those extensively engaged in speculating in the article at the time would believe — ‘The returns up to the latest dates. which we annex, con- firm our statements and must satisfy those deeply inter- ested, that correct accounts, in relation to the markets, ‘&e., can onlyfbe derived from those who do not recognise the slightest distinction between buyer and seller. The last year’s crop amounted to 2,373,000 bales, being only 10,000 bales more than the receipts up to this time—making the same calculstion for this yeartacrop, and the total yield will not vary much from 2,007,000 bales, exceeding our esti- mate only seven thousand bales. The first pickings of the new crop will soonbe forthoom: log. The season thus far has been unusually favorable, andin theabsence of atiy thing very destructive to the growing plant, the yield. must be enormous. The freshets and floods at the South westhave been greatly exagge: rated, as reports from that section in relation to the growe img cotton crops invariably are. Speculators will not be 4 ‘able—should the season terminate as favorably as it hos eommensed—to get ups tories of short crops, that will be so generally believed as they have recently. Speculators in the Liverpool market have often been deceived by reports from: this side. The operations last spring were§ caused, to a greatextent,by reports that the crops would be shor. Puapevruta, July 27, 1844. Tux Two Carrains.—I observe you noticed the dispute hetween Capt. Saunders of the Markle Ri- fle corps, and Capt. Fairlamb of the Wayne Artille- ty. This latter company, be it known, are as brave a set of fellows as ever smelt gunpowder. They turned out strong on Sunday night, and not a man por of them flinched during the fight. In addition to this, they charged up Queen street for the distance of two squares, in advance of the troops, and near- ly to the muzzle of a piece of artillery inthe hands of the insurgents, cleared away some barricades which had been placed to impede the action of the cavalry, and by their gallantry, gave the First State p of horse under Capt. ington, which fol- lowed elose in their rear, an opportunity to make a Ss charge upon the gun and capture it. ‘his conduct in a dark night, in the face of a piece of cannon, and when not a man was able to see the position, aivength, movements, and kind of enemy he had before him,was truly gallant and Jde- serving of all praise. The Markles, on the other hand.did nothing worthy of especial commenda- tion, while the bulk of the military seem to set down the conduct of their captain as anything but courageous. But, in reality, there seems tv be but the toss of a copper between the two captains; for what one lacks in courage, the other lacks in dis- cretion Fairlamb is as brave as he is headstrong, and would set his men an example of courage, while heedlessly placing them in difficulties inex- tricable. Saunders, on the contrary, would take care to keep his men out of danger, if possible, and thus dispense with the necessity of bravery; but should he be unsuccessful in this, nothing but a fearless lieutenant would prevent the commander's disease from affecting the legs of his men—they would, most certainly, break and run. Tue American Citizen Soupu There ere many incidents connected with the combat of the night of the 7th of July, which might form the ground-work of a tale, or at least of a short ae. On one occasion, Sergeant Wagner, of the Wash- ington Cavalry, of Holmsburg, was sent out of the company in search of a phy-ician to attend toa been ined iby a fall trom his horse, the Commander not knowing at the time that General Cadwallader had surgeons inside his lin ‘The trooper rode on hus errand till he got to Dr. Rutter’s doer, above harine street, one square north of the post of the military. Here he had scarcely dismounted to ring at the bell, before he was saluted by a discharge of firearms from some miscreants concealed in the alleys in that neighborhood. Not being hit on account of the darkness of the night rendering the aim of his assailants unsure, and nothing daunted, he continued ringing, bnt the doctor had either left his cwellag or would not answer the bell, and the soldier was compelled to depart.— He remounted his horse, and as he rode quiet- ly down the street, looking to the right and left, in search of some place that looked like a phy- sicians establishment, he received five volleys in succession, during which he played the greatest coolness and cemposure, not altering the pace of his herse in the le: but curbing him, and keeping tim in TES same jog trot, tillhe reach- ed the lines. Both horse and master ig, oe with a flesh wound each, anda few scratches. Theidea of a man running such a gauntlet, with a musket Popping at him every five or six ey with the ut- most deliberation, and not putting hie horse into a thing that has occurred in military life, and the true metal of the soldier. AmeRICAN Cnanacter.—In the course of the fight, spies would sometimes get near the ranks of the soldiers, by jumping over the adjoining fences, &c., representing themselves as peaceable citizens. They would by this means ascertain the position of ows u-} the soldiery, and in almost every instance after they had gone away, the line would be salnted by to|a shower of slugs from a canncn, varied by a running accompaniment of small arms. At one time a man suspected of being on this kind of errand, approached the limes cautiously. Capt. Mallory espied him in the gloom and seizing a musket levelled it. “Come here, you damned rascal, or I'll fix your head to the dvor post.” F 7 The stranger, startled by this salutation, would y | have run, but seeing the formidable weapon level- led full at his head, made a merit of necessity and came up to the Captain, “There, now, you damned scoundrel, you have assisted in firing at us,and itis but right you should take some of the fire too. So get down in the middle of the street by this gun; and mind, if you ce or, Attempt to run away, Tl blow you to the evil. ‘The stranger did as he was commanded. Pre- sently there came a blast from below, and the slugs fell like hail around, when he sprung to his feet with an exclamation. we “ By God, captain, I can’t stand this. If you won’t let me go, give me a musket, and let me re- turn the compliment. There ’ll be more satisfac- ape any ill HOLE ee ee ter some parlying, and abundance rea if he played false. a musket and the cartridges of a disabled ier was placed in his hands, and he stood his ground many for the rest of the night, answering the fire of the enemy with a hearty good will, and marching up town with the troops the next day. Naytor’s Stratement.—Charles Naylor has come out in the morning ae with a statement of the causes which led to the circumstances at- tending his arrest by General Cadwallader on the Saturday preceding the combat of Sunday night. It is, you will perceive, in opporition to all the tes- timony which has been given upon the subject, and is, from beginning to end, a false and garbled affair. There i# more in this matter than meets the eye. Observe how gingerly the military under General Cadwallader are treat- ed; how he himself is handled, and what particular pains are taken to place the Sheriff ina tavorable light before the community. It would be surprising though, it this were a movement on the se | part of the Sheriti’s friends to divert popular indig- nation from himiby offering up General Cadwalla- der asthe propitiatery sacrifice. 1’ll have aneye upon this movement, and if I find the Sheriff guil- ty of such cowardly treachery, he shall hear from me. Tux InvesticaTion.—Two witnesses were ex- amined to-day touching the first fire of the military on Sunday evening, the 7th instant, and they both testify te the provocation the military received, that they etood at least fifteen minutes receiving the assaults of the mob before ,they fired in self defence, and that the committee of citizens protecting the church had ample time to Ret two or three squares from thut spot before the ring took place. P General News.—The sky is clear, and the wea- ther cool and pleasant. This is the only news stir- Ting, and it certainly is something new this sum- mer. Miuitary Arrivat.—The Duquesne Greys, of Piusburg, Pa., arrived in town at 4 o’clock, and were escorted by the Philadelphia Greys. They made a martial appearance.
