The Eastern Manufactories are in avery flourishing condition, The Merrimac .Company of Lowell have a capital of $2,000,000, and in thirteen months divided $400, 000 in dividends, equal to about 20 per cent, besides reserv- ing for depreciation of mills, machinery, &c., $110,000.— Its reservations in 1343 amounted to $231,000, and in May 1844, to $315,000. Several other companies in that seciion of the country can exhibit an equally favorable condition, Manufacturing stocks still command high prices in Bes, ton ; railroad stocks are also great favorites. Lowell is worth 30} advarce, dividend of 4 per cent on; Maine 74 advance ; Concord 97 ; Providence 8 do.; Auburn ond Rochester 8}. . The Exchange Company of Boston have declared adi’ vidend of 2} per cent on the par value of the shares—$500 —and anticipate annual dividends of five per cent, until its floating debt be paid, when it will bea six per cent stock, The new clip of wool raised in this country is coming to market very rapidly. Within a very short time prices have improved, but compared with quotations for 1840 and 1849, there is but a very trifling variation, but the farmers are receiving more remunerating returns for their clips than formerly. Within afew years the raising of woolin this country has increased to a wonderful ex tent. The farmers of the West have turned th atten- tion more fo the production of this materi], in con! quence of the low price all other agricultural products command. The Western country is peculiarly adaptea to the raising of wool, and must soon monopolise the business. It can be produced at one-third the expense of production in the Eastern States. The mild climate of the West, compared with the East, enables the producers of that section to raise better qualities of wool, heavier fleeces, and at avery trifling expense. The long and severe winters of this section of the country compels the farmers to feed their flocks a long time on dry food, con- sequently the texture of the staple is reduced by the fall- ing off in the condition of the creature. We annex a table showing the quantity produced in each State, ac- cording to the returns made in 184¢7—= Propuction Gs Wh IN THE Unitep States. 01 New Jerey Pennsyivania+ Delaware table, amounted to 35,892,114 pounds. Ohio was, at that time, the third wool-growing State in the Union—we have no doubt at this moment it is the second, and in ten years will be the first. Indians, Mlinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri are rapidly progressing in this businees. It is a very astonishing fact that those farmers throughout the country who have adhered to the production ot this material, have invariably, year after year, notwithstand- ing the fluctuations in prices that have taken place, mado it the most profitable of all agricultural operations. We annex the quotations for the Boston market fora series of years, adopting that point as the truest standard for prices :— Quotations For Woot ix tHe Boston Manxer. In March, 184, the Compromise Act had a little more than two years to run, and the rate of duty on foreign importations was greatly reduced. In April, 1842, the Compromise Act was just expiring, when the average duty on foreign manufactures was at the lowest point, and we find the quotations fer wool at this time nearly corresponding with those of March, 1840. In June, 1844, under the operations of the tariff of Septem- ber, 1842, we find our quotations very similar to those of March, 1840, and April, 1842. In September, 1843, prices were much lower than before or since. If the tarift regu- lates the price for most of our agricultural productions, we should like to know what was the cause— according to the theory of protectionists—of high prices in 1840 and 1842, when the acale of duties was very much reduced ? The manufacturers are much more active now than they were in 1840, 1842 or 1843, and there must be a more active demand for the raw material. ‘The importation of foreign wool has fallen off’ very much since the adoption of the new tariff. . Quantity Axp Vauur or Woot iron Unirap Statxe pon Four ea Not exceeding be 9, INTO THE 1840, pounds; The falling off from 1842 to 1843 in the importation of wool under eight cents per pound, was about six million pounds in quantity, but in valae only two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars The impertation of wool over eight cents per pound, fell off in the same time five hundred and seveaty-three thousand pounds. Granting that the new tariff has produced this decrease in the im- ports of foreign wool, we cannot show that it has advan- ved the value of wool of domestic growth a farthing, but on the contrary, will in a few years cause a reduction. Whatever tends to increase the production of any article, eventually causes a decline in prices, by creating a sur- plus from our productions. If the Tarift protects manu- factures, it raises a competition, and thereby reduces the price of manufactured articles. If foreign markets are open for our egricultural products, the demand increases the production and reduces prices. With our great extent of soil there are no limits to its products, and after supply- ing the wholeworld,we could keep a surplus for ourselves, Why is it that the agricultural products of this country sell at so reduced prices? Is it because other nations shut them out from their markets? or because we raise more than we cen consume? Weare inclined to think the latter cause the true one. Should Great Britain open her ports free for our agricultural products, it would not advance prices for more than a year ortwo. The aadi- tional supply required could soon be furnished ; the tem- porary inducement for production weuld prompt many to go into the business, and two or three years would give us the same or a larger surplus than we now have. It will, in a very chort period, be the same with wool as it is with cotton, ‘he production will exceed the consumption. Recesrs or Woon at Troe Waren, 1842 ann 1843. 1842, 1842. Increase.
