Ina work recently published “The Lady in Black, a Story of New York Life, Morals and Manners,” her history ia developed, and a very remarkable and in structive one it is, and shows how much she was indebted to art for the witchery and charms she flang around her- self, Per example, in reply to a dashing fellow whe was wildly enamored with her, and who attempted to press her coral lips, she exclaims. “Come—stop that or you syoil all. Do you know that are a fool, Jack 1” I dare ray—but for what in particular 7” For loving me. I suppose you think me handsome. Never was a man more deceived. 1 am aperfect delusion. itis all puton. I made it 80, with the aid of the Poudre Subtile, procured from that eminent chemist to whom so many of our belles arein. debted for their beauty, the famous Dr. Felix Gouraud, and that, too, removed from my upper lip a moustach which would almost have rivalled your own. You are in raptures with my charming complexion, and delicate white neck and hands. Sunday, July 14—6 P. M. Stocks during the past week have been very regular cowpared with previous weeks, but still the market is very much depressed and prices very unsettled. In con- nequence of the absence of many members of both Boards of stocks, the operations ore very limited. Notwith- standing he great abundance and low price of money, many stocks in the list gi below, command very low prices compared with those current during the late pe- riods of speculation. We can look for a revival in the stock market simultaneously with the commencement of the full trade, and not before, It matters little how plenty muneyis, prices for fancy stocks eannotydvance unless an excitement rages and specul. runs high. Another pre- yentive to an immediate improvement in prices, iaithe abure dance of stock of all descriptions in the market. There fre more shares in the market than operators wish. An advance in any particular stock is sure to bring out large lots for sale, until the supply breaks down the market and Prices fall to alow paint. The state of Foreign exchanges and the possibility that specie may go forward, has a very unfavorable inflaence on the stock market. Pennsylva nia State stock is undoubtedly injuriously effected by the al troubles of the State, prices for the week were somewhat lower than daring the week, particulorly those for fancies.— The bank. of this city and State, have concluded not te change tl icipation of the quarterly he emount vow out will be but stightly reduced but the reluras will not show the extent of loans o1 r discount re une ORK Mrnuete. ‘ri. This difficulty is ina great measure removed, avd the trade of this city consequently more equally distributed, through the pri- vilege recently granted to the railroads of this Stateto carry freight during the suspension of navigation on the canals of the State. This will also havea very favorable effect on credits, reducing the time and enabling the country merchant to regulate his stock more by the de mand, In times past the merchant of Western New York, or of Ohio, was compelled to run great risks in purcha. sing goods, fearing they might get frozen up in the ca nal, before reaching their destination. They were also compelled to purchase supplies, to last from October to May vr June, on acredit of from eight to twelve months. The railroads now ensure a comerunication with the in, terior the year round, although at present the railroad route between this city and Buffalo is rather circuitous, yet it ia open throughout the year. The benefits—modes of transporting merchandize from the seaboard to te in- terior through the winter months—extended to all classes are very great. The price of food is greatly reduced, as supplies come in continually. Flour, beef, pork, &c. will hereafter be just as cheap in the winter as in the summer, and speculators will be deprived of the advanteges of a monopoly. We annex the quotations for the principal ar- ticles of food in this market. Quorarions 1x tux New York Marker. “eb, 14. The supplies now coming forward so abundantly, the immense receipts of which cause the present low prices, were accumulating through the winter at the numerous ports in the western country, waiting the opening of navigation to find a market. Had their been conveyances to market through the winter, prices would have been just as low last February as they were on the 13th inst. We speak in this instance of the great advantages an open communication with the, West extends tothe consumers. The producers receive benefit by the same arrangement, to nearly as great an extent, The advance in prices through the winter months has heretofore benefitted the speculator and monopolist. The farmers very seldom receive any benefit from high prices. The millers in the wheat growing'sections of the country generally arrange matters so that prices are kept down unti! they get hold of nearly all afloat. The producers and consumers are, therefore, nearly equally benefitted by open markets. The Bostonians will be favored equally with this city, by the opening of the railroads for freight through this State. Their western road will keep open the communicat‘on with the west throughout the year, and the eastern markets constantly supplied with the products of the west, Tothe farmers of this State, this arrangement must be particularly profitable. The receipts of the public works of Peunsylvania since the opening of navigation to the lst inst. this year, com- pared with the same period in 1943, show quite an im- provement. The total receipts from the public works of Pennsylvania for 1844, may show quite an in- crease on last years ; but the adJitional amount paid into the treasury, will be but adrop ih the bucket, compared to the immense liabilities of that department. ‘The public works of Pennsylvania,‘as well as those of other States, must, with the increased movement in agricultusal pro ducts, be more productive this year then last, but not to fa extent suificient to improve the financial condition of the commonwealth. [Correspondence of the New Yori Herald } Prwaveresia, July 14, 1844. examination before Judge Jones, of the ud Terminer, touching the recent riots io Southwark, we oncluded last night, and the mase of testimony taken goes to show that the police or magistracy of the District culpably neglected their duty, sided virtually with the mob and ren- dered the:n insulcnt and outrageous, that the mili- tary were under the necessity to fire in order to defend themselves and avoid being driven off the ground ; that none but the most violent and riot- ouswere killed by the first fire ; and that the offi- cers aud men from the beginning to the end be- haved with the utmost forbearance and intrepidity. The conduct of the Aldermen and people of Southwark was indeed most intamous. After the military had taken prisoners those who were en- gaged in tLe murderous assault, the Aldermen dis- charged them without bail to renew their outrages, and this emboldened the rebels by leading them to believe, what was indeed the fact, that the magis- tracy was with them. One Alderman is idenified as doing acts that ought to consign him to a peni- tentiary for life. He was besides, busy in circula- ting false rumors, &c , which incensed the people to such an extent against the military that they re- fused the morning after the fight to relieve the fe mished and worn out men even with acup of water. The Sun of yesterday contains a ft an garbled account of the testimony which | charge ou to put ne confidence in whatever. These ellows, who, by their intolerance and bigotry have produced all the mischief, are making a desperate effort to forestall public opinion in fee to escape the odium their conduct merits. A number of persons were arrested charged with being in some way connected with the riots.— Ethan Harwood was traced to the cannon of the insurgents and is in prison, Wash Conard struck Capt. Hill with a brick previous to the first fire and isindito Win, F. Springer, a member of the present Grand Jury, is under 32,000 hail for inciting to riot. Lem. Paynter, jr, Johu Foster, Andrew McClean, and one or two others, are off. Fatse ALarM.—Au alarm was given about nine o'clock last night, thut a crowd had collected at Moyameusiag Prison to rescue the prisoners. The 2ad Brigady, Gen. Roumfort, from the upper part of the county, and the Brigade which formed the principal force on ihe Sunday night of terror, were under arms and reported at Head Quarters, in helf an hour after they had been summoned. This al- acrity is the result of the admirable discipline pre. served by Col. Goodman, and his Adjutant, jor Small. ‘The alarm turned out tobe unfounded, and the troops returned to quarters. Three Brigades from the interior are expected this afternoon to relieve those now on duty. Surcipge —A man named Elijah Sharpe commit- ted suicide yesterday morning, in an alley running from Front to Second streets, between Arch and Race streets, by cutting his throat and stabbing himsell. He lingered ull the afternoon. An in- quest has been held over the body. Panape —The Ist division paraded yesterday afternoon in Independence square.
