to print the one or write the other, and we again say that the latter cannot be done in the case‘of this system, by Isaac Pittman himeelf, with sufficient despatch to render it available for the only purpose in the world for which the art is worth learning. It would be easv to show any person in the least degree conversant with stenographic characters, and the principles which govern their application, that if ever it was true in any case, it is in abre- viated writing—that simplicity fis the leading ele- ment of perfection; and that the leading and in- dispensable requisite for an artist who would ex- cel, is not the use of a long, or diffuse system, so minute in detail to meet every case, and render every anomaly in our orthography tangible to our sense of seeing, through the medium of aset ofarbi- trary characters—but they are of 4 concise, clear, and simple one, easily practised, and which, by the aid of a well disciplined memory and persevering industry, will be clear enough for him alone who will go to the personal cost of their exertions to at- tain it. In the meantime, we will only observe that this phonography is just about 9s great a farce as mneu- motechny, and its professor, Pittman, in effrontery, quackery, and humbug, not a whit behind the no- torious Gouraud, Greeley & Co., Arcades Ambo. Crvgtty ro AnimaLs.— Amongst the numerous causes of complaint that exist in the conduct and mode of cenducting their business by the cab, hack, and omnibus drivers, there is none, that me- rits more] severe reprehension than the {shameless disregard} for the ‘comforts of the poor ‘dumb ani- mals, that earn for these heartless jarvies their living. It is more than a man of properly regu- lated feelings can look at passively—more than any well regulated society should tolerate to see horses jogging’ under the unsparing lash of the wihipper-in from morning till night, overladen, and probably under fed, and actually disabled by oppression, cruelty, and neglect. More than two or three cases came under our notice yesterday of this sort. In one, the poor brute had but three legs available for service; in another, the breast was excoriated and @o lacerated by the constant friction of the harness us to be one mass of raw flesh. Now, this is too bad. The horse—the beau- tiful, the noble, the docile horse, should not re- ceive treatment far 100 had for the untameable Hyena; and least of all, should this prevail in en- lightened America. ‘We think there are laws applicable to these cases of cruelty to animals, and we invite the earnest attention of our ‘municipal authorities to enforce them; and we suggest that those who continue to offend be sent to learn from the Bedouin Arabs what they have failed to acquire in the midst of civilization. Charleston. [Correspondence of the Herald ] Cuartesron, July Ist, 1844. Changes in the City, and its Civili Murder of Lyons again—Mesmerism and Hum- bug, $e. Six—Our city has heretofore been proverbial fer its languid and unvarying monotony, rather than for any great variety of incident; of late it has, however, undergohe a most remarkable change in that particular, insomuch that were one of its in- habitants for the last five years, to,compare 1t now with what it was, he would be somewhat startled by the contrast, if he did not actually entertain a momentary doubt ot its identity. The great fire of 1838, which left so large a waste where now ha- bitations spring up as by enchantment, has not more changediis outward form, than recent occur- rences have the moral character ot its population. But yesterday, and it was a place where every thing around suggested only images of quiet and repose ; now assassinations, suicides, robberies, brawls, ani even elopements, are familiar things, with which the public sppetite is daily fed, even to satiety. From amid scenes so fertile in incidents, an occa- sional communication, should the present writer be deemed one whose lucubrations are worthy of a place in your journal, may possibly interest its readers, perhaps even subserve some better and more useful purpose. The excitement consequent on the murder of Lyons has partially subsided, and with it the suspi- cion only ridiculous, if it had notybeen propagated 80 extensively as to become cruel and unjust, that his friends were the perpetrators of that atrocity. This suspicion it is believed, originated in_indivi- dual malice, and gained strength because ofthe ab- sence of any one on whom the publie mind, in its excited condition, could, with any thing like an ap- eee to plausibility, fasten the accusation. nilst on this subject, permit me to mention for the Cel pilen inane of the world at large, but more espe- cially that portion of it which conaposes the medi- cx faculty and the police, a new thecry in the art of discovering crimes, which, perhaps, those of our city may turn to better account tuan the learnedThebans who have for the first time origina- ted it here. Should it ever become of practical ap- epee it will form a new epoch in the history of pa uman discovery. The name of its inventors will live in the pantheon of history when that of Gali- leo is forgotten. ‘ Sak It is said that several wise men, disciples of the school of Mesmerism, undertook to apply this new whim whamin a manner worthy of an age ot witch- craft. A female was selected and put under the mesmeric sleep with a view that she should tehold and proclaim to the world the murderer of Lyoni Ancient tradition furnishes nothing of the incanta- tions of the Thessalian wizard which equals the Rortentons revelations made on this occasion. ith astounding accuracy she pointed to the true author of the deed—described him minutely even to his very beard and breeches. (She must have heen something of a cote pei Not satis- fied even with this, she beheld a den where he was to be found, surrounded by the blood-stained spoil torn from the victim. _ The officers of jusice were immediately in requisition—already the felon was in imagination within their grusp—visions of rewards floated betore their minds. They repaired to the spot big with hopes of discovery. There must have been some error in the experiment—no trace of the murderer or the spoils was found! _ In the meantime, men of sober reflection and dis- passionate judgment are at a lossto which of the actors in this most striking and interesting drama, toaccord the lottiest tribute of admiration—the he- roes or the heroine—those who dared to palm on the credulity of society an imposture so infamous and insulting, or she who submitted to be the pas- sive instrument in its accomplishment—the learned quacks who played the part of scientific blunderers, or the wierd sister who became a lying prophetess t Apams & Co.—This well known express line is going ahead of every body in enterprise. Its business with Boston, Philadelphia, and “all along shore,” is rapidly increasin; Mr. Eprror:—The reason why New Yorkers pay & disproportion of the taxes is, that insome of the other counties of this State, the assessors tax the people thus:—They estimate ihe land at the fair value, and pay tax on only one third of such value, while in this city we sometimes have our estate valued at more than it sells for at auction, and pay onitefull value. Gardner, arrived at this port yesterday from Belize, Honduras, with $12,600 in specie, and the America, from Cha; with $2,500, Since the Ist instant the money market has been unu- sually easy. The payment of large dividends on State, Bank, Insurance and other stocks, has thrown into the market la jums of money, which are seeking inveat- ment in some of the floating stocks in the street. The money market is liberally snpplied with capital from sources independent of the.banks. Individual capitalists supply stock operators plentifully with the means to car- ry on their speculations, at rates below those demanded by the banks. The contest in making louns has ali through the season been between the banks and private capitalists, and so far individuals have succeeded better than corporations. The deposites in our banks are enor- mous, showing that large sums of money are yet unem- ployed. The movements of the private bankers in this market during the past year; the success they have met with in their operations, and the benefits they have con- ferred on the commercial classes, have established the fact, that one half of the many banks now in existence in this city and State are worse than useless. They are com pelled to resort to every expedient to sustain themselves egainst the growing strength of the many private bank- ers annually springing up in all our large cities. The power of the local banks has departed from them—it has been usurped bythose who know how to use it more judi- ciously. We consider the establishment of private banking houses in this country one of the most important finuncial movements made since the destruction of the old United States Bank. In regulating the price of monoy, the rates of domestic exchanges, the state of the money market, and the system of credits; they in a mensure prevent those dreadful revulsions in the money market, we have heretofore so often experienced. It is gratifying to see capi- tal accumulating in the Lands of those who devote it to the extention of trade and commerce, the equaliza- tron of our internal exchanges, and the dissolution of ail bank monopoly. The Supreme Court of Massachusetts, in the case of the Nahant Bank, has decided that stockholders, holaing stock ‘as trustees, were liable to the some extent as other stock- holders, for the debts of the bank ; but that executors and adminisirators, holding stock’as such, were only liable to the extent of the assets which came into their hands frem @ estates which they represented. - Waa i, tH do P Harmony's Nephews & come do 64 bbls do 3 casks BY THE SOUTHERN MAIL. jure —————_—___— Soo ing June 8th, Domestic Importations.
