For a few months past he has been using Dr. McNair’s Acoustic Oil—in all two bottles—which he purchased of Messrs. mstock & Co, No, 21 Courtlandt street, and his hearing is now restored almost perfectly, and the humming and sounds in his ears have entirely ceased, He took another bottle for his wife to use, who is afflicted very much in the same way. M. ‘The stock market during the past week has been in a very unsettled tate. Quotations have been gradually sinking, notwithstanding the abundance of money and the eftorts of speculators. All confidence in the ability of ope- rators to pay up differences on time contracts, is destroyed, and the operations are principally for cash, and comse- quently very limited. The time is rapidly approaching for the banks to draw in their loans, which, with the unsettled state of the market, and the difficulties many operators labor under, form the late immense declines. ‘The for- tunes that have been nominally made during the past few months have vanished, and those who were calculating upon their thousands, find themselves greatly mistaken, on footing up their accounts. We annex the daily quo- tations for the past week. fia me ae a 2 a SB 1 Bs Be 10434 104% 10834 leaf “ — We 9 8 8M K 22% % Im ae « These quotations show a much greater regularity than those for many previous weeks, the heaviest falling off for the weeks just closed, only reaches about six per cent, ‘This is a very moderate decline in a time of great apecu lation, Several of the stocks that have for sainetime past been considered fancies, are rapidly becoming good secu rities. We particularly allude to the Norwich ang Worcester Rail Road. This stock must very soon take @ very prominent place among dividend paying secu. rities, The resources of the cempany'are daily imprev. ing, while the outlays and current expenses have been Greatly reduced. The sume rate of increase in receipts for another year, that the road has realized for the past, must enable the company to declare a very fair dividend. The directors could have made a small dividend on the lot inst , but their good judgments induced them to forego so doing until another report was presented to the stock holders. The Long Island Rail Road is rapidly progress” ing to completion, a very large force is constantly em. ployed on all the unfinished portions, and it is stated that atrain of cars will run from Brooklyn to Greenport on the 4th of July. The principal point of connection on this side of the Sound, will be at Norwich, which will tend to increase the revenue of the road running east from that place very much. This will undoubtedly be the most direct and expeditious route between Boston and New York, as it is intended to accomplish the distance re | between the two cities in about nine hours, making & morning line, dining on board the ferry boat while crossing the Sound, aud arriving at each city at early tea time. It cannot be long after these two rail road lines go into active operation, with these connections, before they will be able to make good dividends, and take their stand among other productive works. Great exertions are being made to ferce the breath of life into several companies, whose affairs have been for a long time wrapt in the most profound oblivion. The Canton company has experienced a very severe galvanic shock, and symptoms of life have again become visible. ‘The late report of this company, however, does not show a very favorable view of its affairs. It seems that the ag- gregate receipts of this company for the year ending the 1st inst., amounted to $50,088,25, one half of which was appropriated to the payinent of the dividend of one dollar per share, declared on the 1th of May, and paid on the 6th of June—and the payment of debts. The balance of the receipts were appropriated to making imprevements on the property, viz: to the payment of the taxes, sala- ries, &. Ist, this year, will fall as far short those of last, as they are at the present time. ‘The immense quantity of spurious coin in circulation, represented to be both gold and silver, has induced the di- vectors of the different mints throughout the country to give publicity to the descriptions of the spurious coin afloat. ‘he annexed letter is from the coiner of the mint, at Dahlonega, N. C. To the Editor of the Dahlonega Time Sin—Permit me, through the columns of your paper, to caution the public agamst counterfeit quarter eagles, A counterfeit quarter eagle was brought to the mint to- day, in order to compare it with the genuine coin, and test its weight and the quality of the metal. ‘This piece purported to be struck at the mint in this place in 1843 ; the date was evidently made twice on the die ; the first, being too much to the right, was defaced, and the second punched in on the erasure, which gave an indistinctness to the Spuxes he impression on both sides had the appearance of being rounded, as though the dies had been made by casting or by some other process from acorrect coin ; the beaded and blank borders were equal tothe coin struck at the mint; the milling on the edge pa defective ‘and appeared as though the lines were near- up. iach quarter eagle issued from the mint contains sixty- four and a half grains, but this piece was found to weigh only forty and a half grains—on cutting the edge with a knite and applying acid, it was shown to be composed of brass, (composition of zinc and copper,) and gilt either by the electro-galvanic process, or by the ordinary modes of guilding, as the acid would not effect any part but where the surface was removed. The appearance as to color was tolerably good, sufficiently so to pass readily along with genuine coin that are a little worn. Persons dealing in gold coin would do well to pay tention tothe weight, as there is but little danger of re- ceiving counterfeits where this point is attended to. D. H. The sales of the forfeited stock amounted to $31,545,00, which enabled the company to make the dividend above alluded to, This resource has now failed) the forfeited stock has all been forced into the market, and the receipts of the company hereafter must be exclusively confined to the productiveness of the property. Much progress has been made during the past year in adjusting claims long outstanding and unsettled, and in reducing the expenses of the company to avery low level. The dividend of one dollar per share declared and paid, is gene" rally considered very poor policy on the part of the direc- tion. ‘The oftairs of the company cannot permit a repeti- tion of this move, and a failure will act greatly to the disadvantage of the concern. Since this dividend was made and paid, the stock has fallen in this market nearly one hundred per cent, and we doubt the ability of opera- tors to create an advance from present quotations.
