The receipts from these roads have nothing to do with the State finances,as a is real estate or personal property is all the income the different States receive for the privileges granted. The canals of Ohio have made, solar, very large returns compared with Jast year, while those of how but a small increase, froma the main line of the public works of Pennsylvania up to July Ist, 1844, show an increase of $92 681,460 over the receipts up to thesame period in 1843. The total increase in the receipts of all the public works of the State, amounts to $131,547,51; consequently the main line must bethe most productive for the present, and the pros pect for a further increase very encouraging. This line of works is to be sold, provided the people at the next election confirm the proceedings of the last Leg islature on the subject. Purchasers can pay in State stock for whatever portion they may take. The intention isto form a company, under certain restrictions from the State, to take the works from the government, not under acer tain valuation, but at a price as much beyond as the com pany may choose to give. Whatever the amount the sale of the works may produce, it will reduce the public debt and do away with the necessity for extreme taxation. Philadelphia. hale (Correspondence of the New York Hani ie Phitaverruta; July 16, This morning, Judge Jones charged the, Grand Jury upon the subject of arming churches, engine houser, &., which he characterized as illegal, and subjecting any person engaged in the same to indictment for misdemeanor. He examined the article in the constitution, which says, “The right of citizens to bear arms, in defence of themeelves and the State, shal! not be questioned,” and applied it only to those citizens who have arms ia their dwelling houses for the protection of themselves and their families. The arming ot St. Philip’s de w Scenery, Cos- | Neri church was referred to, also the depositing of arms in several engine and hose houses, and the grand inquest was requested to examine into the facts, and present every individual engaged in the same. Judge Jones said nothing of the outrages of the Southwark mob, the Grand Juror, Wm. F. Spri er, who has been bound over for incituwg a riot, was suffered to remain on the panel, and, taking all these things into consideration, the charge is looked upon asa kind of judicial use for the mob outrages, and as most ilt timed and impolitic. The friends of good order are somewhat discon- certed at this apparent trackling, of high judicial officer to the wild, disorderly, intolerant and bi- goted spirit of Philadelpbia natveism, and they be- gin to think it useless to att mpt to eurb the demo- ralising sans culotteism of the day, when their eflorts | are neutralized by the grpotaved guardian of the laws. The Judge should have waited till this ex- citement was over—till the majesty of the jaw had been fully vindicated, and the rebellious and perse- cuting spirit now abroad is effectually extinguished j ~~ before he touched upon the factw by which the thoughtless attempt to justify the recent outrages. Troops hive arrived in the city from brigades inthe interior, to relleve those who have been on duty for the last week. I understand i: is Governor Portes’s orders, to relieve the different Brigades in succes- sion; to produce the moral effect in Philadelpbia, in the Union, and indeed all over the world, which arises from. the fact, that this government is ret enough in its citizen soldiery to crush any outbreal against the laws. He intends to show that xt the call of authority 60,000 armed and uniformed citi- zenscan be brought into prompt and effectual ac- tion. TheCourt of Quarter Sessions was engaged to- day in the trial of trifling cases. The inves! into the late riots hes been suspended forthe pre- sent. Other testimony is couting to light, and per- haps the examination will be resumed before euneet. Wm Sayre Heytham, this morning, filed an af- fidavit in open court, stating that the report of his testimony in the Philadelphia Sun,” was garbled, and different from he swore to, and that it comtain- ed rleven statements of facts as sworn to by him, which he never uttered. id An ar icle appeared in the “Spirit of the Times” a day or so since, stating that arms had been de- posited in the Rev. Mr. Chamber's church, in read street below Chestnut, The congregation have taken umbrage at this and prosecuted the edi- tor of the Timestor a libel, at the same time denying that there is any truth in the report. A hearing aH ie case came offto-day but nothing definite has, I un- derstand, been done in the matter The Rev. Mr. Chambers is a strong anti-Catholic preacher, was @ ze Jousand denunciatory temperance speaker, and his course is said to have been the means of break- ing the neck of the temperance reformation, and has contributed largely to the bitter and unreason- able sectarinism which is now, or has been recent- ly, so rampant in this community. The natives are trying to get rid of the conse- quence of the stand taken by them in the recent outbreak. During the disturbance they were the active parties; after itthey were loud and denunci- ator of the military, their leaders taking eve op- jonaiatt to set their conduct in the most odious ight, and absolutely burying the slain rioters with national honors; but now that the truth is out, and public opinion has assumed a wholesome tone, they whip rouud and claim to be exclusive friends of few and order—en- thusiastic admirers of the heroism of our citizen soldiery.
